The List of Church of Ireland Parish Registers
THE LIST of CHURCH OF IRELAND PARISH REGISTERS A Colour-coded Resource Accounting For What Survives; Where It Is; & With Additional Information of Copies, Transcripts and Online Indexes SEPTEMBER 2021 The List of Parish Registers The List of Church of Ireland Parish Registers was originally compiled in-house for the Public Record Office of Ireland (PROI), now the National Archives of Ireland (NAI), by Miss Margaret Griffith (1911-2001) Deputy Keeper of the PROI during the 1950s. Griffith’s original list (which was titled the Table of Parochial Records and Copies) was based on inventories returned by the parochial officers about the year 1875/6, and thereafter corrected in the light of subsequent events - most particularly the tragic destruction of the PROI in 1922 when over 500 collections were destroyed. A table showing the position before 1922 had been published in July 1891 as an appendix to the 23rd Report of the Deputy Keeper of the Public Records Office of Ireland. In the light of the 1922 fire, the list changed dramatically – the large numbers of collections underlined indicated that they had been destroyed by fire in 1922. The List has been updated regularly since 1984, when PROI agreed that the RCB Library should be the place of deposit for Church of Ireland registers. Under the tenure of Dr Raymond Refaussé, the Church’s first professional archivist, the work of gathering in registers and other local records from local custody was carried out in earnest and today the RCB Library’s parish collections number 1,114. The Library is also responsible for the care of registers that remain in local custody, although until they are transferred it is difficult to ascertain exactly what dates are covered. -

Tipperary. 2ist October 2020, Re: TipperaryCounty Development Plan Review A Chara, Please find hereunder the comments of Offaly County Council in respect of the review of the existing North and South Tipperary County Development Plans and the preparation of the new Tipperary County Development Plan for the period 2022-2028. Offaly County Council welcomes the opportunity to comment on the process and looks forward to continued co-operation with and between both Authorities; with particular reference to social, cultural and economic development and the protection of the environment. An example of such recent cooperation is in relation to Tipperary County Council having recently received an allocation under the Active Travel fund to provide a cycle route linking the towns of Nenagh and Roscrea with some of the route passing through Co. Offaly. Offaly County Council is currently reviewing its County Development Plan 2014-2020 and preparing a new County Development Plan 2021-2027, with a draft currently on public display until 7th October 2020. Birr County Offaly is located on the Tipperary- Offaly county boundary. Within the Draft Offaly county Development Plan, it should be noted that the proposed settlement typology description for Birr is as a 'Self Sustaining Growth Town'. This type of settlement is described in the Regional Spatial & Economic Strategy for the Eastern & Midlands Region as a settlement which is a sub-county market town that has significant employment and service functions relative to its regional and local catchment, has good regional transport links and has the capacity for continued commensurate growth to become more self-sustaining. -
126 Chapter 6 Is 'No One As Irish As Barack O'bama'?
Chapter 6 Is ‘No One As Irish as Barack O’Bama’? Rebecca Chiyoko King-O’Riain You don't believe me, I hear you say But Barack's as Irish, as was JFK His granddaddy's daddy came from Moneygall A small Irish village, well known to you all Toor a loo, toor a loo, toor a loo, toor a lama There's no one as Irish As Barack O'Bama - The Corrigan Brothers (with Shay Black) On May 23, 2011, Barack Obama visited Ireland for the first time and amidst an enthusiastic crowd of 50,000 people gathered in College Green, Dublin began his speech thus: “My name is Barack Obama of the Moneygall Obamas. I’ve come home to find the apostrophe we lost somewhere along the way” (RTE 23/6/2011). The crowd went wild despite the rain and high winds of the classic Irish summer. Obama’s trip to Ireland, his warm embrace by the Irish nation as a ‘true son of Ireland’ (Lord 2011), and his own recognition of the trip to Ireland as a trip home, all served to underscore not Obama’s roots and his newfound Irishness. Why does being Irish matter for Barack Obama? What do people in Ireland see when they look at him? Is his biraciality a factor? Debates about what Barack Obama actually is racially tell us more about the state of racial thinking in the US and Ireland than they do about any racial reality that Obama represents as a multiracial man of both Kenyan and Irish ancestry. -

Trees cover 30% of its 11752 acres trees (mainly broadleaf including beech, lime, sycamore, horse chestnut), while the grounds have hosted a herd of fallow deer since the 1660s when the Duke of Ormond introduced them. Offaly: COUNTY GEOLOGY OF IRELAND 1 OFFOFFOFFALALALYYY AREA OF COUNTY: 1,999 square kilometres or 771 square miles COUNTY TOWN: Tullamore OTHER TOWNS: Banagher, Birr, Clara, Edenderry, Moneygall GEOLOGY HIGHLIGHTS: Slieve Bloom Mountains, Mushroom Stones AGE OF ROCKS: Silurian to Carboniferous Camcor Valley in the Slieve Bloom Mountains These mountains are composed of a core of older Silurian rocks surrounded by younger Devonian sandstones. 2 COUNTY GEOLOGY OF IRELAND: Offaly Geological Map of County Offaly Green:Green:Green: Silurian; Beige:Beige:Beige: Devonian sandstones and conglomerates; Light blue: Lower Carboniferous limestone. Geological history The oldest rocks in Offaly are those of Slieve Bloom, an inlier of older rocks surrounded entirely by younger rocks. The core of the inlier are the hills of Silurian sedimentary slaty rocks, but these are poorly exposed. They are protected by thick sandstones of Devonian age. These can be seen in the eroded trenches of river valleys such as the Silver River, and were originally deposited by rivers around 380 million years ago. In the Carboniferous Slieve Bloom was probably an island in the shallow tropical seas. Today, few of Offaly’s rocks are exposed. They have been eroded down over millions of years to a low lying plain, and are now blanketed by bogs and glacial deposits left by the last Ice Age. Offaly has some of the largest and finest bogs in Ireland’s midlands. Offaly: COUNTY GEOLOGY OF IRELAND 3 Eskers at Kilcormac The most recent development occurred during the last 1.6 million years when ice ages came and went, the last ending about 10,000 years ago and leaving Offaly with some of the finest glacial deposits of sand and gravel across the lowlands. -
