GROOTJEN Abstract In the field of Music Information Retrieval, studies on Hit Song Science are becoming more and more popular. The concept of predicting whether a song has the potential to become a hit song is an interesting challenge. This paper describes my research on how hit song predictors can be utilized to predict hit songs. Three subject groups of predictors were gathered from the Last.fm service, based on a selection of past hit songs from the record charts. By gathering new data from these predictors and using a term frequency-inversed document frequency algorithm on their listened tracks, I was able to determine which songs had the potential to become a hit song. The results showed that the predictors have a better sense on listening to potential hit songs in comparison to their corresponding control groups. Mitt formål har vært å finne ut av, med hovedvekt på det visuelle, hvordan artistene iscenesetter seg selv i forhold til normer og forventninger til kjønn og seksualitet, og hvordan iscenesettelsene påvirkes av å befinne seg i konteksten populærmusikk, med særlig fokus på betydningen av sjangertilhørighet og autentisitet. Mitt overordnede teoretiske perspektiv er et poststrukturalistisk queerperspektiv, med forankring i Judith Butlers perspektiver på kjønn og seksualitet. Fordi kjønn og seksualitet i oppgaven blir forstått som i stor grad diskursivt konstruert, og fordi jeg vil undersøke kjønn og seksualitet i et kulturelt felt, drar jeg også nytte av perspektiver på diskurs, kultur og hegemoni. Fordi mye av materialet mitt er av visuell og ikke tekstlig art, er det nødvendig å finne frem til analytiske grep som gjør at jeg kan ”oversette” fotografiene til tekst. For å gjøre dette benytter jeg meg av en semiotisk tilnærming til fotografiene, i tillegg til Erving Goffmans studie Gender Advertisments (1979). Analysefokus ligger hovedsakelig på visuelle iscenesettelser, som analyseres gjennom artistenes albumcovre og pressefotografier, men også tekst i form av offentlig publiserte intervjuer og omtaler. -

Monitoring the cross-border circulation of European music repertoire within the European Union Report commissioned by EMO & Eurosonic Noordeslag Emmanuel Legrand January 2012 1 About this report: The music scene in Europe is very strong, creative and diversified. Each country within the European Union has a solid local music scene. However, due to the structure of the various national markets, the existence of language diversity and different cultural behaviours, the flow of repertoire across borders within the EU is far from reflecting the notion of one single market. Although there have been embryonic attempts to document the situation of European music repertoire in Europe, the full scale of the situation has never been fully monitored. The European Music Office, in partnership with Eurosonic Noordeslag and Nielsen, has undertaken a preliminary study aimed at monitoring and analysing the cross-border flows of repertoire within the EU in 2011. The study provides quantifiable data on the circulation of repertoire with the ambition of becoming the foundation for an observatory of the circulation of repertoire in Europe. This report has been made possible with the contributions from the following organisations: [NB: the views expressed in this report are those of its author and do not represent those of EMO of Eurosonic Noordeslag.] 2 Executive Summary The study on the circulation of European repertoire within the European Union was commissioned by the European Music Office and Dutch conference and festival Eurosonic Noordeslag.
