Annual Report of the University of the Visual
MESSAGE OF THE VICE CHANCELLOR Introduction Having studied as a student of the University of the Visual and Performing Arts, and later having served it as a Lecturer, and thereafter holding various appointments such as Head of a Department and Dean of a Faculty and after being appointed Vice Chancellor, I make a note with great pleasure about the activities of the University of the Visual and Performing Arts during the year ending 31st December, 2011. As the incumbent Vice Chancellor of this University, I was provided with the opportunity to expand its preliminary stage which started with 300 million rupees to be developed up to 870 million rupees later as the Faculty of Music building, administrative wing and the common student center, with the appointment of Mr. S. B. Dissanayake as minister in charge of my ministry. The problem faced by the University in regard to hostels would be mitigated to a considerable extent due to the possibility by now of commencing the construction activities of female and male hostels bestowed to us through the Mahinda Chinthana of His Excellency the President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka. Through this, it would be possible to provide residential facilities to around 800 students, and there would be a substantial saving in the rents paid to private houses. Whilst no action had been ever taken previously to legally vest in the University the Horton Place premises used by this institute since the year 1949, the Albert Crescent premises used since the year 1952, and other premises at Kohuwela, Dehiwela and Rajagiriya, I paid serious attention to this matter and took action to get all these premises vested.

THE SINHALA THEATRE OF THE EIGHTIES: A FORUM FOR CREATIVE CRITICISM* Ranjini Obeyesekere The past decade has been a time of political upheaval, of violence, terror, and repression. Such periods can inspire enormous creativity or they can be the death of creativity. In the Jaffna peninsula, in the late seventies and early eighties, war and its disruptions produced a new Tamil literature of great vitality, making powerful poetry out of the terror and horror that suddenly overwhelmed ordinary civilian life. It was a poetry of protest, fired by an intense emotional commitment to a cause. The very tensions inherent in the situation inspired and enriched the poetry. I . A similar efflorescence occurred in Sinhala poetry in the seventies, especially the period immediately following the 1971 insurrection. The work of writers like Mahagama Sekera, Parakrama Kodituwakku, Monica Ruwanpathirana, Dharmasiri Rajapakse, Sunil Ariyaratne, Buddhadasa Galappatthy and others brought new life and gave a new direction to Sinhala poetry. 2 It too was a poetry of political commitment, but the emotional intensity of the writing gave it a particular energy that lifted it beyond the merely didactic. By the late eighties this energy seems to have dissipated. As the violence became more intense and widespread, and the issues got ever murkier, and as people no longer had any clear sense of whom or what cause to support, literary writing too seems to have dried Up.3 Those writers who were prolific in the seventies and in the forefront of literary activity were hardly heard of by the late eighties. Of the older generation of writers, Gunadasa Amerasekera continued to write, but his work got increasingly strident and polemical.

Justifying Communal Violence, Recuperating Militancy: Sunil Ariyaratne's Sarungale and Gamini Fonseka's Nomiyena MinisunI NaUn Jayasena Miami University, USA Abstract This paper examines two Sinhala films, Sunil Ariyaratne's Sarungale(1979) and GaminiFonseka'sNom(yenaMinisun (1994), that demonstrate the ambivalence of the Sinhala socio-political establishment towards the Tamil other. However, while Ariyaratne's ambivalence is discriminatory and victimizes the Tamil minority, Fonseka's recuperation of Tamil militancy provides the potential for change in a post-conflict society. InSarungale, Ariyaratneemploys a perspective in which intra-ethnic violence (caste-based violence amongst Hindu Tamils) is juxtaposed with inter-ethnic, communal violence between Sinhalese and Tamils. In so doing, the film justifies anti-Tamil violence experienced by Nadaraja, the Tamil protagonist. However, by casting GaminiFonseka, an icon in Sinhala cinema in the role of Nadaraja, and by using the popular genre of melodrama, Ariyaratne elicits the viewer's sympathy towards the victimization of Tamils. Indeed, it is this type of vacillation towards Tamils, and by extension the Tamil national question, since the 1950s that gives rise to Tamil militancy and the armed conflict ofthe 1980s. Regarding Sri Lanka's armed conflict, much critical attention has been paid to the state's violent suppression of resistance, and considerably less scholarship is devoted to the state's complex relationship to Tamil militancy. Indeed, the reincarnation of former combatants as new stakeholders in the government has challenged static definitions of militants, an identity often conflated with "terrorists". At the same time, however, the state has made arbitrary distinctions between militants by requiring rehabilitation ofsome cadres and not others.

2 Brothers of the Pure Sinhala Fraternity “By my reading, anticolonial nationalism creates its own domain of sovereignty within colonial society well before it begins its political battle with the imperial power,” writes Partha Chatterjee in The Nation and Its Fragments: Colonial and Post- colonial Histories. Before persons form anticolonial political movements, native in- tellectuals carve out unique spaces that Chatterjee designates the “inner domain.” The inner domain is a realm of authentic culture that native intellectuals imagine to remain untouched by colonialism.1 One of the main contributions of Chatterjee’s theory is the way it assigns a new starting place—cultural reform—for conventional histories of colonial-era nationalism, histories that customarily begin with narra- tives about anticolonial movements and battle with the imperial power. I accept the premise of the inner domain but disagree with the emphasis Chatter- jee places on intellectuals of colonized nations who create inner domains in relation to Western hegemony. Chatterjee focuses on Bengali cultural nationalism and its complex interaction with Western culture. But he considers Bengal, the metropolis of the British Raj, to be representative of colonized nations.2 In this chapter I con- tinue to explore the colonial period but focus on an alternative school of scholars, poets, and songwriters to reveal how one cultural movement in Sri Lanka sought to define the nation, not in relation to the West but in opposition to North India. Citation: Prof. Gamini Fonseka Professor Edirisingha Arachchige Gamini Fonseka, Bachelor of Arts (Kelaniya), Master of Arts (Edinburgh) and Doctor of Philosophy (Vaasa) is currently the Professor in English at the University of Ruhuna. He was born in Bandarawela in October 1955.
