Species Profile and Associated Indigenous Knowledge of Trees and Shrubs Used As Tea in Benguet
January-June 2015 SPECIES PROFILE AND ASSOCIATED INDIGENOUS KNOWLEDGE OF TREES AND SHRUBS USED AS TEA IN BENGUET John G. Tacloy College of Forestry, Benguet State University ABSTRACT To conserve indigenous shrubs and trees used as tea for environmental and socio-economic development, profiling of these species was conducted. The research focused in identifying and in obtaining initial information as to the nature of the habitat, flowering/fruiting periods, and respondents’ indigenous knowledge of the shrubs and trees used as tea. Data were gathered through interviews with community folks using structured questionnaire, augmented by field observations. There were 79 respondents who contributed information; almost all are farmers and the great majority are elders and women. Eighteen indigenous trees/shrubs were identified by the respondents being used as tea. The most popular being known to more than one third of the respondents is ‘Beltik’ (Syzygium sub-caudatum), followed by ‘Dael’ (Cipadessa baccifera), and ‘Amututin’ (Drimys/Tasmannia piperata). Among these species, only ‘Beltik’, ‘Talugtug’ (Gaultheria leucocarpa), and ‘Tsa-ang gubat’ (Carmona retusa) are used as tea; the rest are chiefly used as medicinal plants but being prepared as tea. Mostly used are the leaves, followed by the bark, rarely both the leaves and the bark or the fruits/ seeds. These parts are used fresh, air-dried, or sun-dried, and prepared mainly by boiling. All species were reported to provide health benefits. As cited by the respondents, propagation of the species is mainly through the use of wildlings, seeds, cuttings, and flowering/fruiting usually varies with locations. The species are found in mossy forest, except ‘Bangkoro’ (Morinda citrifolia L.), ‘Dita’ (Alstonia scholaris), ‘Tuai’ (Bischofia javanica), ‘Narra’ (Pterocarpus indicus) and ‘Tsa-ang gubat’ which are found in lower elevations. -

Maintenance and conservation of Dipterocarp diversity in tropical forests _______________________________________________ Mohammad Nazrin B Abdul Malik A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Faculty of Science Department of Animal and Plant Sciences November 2019 1 i Thesis abstract Many theories and hypotheses have been developed to explain the maintenance of diversity in plant communities, particularly in hyperdiverse tropical forests. Maintenance of the composition and diversity of tropical forests is vital, especially species of high commercial value. I focus on the high value dipterocarp timber species of Malaysia and Borneo as these have been extensive logged owing to increased demands from global timber trade. In this thesis, I explore the drivers of diversity of this group, as well as the determinants of global abundance, conservation and timber value. The most widely supported hypothesis for explaining tropical diversity is the Janzen Connell hypothesis. I experimentally tested the key elements of this, namely density and distance dependence, in two dipterocarp species. The results showed that different species exhibited different density and distance dependence effects. To further test the strength of this hypothesis, I conducted a meta-analysis combining multiple studies across tropical and temperate study sites, and with many species tested. It revealed significant support for the Janzen- Connell predictions in terms of distance and density dependence. Using a phylogenetic comparative approach, I highlight how environmental adaptation affects dipterocarp distribution, and the relationships of plant traits with ecological factors and conservation status. This analysis showed that environmental and ecological factors are related to plant traits and highlights the need for dipterocarp conservation priorities. -

Wallace Endowed Plant Propagation Intern Date: January 2020 Abstract: In this gap analysis of the Morris Arboretum’s Hydrangea collection, I will assess the hydrangea collection with a focus on the “fuzzy leaf” varieties that fall under two classifications: Section Asperae and Section Chinenses. Within these fuzzy leaf groupings, this project will include an analysis of the collection at the species and cultivar level and will outline which hydrangeas are missing from or underrepresented in our collection, as well as recommendations for suitable additions. These recommendations favor wild collected species and species available from the collections at regional arboreta. Discussion of the controversy over nomenclature verification methods, phylogenic treatments, and theories of biological classification systems are explored in the body of this paper. This project also entails seed propagation of target species growing at the Arboretum, and cutting propagation of desired species from local institutions to diversify this growing collection. -

In the study, a total of 113 plant species were recorded belonged to 100 genera distributed among 54 families, in which 2 families are vascular cryptogams (Pteridophyta) and 1 family was non – vascular cryptogams (Bryophyta) and all other families are Angiosperms. Fabaceae (10 species) is a dominant family followed by Rubiaceae (8 species), Euphorbiaceae (6 species) and 4 species each from Malvaceae and Poaceae. The diversity indices namely Shannon – Weiner index, Simpson index, evenness index, etc., were analysed. Among the total species, two species were in vulnerable condition in regard to red data book. Institute of Biological Sciences, University of the Philippines Los Baños ABSTRACT The leaf architecture of Malvaceae sensu APG was examined and characterized to determine if it can be used in classification of the family and the identification of its species. Forty species were observed, measured and described. A dichotomous key was constructed based solely on leaf architecture characters. The dichotomous key indicated that leaf architecture characters can be used in distinguishing some species of Malvaceae sensu APG. Some basic leaf architectural characters can also be used in describing certain clades within the family. It is recommended that specimens are collected personally instead on relying on available specimens in the herbarium. Preparation of leaf skeletons through clearing method can also be done in future studies. Increase of sample size is also recommended. KEYWORDS: leaf architecture, APG, classification INTRODUCTION Malvaceae Jussieu, nom. cons is a newly circumscribed family of the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group (APG, 2003). This family now comprises 243 genera and 4225 species which are mainly tropical in distribution. In the APG system, member families of Malvales like Sterculiaceae, Bombacaceae, Tiliaceae and Malvaceae sensu strictu were merged to become Malvaceae sensu APG (or lato). This lumping of families became controversial and gained criticism from some taxonomists. Cheek (2006, see also Cheek in Heywood et. al., 2007, Stevens, 2010) opts for a full dismemberment of the super family into ten separate families (Bombacaceae, Malvaceae, Sterculiaceae, Tiliaceae, Durionaceae, Brownlowiaceae Byttneriaceae, Helicteraceae, Pentapetaceae, and Sparrmanniaceae). -
