One of the positions is that of Bernard Reginster, which is as follows: in Nietzsche’s early work The Birth of Tragedy, falsification is a central characteristic of art. The affirmation of life based on such art, in The Birth of Tragedy, is predicated on falsification. Nietzsche subsequently moves away from life-affirmation based on falsification, to the idea that there must be affirmation of life as it is. This thesis seeks to show, contra Reginster, that falsification is involved in the relationship between life- affirmation and art throughout Nietzsche’s writings. This thesis counters Reginster’s narrative by moving through Nietzsche’s writings to show that falsification, in one form or another, has an ongoing presence in his writing on life- affirmation and art. The thesis begins with the illusory art upon which life-affirmation is based in The Birth of Tragedy. It then moves to The Gay Science, and the forms of falsification woven into the relationship between life-affirmation and art therein. The thesis subsequently turns to Nietzsche’s writings after The Gay Science. It looks at both Nietzsche’s published and unpublished writing on the relationship between life-affirmation and art. In so doing, the thesis seeks to show that the relationship involves falsification even at the very last in Nietzsche’s writing. There is then exploration of the various statuses Nietzsche assigns to truth: this casts doubt on the safe and steady status Reginster claims for truth in Nietzsche’s late work. The conclusion of this thesis is that falsification is involved in the relationship between life- affirmation and art throughout Nietzsche’s writing. This is not to deny that there are, as Reginster suggests, instances of the relationship devoid of falsification in Nietzsche’s late writings. Art, for Nietzsche, is a significant force in generating affirmation of life. The relationship between life-affirmation and art in Nietzsche’s writing is much discussed in the secondary literature on Nietzsche. Nietzsche subsequently moves away from life-affirmation based on falsification, to the idea that there must be affirmation of life as it is. 1 In this thesis, I agree with the claims about Nietzsche’s early work – I dispute, however, the claim that Nietzsche subsequently moves away from life-affirmation based on falsification. This thesis seeks to show, contra Reginster, that falsification is involved in the relationship between life-affirmation and art throughout Nietzsche’s writings. This is not to deny instances of the relationship devoid of falsification in Nietzsche’s later writing. It is important, however, to make the counter-argument to Reginster’s narrative as it corrects the understanding of an important element in Nietzsche’s thought. Before elaborating on Reginster’s narrative and the counter-argument of this thesis, there will be a survey of other positions on the relationship between art and life in Nietzsche’s writing. This will give some sense of the wider context. This thesis argues a continuity, namely in the involvement of falsification in the relationship between life-affirmation and art throughout Nietzsche’s writings. The survey will therefore look at suggestions, in the secondary literature, of continuity or discontinuity through Nietzsche’s writings. Discontinuities suggested in the secondary literature In the secondary literature on Nietzsche, there are suggestions of discontinuity between Nietzsche’s early and later writings in terms of the relationship between life and art. One such suggestion pertains to Nietzsche’s stance towards Richard Wagner. Ridley comments that in the The Birth of Tragedy, Nietzsche concentrated his hopes for the regeneration of 1 Maudemarie Clark, in her seminal work Nietzsche on Truth and Philosophy (1990), also thinks that Nietzsche moves away from falsification after his early work. 7 contemporary culture in Wagner, whereas the ‘later Nietzsche no longer pinned hopes of any sort to Wagner, let alone such grandiose ones.’ (Ridley 2007: 12) 2 This suggestion seems reasonable, and does not deny that Wagner influenced Nietzsche for the rest of the latter’s life. 3 Another suggestion of discontinuity, in the Nietzschean secondary literature, relates to the metaphysics in The Birth of Tragedy. In the book, Nietzsche describes a primal artist of the world which creates the world as art.

    Antichrist Psychonaut: Nietzsche and Psychedelics – Peter Sjöstedt-H – ‘… And close your eyes with holy dread, For he on honey-dew hath fed, And drunk the milk of Paradise.’ So ends the famous fragment of Kubla Khan by the Romantic poet, Samuel Taylor Coleridge. He tells us that the poem was an immediate transcription of an opium-induced dream he experienced in 1797. As is known, the Romantic poets and their kin were inspired by the use of psychoactive substances such as opium, the old world’s common pain reliever. Pain elimination is its negative advantage, but its positive attribute lies in the psychedelic (‘mind- revealing’)1 state it can engender – a state described no better than by the original English opium eater himself, Thomas De Quincey: O just and righteous opium! … thou bildest upon the bosom of darkness, out of the fantastic imagery of the brain, cities and temples, beyond the art of Phidias and Praxiteles – beyond the splendours of Babylon and Hekatómpylos; and, “from the anarchy of dreaming sleep,” callest into sunny light the faces of long-buried beauties … thou hast the keys of Paradise, O just, subtle, and mighty opium!2 Two decades following the publication of these words the First Opium War commences (1839) in which China is martially punished for trying to hinder the British trade of opium to the Chinese people. Though opium, derived from the innocent garden poppy Papavar somniferum, may cradle the keys to Paradise it also clutches the keys to Perdition: its addictive thus potentially ruinous nature is commonly known. Today, partly for these reasons, opiates are mostly illegal without license – stringently so in their most potent forms of morphine and heroin.

And, to be sure, the first edition of The Gay Science began with a teasing series of light, joking rhymes.1 Taking this teasing further, the 1887 title page replaces the 1882 epigraph from Emerson with a gently unserious rhyme, adding a fifth book and finishing it off with an additional cycle of songs – Songs of Prince Vogelfrei2 – invoking at once the knightly as well as the chastely3 erotic character of the troubadour (and recurring in the arch allusions of Nietzsche’s Ecce Homo).

This essay looks at the notion of eternal recurrence, which Nietzsche also happens to introduce at the end of Book Four of The Gay Science, and this notion connects The Gay Science and Thus Spoke Zarathustra, two books, both of which were designedly, so I shall argue, initially published in unfinished versions. Indeed and because Thus Spoke Zarathustra was published in several unfinished versions the scholars’ habit of citing the books of Zarathustra corresponds not to individual ‘parts’ but separate books, published seriatim. But none of these is as fundamental as the struggle between the ancients and the moderns. With the writings of Descartes, and perhaps even earlier with those of Machiavelli, there was a transition from “man in the world” to “man above the world.” Plato’s dialogues, Aristotle’s lecture notes, and the verses of the pre- Socratics are abandoned for having the wrong focus. No longer did philosophers seek to observe and question nature and man’s place in it; now the goal was mastery and possession of nature.

Nathan Oaklander The University 0/Michigan-Flint In attempting to understand the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche one is immediately faced with the task of resolving the prima /acie inconsistencies in his views on freedom. On the one hand, Nietzsche claims that we do not have freedom of will and that, consequently, we are not accountable for our actions. The following passage is representative of many: The history of the moral sensations is the history ofan error, the error of accountability, which rests on the error offreedom ofwill. ( ) No one is accountable for his deed, no one for his nature; tojudge is the same thing as to be unjust. This applies when the individual judges hirnself. The proposition is as clear as daylight, and yet here everyone prefers to retreat back into the shadows and untruth: from fear of the consequences.! On the other hand, Nietzsche emphasizes that the significance of the death of God is that it frees us into an open sea in which an infinite number of choices lie before uso He says, We philosophers and 'free spirits' in fact feel at the news that the 'old God is dead' as if illuminated by a new dawn; our heart overflows with gratitude, astonishment, presentiment, expectation-at last the horizon seems to us again free, ....2 Furthermore, his characterization of freedom in The Twilight 0/ the Idols suggests that the will is free; that freedom is a realizable possibility.
