Ellen Versen Executive Director AUTHOR BIOGRAPHY Agatha Christie is known throughout the world as the Queen of Crime. Her books have sold over a billion copies in English with another billion in foreign languages. She is the most widely published author of all time and, in many languages, outsold only by the Bible and Shakespeare. She is the author of 66 crime novels, 150 short story collections, over 20 plays, and six novels written under the name Mary Westmacott. Her work includes Murder on the Orient Express, Death on the Nile, and the genre-defining And Then There Were None.

Agatha Christie’s first novel, The Mysterious Affair at Styles, was written to- wards the end of the First World War, in which she served in the VAD. In it she created Hercule Poirot, the little Belgian detective who was destined to become the most popular detective in crime fiction since Sherlock Holmes. It was published by Bodley Head in 1920.

In 1926, after averaging a book a year, Agatha Christie wrote her first mas- terpiece. The Murder of Roger Ackroyd was the first of her books to be pub- lished by Collins and marked the beginning of an author-publisher relation- ship that lasted for 50 years and well over 70 books. ‘Ackroyd’ was also the first of Agatha Christie’s books to be dramatized –under the title Alibi –and to have a successful run in London’s West End.

By 1930, Agatha had introduced a new character to act as detective. When she created Miss Marple, Agatha did not expect her to become Poirot's rival, but with The Murder at the Vicarage, Miss Marple’s first full length out- ing, it appeared she had produced another popular and enduring character.

The Mousetrap, her most successful play of all, opened in 1952 and is the longest-running play in history.

Agatha Christie was made a dame in 1971. She died in 1976.

She was the first and only female playwright to have three productions running simultaneously in London: The Mousetrap, Witness for the Prosecution and Spider’s Web. Christie was made a Dame in 1971 by Queen Elizabeth for her contributions to literature. The Guiness Book of World Records lists Christie as the Best Selling Fiction Writer of All Time. She is also arguably the most successful female playwright of all time. In fact, an Agatha Christie thriller, The Mousetrap, is the longest continuously running play of any kind in the world having opened in November 1952 and still running today.

American audiences are familiar with some of Christie's plays like And Then There Were None, The Mousetrap, Murder on the Orient Express and Wit- ness for the Prosecution. But not Spider’s Web. Christie enthusiasts know the characters of Hercules Perot and Miss Marple. But not Mrs. Clarissa Hailsham-Brown. Many Agatha Christie plays were first written as books or short stories and then adapted into plays like And Then There Were None, Murder on the Nile and The Thirteen Problems. But not Spider’s Web.

When DST was looking to produce a summer Agatha Christie show, I was honored to be asked to direct! We inquired about a few of the more popular titles, but were unable to secure rights. I remembered a play that I had seen while in college (some time ago) that was written by Agatha Christie but was different than her other plays. I mentioned Spider’s Web and we’ve been off to the races with this production ever since.

Billed as a comedic thriller, Spider’s Web was written backstage during re- hearsals and performances of Witness for the Prosecution. It is one of only three of her works that was written as a play first and then adapted into a novel. In Spider’s Web, Christie spoofed her own genre of mystery thrillers. She gives the characters extraordinary circumstances with a fun motive that isn’t easy to figure out. The audience gets treated to a thrilling storyline that is both humorous and poignant. In this production, I have tried to stay faithful to the source material, create enjoyable and humorous moments and allow the fantastic story to be told by an awesome group of actors.

I have been blessed with an amazing cast and a very creative and competent production crew. I’m so glad that you have included live theater in your new normal. Let’s face it, we have all created or been tangled in the spider’s web of life during the pandemic. It’s time to celebrate all life has to give! DID YOU KNOW? • The first female police inspector in England was Maud Westin the 1920s. • Spider's Web wasn't the only work of literature written in 1954 that features the game of supposing. The Lord of the Flies also uses "supposing" as a plot devise. • 14,300 pounds in 1969 would be worth about $280,000 in 2021 - a sizable amount for a motive. • Herzoslovakia is a fictional Balkan country in Europe used by Agatha Christie in several of her works. • Spider's Web, which premiered in London’s West End in 1954, is Agatha Christie's second most successful play (744 performances), having run longer than Witness for the Prosecution, which premiered in 1953 (458 performances). It is only eclipsed by The Mousetrap. • Spider's Web has had 3 TV productions (1955, 1956, 1982) and one film adaptation in 1960. This film starred Glynis Johns as Clarissa. You might know Glynis Johns from her other works including Mrs. Banks in the original Mary Poppins. • Although Spider's Web was popular on London's West End, the play has never had a Broadway production. COLLEEN ROSE THOMPSON Clarissa Hailsham-Brown Colleen Rose Thompson is delighted to appear in Agatha Christie's Spider's Web at DST! Since January 2019, she's had a marvelous time rejoining the theatre world and finding community all across the Valley. Her favorite previous role was Hannah/Xavia Jones/et al. in the Arizona premiere of PUFFS! (also a Desert Stages production). Most recently, she was seen as Boris/Hec- tor in B3's virtual production of A Wolf at the Door. IG: @colleen.rose.art #HopeThroughHollis.

