Transfer to our hotel and take a rest before starting with our city tour. Islamabad is a city of many contrasts with green avenues, splendid views of the surrounding hills and busy city life. We have a full day's guided tour around the major sights, including the old city of Rawalpindi, Daman e Koh view point and the huge structure of Shah Faisal Mosque. A short drive away is the museum of Taxila and the remains of Jaulian Monastery. We have time to browse in the museum at the artefacts, many dating back over 2000 years. DAYS 2 - 4 ISLAMABAD TO LAHORE En route to Lahore we visit the Rohtas Fort. The Fort was built in 1540 to guard the Grand Trunk Road, on which we are travelling, and is one of the most imposing historical structures in Pakistan. The next day we take a full day sightseeing around the city of Lahore. We marvel at the Moghul architecture of Lahore Fort that was 5 centuries in the making. The world’s largest mosque (Badshahi or Royal) is our next stop. We can climb the 204 steps to the top of one of the minarets for a bird’s eye view of the old city. We also make a stop at Jahangir’s Tomb and the city Museum. Tonight we will also enjoy the city’s love of food by visiting the ‘food street’ in the old town, where we can find many different dishes and flavours. The Old alledW City is our next stop with its narrow and dimly lit alleys leading from Sarafa Bazaar to Kashmiri Bazaar. Brass inlay work, as well as local handicrafts can be found in abundance here. We visit Shahi Hamam (Royal Bath) and the Wazir Khan Mosque before heading to the Wagah border with India to watch the flag lowering ceremony. Each day there is an elaborate military drill which symbolizes the 2 countries’ rivalry over the last 60 years. DAYS 5 - 7 LAHORE TO BAHAWALPUR The archaeological site of Harappa provides us with an interesting stop off, on our way to Multan. The town flourished as a centre of the Indus Valley Civilization and dates back to 3000 BC. We spend 2 nights in Multan, the city of saints. Our city tour takes in the shrines of the great Mystics, with their shimmering blue glazed tiles. Later we visit the old walled city with its bustling bazaar, where we can watch the artisans at work. www.oasisoverland.co.uk PAGE 2 [email protected] Tel: +44 (0)203 725 8924 We drive on to Bahawalpur, which was an independent state until the creation of Pakistan in 1947. We can easily spend our time here visiting the Nur Mahal and Bahawalpur mosques, as well as the city museum and bazaar. Overnight Bahawalpur. DAYS 8 - 11 BAHAWALPUR TO MOHENJO-DARO Standing proudly in the Cholistan desert, the Derawar Fort is a famed hallmark of Bahawalpur. 40 bastions, standing some 30 feet high and with a total circumference of 1.5kms make this one of Southern Pakistan’s must see sights. The Abbasi family was the ruling Nawab family of Bahawalpur and the graveyard is still owned and controlled by them to this day. We have time to visit the tombs and Royal Graveyard. To add an authentic feel to our tour, there is an optional camel safari in the desert and around the fort. Overnight Bahawalpur. Our trip to Sukkur allows us to stop off at Kot Diji, an important Harappa site (3000 – 2600 BC), which is situated at the foot of the Rohri Hills where a fort (Kot Diji) stands majestically above us. We spend 3 nights at a guest house, which allows us to take in the surrounding area. We enjoy a slower pace with a boat safari to Sukkur Island and a visit to an old Hindu temple (Sadu Bela). The next day we drive to Mohenjo-daro, on the banks of the Indus River. This was the centre of the Indus Civilization and one of the largest in the old world. This 5000 year old city is the earliest manifestation of urbanization in Southern Asia. We also find time to visit Larkana, home town of the famous Bhutto family. DAYS 12 - 15 MOHENJO-DARO TO KARACHI Manchar Lake is the home of the Mohanas tribe, and today we have the great pleasure of going boating with them on the lake. We continue south to Sehwan, famous for the shrine of 13th century Sufi saint Hazrat Lal Shahbaz Qalandar. After watching the sufi ceremony we spend the evening in Sehwan Sharif. The following day we continue to Hyderabad for a full day's exploration of surrounding Hala and Bhit Shah where we find amazing coloured pottery (Kaashi), woodwork (Jandi), cloth printing and woven cloth (Sussi). The area is famous for Ajrak production, a block printed cloth which is the hallmark of the Indus civilization, and we have time to see this production in action. Before returning to our hotel we enjoy time in a glass bracelet factory and bazaar. En-route to our final destination of Karachi, we make time to see Thatta, Makli Hills and Chaukundi. We start in Thatta to view the beautiful architecture of Shah Jahan Mosque. Makli is home to perhaps the largest Necropolis in the world. The tombs at Chaukundi are remarkable for the elaborate and exquisite stone carving – this is unique to the Sindh region and is not found anywhere else in the Islamic world. Overnight Karachi. DAYS 16 KARACHI Our tour ends on a high with a full day's sightseeing in and around Karachi. The National Museum gives us a complete vista of Pakistan's cultural heritage from Stone Age to the birth of the nation. After visiting the oldest Sufi shrine in arachi,K Mohamad Ali Jinnah Mausoleum, we can unwind at Clifton Beach or maybe take a soak in the Manghopir hot sulphur springs, that many believe to have curative powers (and just a few crocodiles!) We are sure to enjoy some of the variety of restaurants in the city for our final meal in akistan.P DAYS 17 KARACHI An early start to the airport unfortunately ends in a sad farewell to our guide and to Pakistan, but the www.oasisoverland.co.uk PAGE 3 [email protected] Tel: +44 (0)203 725 8924 memories are sure to live on.
