Wisconsin Public Television World War II Stories Project Transcript of an Oral History Interview with DONALD COLLINS Radio Striker, Submariner, Navy, World War II. 2002 OH 916 1 OH 916 Collins, Donald E. (1924-2006). Oral History Interview, 2002. Video Recording : 5 videorecordings (ca. 145 min.); ½ inch, color. Transcript : 0.1 linear ft. (1 folder) Abstract: Donald E. Collins, a Sunbury, Pennsylvania native, discusses his World War II service in the Pacific theater as a radio striker aboard the USS Finback , a Navy submarine. Collins talks about being too light weight to join the Marines, enlisting in the Navy, boot camp at Sampson Naval Training Center (New York), and practical jokes played during time in an outgoing unit. He discusses assignment to code school at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, meeting his future wife at a USO, attending submarine school at Naval Submarine Base New London (Connecticut), and being inspected for possession of liquor by Charles Spritz. Shipped to Hawaii aboard one of the “Kaiser's coffins” (an escort carrier built by Kaiser Shipbuilding Co.), Collins describes uneasy relations with the Seabees, earning extra money cutting meat, and being evacuated due to a fire. Assigned to the USS Finback (SS-230), he mentions crash course training in wolf pack procedure to work with other boats, and he explains their use of radio silence, LORAN (Long Range Navigation), and offensive tactics. He describes the different sounds heard while underwater, including identifying ships by the sound of their screws. Collins describes submarine rest camps and reflects on the privileges submariners had. He relates his first experience being near exploding depth charges, and he talks about duty in the conning tower and daily life.

  • 01-10 January 25, 2010 C&P Brown Water Navy Tracking Program
VA&R Archived Bulletins can be found at www.legion.org 01-10 January 25, 2010 C&P Brown Water Navy Tracking Program The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), in a January 2010 Compensation and Pension (C&P) Service Bulletin, announced a new initiative to collect data on Vietnam naval operations for the purpose of providing regional offices with information to assist with development in Haas related disability claims based on herbicide exposure from Navy Veterans. To date, they have compiled verification from various sources showing that a number of offshore “blue water” naval vessels conducted operations on the inland “brown water” rivers and delta areas of Vietnam. VA has also identified certain vessel types that operated primarily or exclusively on the inland waterways. The ships and dates of inland waterway service are listed below. If a veteran’s service aboard one of these ships can be confirmed through military records during the time frames specified, then exposure to herbicide agents can be presumed without further development. This is an ongoing project and the list below is by no means complete. Therefore, veterans on vessels that traveled the inland waterways not identified below will need to submit evidence supporting brown water service. The vessels currently identified via this program include: All vessels of Inshore Fire Support [IFS] Division 93 during their entire Vietnam tour o USS Carronade (IFS 1) o USS Clarion River (LSMR 409) [Landing Ship, Medium, Rocket] o USS Francis River (LSMR 525) o USS White River (LSMR 536)

  • Uss Bristol Dd 857 Veterans Association
USSVETERANS BRISTOL ASSOCIATION DD 857 FALL 2010 NEWSLETTER Reunion Highlights Well, we had another great reunion in Philadelphia, 7-10 October. The officers of our association have done it again. Gentlemen and Lady (Shirley Clark, Historian and all the Bristol ladies) thank you for a wonderful time. Jeri Glass, our great reunion coordinator from BRAT did a spectacular job, which Jeri makes to look easy. The welcome dinner buffet was superb on Thursday night. Many of the attendees took advantage of the optional tours of Philadelphia and the USS New Jersey BB 62. On Saturday morning, we convened the business meeting, re- electing the current officers with one change: Paul Ratcliffe has accepted the vice president position. Thank you Paul. Did you know that Paul had the uncanny foresight to film some of the daily activities while serving in Bristol. Then, Paul produced a great VHS tape transferring all of those 8mm videos to VHS and adding Vicotry At Sea music. Now we have to convince Paul to transfer the VHS to DVD so that I can use images in our newsletter. Duane Haugan again fulfilled the arduous task of photographer extraordinaire. Doing that is along with photo Placque commemorating the POWs of Revolutionary War documenting all of the other activities. Bob Burns video who suffered and died in British jails. God bless these documented as well. Tony Molnar along with being our treasurer, also, arranged the table reservations for those of us POWs. This memorial is located in Washington Square Park who wanted to sit together. This is all time consuming stuff.