SCOTT SIMS Sir Rowland Delahyne Scott Sims is excited to be in his first Desert Stages production. His favorite roles include Starlight Com- munity Theatre’s Dracula (Charles), Four Weddings And An Elvis (John/Elvis), and in Zao Theatre’s Our Town (Charles Webb), and Ragtime (Henry Ford). Scott teaches choir/guitar at Deer Valley High School and is Praise Band Leader at Living Water Lutheran Church. He would like to thank Dan for the opportuni- ty and his lovely wife, Debbi, for the encouragement.

JAMES D BROWN, JR. Hugo Birch While this is James’ Arizona theatrical debut he’s performed for local audiences as a Dueling Pianist since he relocated from Michigan to be a house player at Shout House! in Glendale in 2009. Previ- ous credits include Lt. Sam Weinberg in A Few Good Men, Eugene Jerome in Broadway Bound, and Clau- dio in Much Ado About Nothing. He’s thrilled to be working with this talented cast and crew, and thanks Claire, Max and Abby for their support. WHO'S WHO IN THE CAST CODY BRO Jeremy Warrender Cody Bro was born in Brooklyn, New York. This is Cody's first performance at Desert Stages. Cody is an avid murder-mystery fan and is excited to be act- ing in an Agatha Christie play. One day soon Cody hopes he will be the most wildly popular actor in the whole world, a household name across every conti- nent around the entire globe. In his spare time he hangs out with his friends, or his wife, Emily.

BRIANNA O'BRIEN Pippa Hailsham-Brown Brianna O’Brien is thrilled to be returning to the stage at Desert Stages Theater with this talented cast. Some of her favorite past performance have been as Ugly Duckling in Feathered at DST, Gracie Gopher in Winnie the Pooh a Christmas Tail at VYT, and as part of the children’s choir in La Boheme with the Arizona Opera.

LYNN GOLDEN Mildred Peake Lynn happily returns for her ninth DST show! She has also been seen in A Christmas Story, Damn Yankees, Moon Over Buffalo (DST) Annie, The Pajama Game (Starlight), and The Sound of Music (Zao). Lynn is a Grant Officer at ASU. Many thanks to my constant sup- port team - Bear, Abby, Brad, Momma, the Ashlocks, Ted, Amie, and Eric. This one is for Mama Pat Ashlock – who would have laughed the loudest at Miss Peake. WHO'S WHO IN THE CAST JOHNATHAN GONZALES Elgin Jonathan Gonzales is excited to make his first -ap pearance on-stage since before the Event. In the Before-Times he appeared in such shows as Ajax (Menelaus), Puffs (Wayne Hopkins), and Copenha- gen (Werner Heisenberg). He would like to thank Dan Ashlock and the other fine folks at DST for the opportunity to appear in this wonderful show.

BOB TAYLOR Henry Hailsham-Brown Bob is happy to be making his debut with Desert Stages Theatre after moving here from Pennsylvania. Bob has been active in all aspects of theatre for 45 years. Some of his favorite roles were Lombardi in Lombardi, Morrie in Tuesdays with Morrie, Grandpa in You Can't Take It With You, Norman in On Golden Pond, Willie Clark in Sunshine Boys and Doc in Mister Roberts where he met his wife, Deb. Bob now resides in Apache Junction with Deb and their two dogs who are also actors. Favorite quote: There is nothing to compare to Live Theatre. You don't get a second take.

BRADY ANDERSON Oliver Costello/Doctor Brady is looking forward to his debut at Desert Stag- es Theatre playing an absolute piece of work that no one will miss if the character just so happens to get murdered. Arizona credits include: Seussical, Wizard of Oz, Crucible (Theater Works), Big Fish, Much Ado About Nothing (Brelby), Lucky Stiff (ART), Jane Eyre (MCC) and Charley’s Aunt (Hale). KATIE LILY LAMBERT Inspector Lord Katie Lily Lambert is thrilled to finally be back on the stage! A graduate of The Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute NY, credits include Donna in Mamma Mia (Starlight AZ), Hobson in Wonder Women (Next Stage LA), Carol in Carol of Carroll Gardens (Broad- wayCon NYC), Victoria in What Say You? (Producer’s Club NY), Lady Beaconsfield in Jekyll and Hyde (Arizona Regional Theatre) and a personal favorite, Ghost of Christmas Past in A Christmas Carol (Silver Star AZ).

