    CHAPTER 7 THE MASTER BUILDERS ASSOCIATION OF NSW 1946 - 1960 GROWTH, PROSPERITY AND A CHANGE IN STRUCTURE Introduction The period from 1946-1960 was one of economic boom. A more affluent society created greater demand for building. The building industry faced labour shortages that were eased by post-war immigration involving assisted British and European migrants, which by June 1959 had numbered 360,156 and 341,685 respectively.1 The creation of the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric and Irrigation Scheme in 1949 boosted the federal government’s immigration program by attracting large numbers of engineers and skilled tradesmen from overseas. Initially there was as a scarcity of building materials which was exacerbated by restrictive legislation designed to monitor the distribution of building materials. In seeking to meet the need for public housing, the Housing Commission of NSW virtually confiscated available labour and materials to the detriment of the private housing sector. Legislation designed to assist returned soldiers in obtaining housing created hardship for property owners and property investors. In the early 1950s building controls were eased by the NSW government. There were external changes that impacted on the MBA. The increase in the size of building as well as State investment in power stations attracted larger firms from overseas and changed the character of the building industry. New construction methods also created a need for more complex contractual relationships and a need for more sophisticated management of industrial relations. While the functions of the MBA/NSW remained unchanged, these changes were to impact on the structure of the association. Further, cracks appeared in the longstanding ‘internal equilibrium’ of the MBA/NSW, particularly immediately following the end of the Second World War.

    8 April 2019 Item 11.7 Preserving the History of our City’s Labour Movement at the Eveleigh Locomotive Workshop Moved by Councillor Scott, seconded by Councillor Thalis – (A) Council note: (i) the Eveleigh Locomotive Workshop has a rich social, cultural and industrial history; (a) the site was acquired by the NSW government in 1879 and operated as one of Australia’s largest and most advanced locomotive workshops for over 100 years, from the 1880s to 1989; (b) the Workshop provided employment to thousands of working class people in the inner-city during this time, including women in a diverse array of roles, local Aboriginal people and, from the 1950s onwards, large numbers of new migrants to Australia; (c) multiple generations of families worked alongside each other at the Workshop, and many people were employed there for their entire working lives. This, along with strong ties to local trade union and Labor and Communist Party groups, created a strong sense of community at the Workshop; and (d) few workers could afford to buy or even rent their own homes prior to the 1950s, and lived in boarding houses in nearby Eveleigh and Darlington; (ii) the Workshop was a hub for industrial activism and the labour movement in Sydney; (a) eight strikes were conducted at the site between 1915 and 1917 to protest poor conditions and declining wages; (b) the Great Strike of 1917 began at the Workshop, when along with 1,100 men at Randwick Tramway Depot, 3000 workers at Eveleigh downed tools and led a General Strike which lasted 82 days; (c) local trade

    DOBELL’S CASE (Draft 21 April 2016) Over the past couple of years, the world has been marking various anniversaries associated with the great conflict of 1914-1918. Our story starts in the midst of that war. A little over one hundred years ago, on 15 March 1916, when the founder-editor of The Bulletin, J F Archibald1 made his last will. Archibald’s will Archibald, a Francophile who preferred to be called Jules François Archibald, directed his executor2 to hold one tenth of his residuary estate upon trust for a period and: to pay the income thereof to the trustees of the New South Wales National Gallery3 to provide an annual prize to be styled ‘The Archibald Prize’ for the best portrait preferentially of some man or woman distinguished in Art Letters Science or Politics painted by any artist resident in Australasia during the twelve months preceding the date fixed by the trustees for sending in the pictures.4 Archibald outlived the Great War. He died on 10 September 1919 and on 10 October 1919 the Supreme Court of New South Wales granted probate of his Will - expeditious service from the court and the profession. The estate was sworn for probate at £92,218. In 2016 terms a value of about $7,000,000. _________________________ 1 John Feltham Archibald (1856-1919). 2 Perpetual Trustee Co (Ltd). 3 This was plainly intended to refer to the then National Art Gallery of New South Wales. It had been founded in 1871 as the Academy of Art; in 1880 it opened in new premises as the Art Gallery of New South Wales; between 1883 and 1958 was the National Art Gallery of New South Wales; and in 1958 it reverted to the title Art Gallery of New South Wales.

Three years had passed when I asked a group of his professional colleagues and friends what they thought could happen with the work he had done. They felt that the work was of value, both for original and insightful contributions which Greg was making towards the understanding of regional development governance processes and for his documentation of a unique set of interviews which he conducted with Hunter people. Further, although his draft manuscript required editing, that once edited it should be made accessible. The way ahead became clear when Len Regan, a member of the group, offered to do the editing.
