Development of the Crew Dragon ECLSS
ICES-2020-333 Development of the Crew Dragon ECLSS Jason Silverman1, Andrew Irby2, and Theodore Agerton3 Space Exploration Technologies, Hawthorne, California, 90250 SpaceX designed the Crew Dragon spacecraft to be the safest ever flown and to restore the ability of the United States to launch astronauts. One of the key systems required for human flight is the Environmental Control and Life Support System (ECLSS), which was designed to work in concert with the spacesuit and spacecraft. The tight coupling of many subsystems combined with an emphasis on simplicity and fault tolerance created unique challenges and opportunities for the design team. During the development of the crew ECLSS, the Dragon 1 cargo spacecraft flew with a simple ECLSS for animals, providing an opportunity for technology development and the early characterization of system-level behavior. As the ECLSS design matured a series of tests were conducted, including with humans in a prototype capsule in November 2016, the Demo-1 test flight to the ISS in March 2019, and human-in-the-loop ground testing in the Demo-2 capsule in January 2020 before the same vehicle performs a crewed test flight. This paper describes the design and operations of the ECLSS, the development process, and the lessons learned. National Aeronautics and Space Administration Doing Business with NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility (WFF) in Virginia provides agile, low-cost flight and launch range ser- vices to meet government and commercial sector needs for accessing flight regimes worldwide from the Earth’s surface to the moon and beyond. As a multi-user facility with operational launch range, spaceport, and airfield assets, Wallops is well-positioned to meet ongoing and emerging needs in the science, aerospace, defense, and commercial industries. WALLOPS RANGE The Wallops Range supports many of the mission activities around WFF and abroad. Project managers utlize the support of range services to provide a broad array of technical and instrumentation services, such as radar, optical tracking, telemetry, meteorological, command and control, surveillance and recovery, financial analysis and engineering services to support scientific research and technology development. WALLOPS MOBILE ASSETS Wallops has semi-permanent downrange instrumentation as well as mobile instrumentation to include radar, telemetry, command/control, and data systems that can be transported to offsite and remote locations. Campaigns have been conducted from the semi-permanent locations in Bermuda and North Carolina, as well as from the Arctic and Antarctic regions, South America, Africa, Europe, Australia and even at sea, with our mobile systems. WFF personnel have extensive experience in planning and conducting downrange support and mobile campaigns, developing equipment and systems to support these operations. Downrange and mobile systems include the following: C-band radar, meteorology, optical tracking, orbital tracking, flight termination, telemetry, timing, surveillance, and recovery. AGENCY: Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), DOT ACTION: Policy Statement SUMMARY: This action establishes the FAA’s policy applicable to waivers of FAA ground safety requirements for licensed commercial launch and reentry activities at certain Federal ranges. The Federal ranges that currently meet the criteria for application of this policy are: Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Vandenberg Air Force Base, Wallops Flight Facility, and Kennedy Space Center. KEY WEST IS TRULY A 'PRESIDENTIAL CITY' By HAMPTON DUNN KEY WEST --- The first President to discover the delights of this Southernmost City in the U.S. was president Jefferson Davis of the Confederate States of America. He came here in 1867, shortly after his release from prison following the South's defeat. The first U.S. President to visit here was Ulysses S. Grant, the famed Civil War General, who touched down here on a world tour in 1880. President William Howard Taft came down on Henry Flagler's Overseas Railroad in 1912, with Flagler proudly showing him the sights. Grover Cleveland was one of the early Presidents who liked Key West. President Hervert Hoover, a real Isaac Walton, loved the Keys and stayed here aboard his yacht often during his Presidency. -