ZACK PEPE Constable Jones Zack Pepe is super excited to return to the stage af- ter being forced off of it for over a year! Most recent- ly, pre-pandemmy, he was seen in Nice Work if You Can Get It at Arizona Regional Theatre and Pirates of Penzance at Mesa Encore Theatre. Hopefully every- one can figure out the killer. ;) Enjoy! WHO'S WHO IN THE CREW ELLEN VERSEN Executive Director Ellen is thrilled to be the Executive Director at Desert Stages. She has worked many years in the nonprofit and arts sectors, bringing years of theater leadership, development, and business experience to her new position. Together with the DST team, she hopes to increase revenue by inviting new artists, participants, and patrons into the DST family. Efforts will also be made to develop meaningful relationships with cor- porations, foundations, and individuals to ensure the future of this performing arts organization. Ellen grew up in Pasadena, CA, and has lived in Scotts- dale for 25 years. Her husband Walter has worked in the music industry with bands and artists like Queen, Genesis, Heart, REO Speedwagon, and Tower of Power. The couple have two grown children, Joe and Emily. The entire family is fond of travel, the arts, and Jeopardy! WHO'S WHO IN THE CREW DAN ASHLOCK, JR. Director In 2007, Dan saw his first show at Desert Stages after relocating to Phoenix and was instantly enamored. He made his DST acting debut in Fiddler on the Roof (2014) with his daughter, Quinlyn. Dan and his fam- ily fell in love with the heart and soul of DST and have never left. For Desert Stages, Dan has directed Damn Yankees, Puffs!, Oliver, Spamalot, Seussical, Moon Over Buffalo, 6 RMS, RIV VU, and Dark at the Top of the Stairs. Other directing credits include The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Mamma Mia, The Year of Magical Thinking, Holy Martimony!, and The Pajama Game (Starlight), and Farce of Habit (Trilogy). He has performed in productions in Arizona, Kansas, Pennsylvania and Maryland including Young Frankenstein, A Murder is Announced, and Barefoot in the Park at DST. Dan earned a BS in Speech Com- munication/Theater from NAU and a MS in Counsel- ing at CCSU. He lives in Phoenix with his wife Renee and they are the proud parents of two adult children, Nathan and Quinlyn.

SEAN GALLEGOS Stage Manager/ Light Board Op Sean Gallegos is a current senior vocal performance and choral education major at NAU. This is his first working for DST as a stage manager and he enjoys the welcoming environment and professionalism. He will also be working as a camp counselor for DST's summer camp during sessions 3 and 4. He sings as an opera singer for the Lyric Theater at NAU as a tenor, and people can find him singing various roles such as the Podestà in Mozart's La Finta Giardiniera. WHO'S WHO IN THE CREW

RICHARD "MICKEY" Costume Designer COURTNEY Mickey has been costuming for the past 20 years all around the valley. Here at DST, he feels at home. His most recent costume work was You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown in Cullity Hall. He is looking forward to continuing working the Actor’s Café and Main Stage Cullity Hall at DST. He wants to thank his wife Rhea and his kids Becca and Matt for their support and patience.

BRADY FISCUS Lighting Designer Brady Fiscus is so excited to be light designing Spi- der’s Web! Brady has worked both on and offstage around the valley since 2016. Some of his favorite jobs include stage managing Puffs and Tick, Tick...Boom! (both DST), light designing Mary Poppins and Puffs (both DST) and playing Sonny Flood in The Dark at the Top of the Stairs (DST). He would like to thank Dan, the cast, and the rest of the amazing crew.

NICOLE THOMPSON Sound Designer Nicole Thompson is an award winning sound de- signer making her debut at Desert Stages Theatre. Nicole is a practicing stage manager that dips into different areas of the backstage along with the on- stage realm. Working on productions such as Alice and Wonderland, Dracula, Once on this Island, and as of recent, many virtual shows during the pandem- ic. WILL SNIDER Sound Board Op Will Snider is a freelance sound designer and techni- cian and also holds the position of Campus Manager at Phoenix Center for the Arts. He has worked for many companies on various productions including the Herberger Theater Center, Valley Youth Theatre, Lonely Street Productions, and Nearly Naked The- atre Company. This is his first production at DST and he is very excited to participate!

TIMOTHY MCCANDLESS Dialect Coach Tim is excited to work with Desert Stages Theatre again! He is currently the theatre director and drama teacher at Saguaro High School. Tim enjoys direct- ing, acting, dialect coaching, and designing lights with different theatre companies across the valley. He thanks his grandparents for introducing him to the wonderful world of theatre. PHOTOS

Young actors receive hands-on theatrical experience in a non-competitive, fun environment. Each session covers all aspects of a musical production in- cluding auditions, staging, and choreography. A typical day includes voice, dance, acting, games, and arts and crafts. Daily, each camper must bring a sack lunch, a snack, and his/her own water bottle. Each session concludes with a live performance for parents. CAMP PRICING: $425 per child per camp $390 for second child or session $100 non-refundable deposit.
