Firrhill Easter Sports Camp Monday 15Th Firrhill Easter Sports Camp th Monday 15th – Thursday 18 April 2019 P1-3 9.45am-12.15 - Cost: £24 P4-S1 10am-3pm - Cost: £48 At Firrhill High School, Oxgangs Road North, EH14 1DP The Firrhill High School Sports Camp is a multi-sports camp for pupils who attend the cluster feeder primary schools; Bonaly, Colinton, Longstone, Oxgangs, Pentland and Firrhill high school. Proposed programme, this may be subject to change depending on availability of deliverers P1-3 Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Ball Sports Rugby Fun Dance & Golf Musical Theatre Athletics Gymnastics Tennis Martial Arts P4-S1 Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Parkour Table Tennis Badminton Martial Arts Football Rugby Hockey Volleyball Squash Gymnastics Tennis Shinty Athletics Basketball Dance & Musical Fitness/Bootcamp Theatre Team Challenge Team Challenge Team Challenge Team Challenge Sports Camp Information Each day children will get the opportunity to participate in several different sports, 2 in the morning and 2 in the afternoon. There will be a fun team challenge at the end of the day for the older group. This is a great opportunity for children to try a wide variety of sports, some they may have experienced before and some new ones. Sports offered are a mixture of individual and team. The sports are delivered by qualified sports coaches, development officers, PE teachers and local club coaches. Our coaches and teachers will provide the ideal learning environment for children to learn new skills, develop their level of performance and make friends. Children should bring with them; trainers, sportswear (suitable for the weather as some activities will be outside), packed lunch/snack and plenty to drink. Cost for the camp; P1-3 is £24 and P4-S1 is £48 for the full 4 days. (There is no provision for single days or half days.) Places are free for parents who have registered their child(ren) for Free School Meals and Uniform Grants with the City of Edinburgh Council. If for any reason you think you may qualify for a free place then please contact Lorna, info below. We are offering a discount to families; for 2 siblings there is 20% off, for 3 siblings youngest is free. If you would like a discount then please book your 1st child as below, paying the full amount for that child. Then contact me and I will provide you with a separate booking form for your discounted child (children). Unfortunately, this is the only way I can provide a discount. She took part in the 100m and 200m women’s butterfly and the 4x100m medley relay (women’s). The 100m heats took place on 4 April and Keanna came 4th in her heat, achieving a new Personal Best of 59.63 seconds and also a new Scottish Junior record. She qualified for the semi-finals where she came 11th. The 200m butterfly heats took place on 9 April, and Keanna was placed 10th – a very good result! In the 4x100m medley relay Scotland won a brilliant 5th place and a new Scottish record – outstanding! What an amazing achievement! Huge congratulations to Keanna (right) on her fly swimming success. We wish her the very best for the future. Firrhill News Produced by the Parent Council May 2018 Apprenticeship Evening On Wednesday 14 March a very successful evening was held to inform parents, carers and pupils about different types of apprenticeships. Approximately 100 people attended to hear about Foundation, Modern and Graduate apprenticeships. Jon Buglass from Edinburgh College spoke about the apprenticeship family, detailing foundation and modern in particular. This was followed by Abbey Lewis, an 18 year old student from Tynecastle High School, who is doing a two-year Business and IT modern apprentice with Firrhill High School. Scott Killen from Napier University told us about the exciting new graduate apprenticeships that Napier are running for those interested in computing. The talks comprised a mixture of PowerPoint and video presentations, providing a very interesting and informative evening.

Matters Arising Item 2.1 NP Review & Appendix 2 Edinburgh Partnership Review Report Oct 2018 SW questioned why the Report failed to mention of the Neighbourhood Partnerships and asked if this meant the were being discontinued. Cllr Doggart indicated that the value of NPs was still under discussion as there was a recognition that the Localities set up did not lend itself to informal public engagement. HL indicated that she had sent in the CC’s comments but has not received an acknowledgement. SW noted in recent correspondence CC’s could claim additional funds for community engagement and hire of halls, etc. Cllr Doggart indicated there were circumstances where additional funds could be applied for and the forthcoming Review may see this included in the Community Council Scheme. SW queried what the EACC position was in regard to this. Noted there is a meeting on the 25th but we have no-one able to attended.

Police Report Inspector Dolan presented his report as below. He also said that PC Welsh would hopefully return to work in a few weeks. From 6 March to 10 April 2012 there have been 15 crimes recorded as having been committed in the Fairmilehead area. Of these 15 crimes there have been: • 3 Housebreakings to domestic properties • 2 Vandalisms to motor vehicles • 2 Vandalisms other • 3 Thefts from motor vehicles • 2 Thefts other • 2 minor assaults • 1 Culpable and Reckless Conduct There were 4 vehicle accidents reported this month. There were 98 calls in total to the Fairmilehead/Swanston area of which 35% refered to youth calls. This is a reduction of 15 when compared to the 113 calls received during the same period last year. Crimes of note throughout this period • 31/03/12 – 05/04/12 Theft HB - Buckstone Circle. A screwdriver or similar was used to force open the rear door of the property. Entry was gained and the property was searched, a few items were stolen. The occupiers were on holiday at the time of the breakin. • 04/04/12-05/04/12 Theft HB - Buckstone Rise.

For more information, contact the Parent Council [email protected] Sports Day Follow on Twitter @FirrhillPE Sport s Day was organised in three zones: the “Tough Mudder”; the “Energy Zone”, which comprised various “potted” sports events, face painting, sponge throwing and sumo wrestling suits; and the “Athletics and Fun Races”, which included all of our traditional competitive events plus some fun events – such as the egg and spoon race and the three-legged race. This was the school’s first opportunity to run a competition including all four houses and Caerketton ended up as Firrhill’s first ever Sports Day House Champions. Thanks to Miss Carmichael CL Health and well-being, and S2 Netball to all the Firrhill staff who arranged and ran sports day. On Monday 27 February, the S2 netball team, coached by Mrs Harkness and Miss McCaig, played Lathallen, Dundee in an exciting quarter-final match. The teams were well matched and both played very well throughout, but Firrhill had the upper hand and finally won 31-26 this fast-paced, exciting silver cup match. The S2 team played in the Scottish Schools Cup Finals at Ravenscraig, but lost the Silver Final 23-18 to Balwearie High. Well done to all who took part – great team work! Fanfare Concert Many Firrhill musicians took part in the annual Fanfare Concert at Central Hall Tollcross on 25 November (and also in the December Childline Concert).
