Western Electric 1904 No. 30A Peg Dialer Phone. Sold for: $ 9,500.00 Lot #743 (Sale Order 743 of 715) to onsite

Includes original switching system. Extremely rare Western Electric No. 30A 100 station peg dialer. This was introduced in Queens, New York in 1902 and then about 40 other systems in small communities in the northeast. This small switching system exchange was Bell's answer to a dialing system, but it was only temporary. Most of the systems had to be discontinued when they outgrew the maximum connectible size of the system (100 lines). These were produced by Western Electric between 1902 and 1904. Bell discontinued the Queens system after 1904. It wasn't until 1916 that Bell bought all the automatic dial patents from Automatic Electric Company and then introduced a real dial telephone in 1919. Pictures also show the original switching apparatus. It has a glass cover, like a Pyrex dish. Very complex switching system and one picture of the elaborate wiring underneath. This is a museum quality telephone & switching system combination that has historical significance in the earliest days of the telephone. The telephone is rare enough but you may never find another original switching system. Condition (Very Good). Size 13 1/2" T.

Extremely rare, this is considered one of the first desk telephones manufactured by Automatic Electric Company. In 1903 the Strowger dial was redesigned to conform to a desk instrument. The finger wheel was designed with the sun's rays emanating from the center of the dial and that's where it got the name "sunburst" dial. The forked spear hook has rounded bulbous ends, not seen on the earlier wall instruments. The transmitter face plate and cup are of the earlier small diameter, plain, without markings. This 1903 telephone is taller , has a smaller domed base without a button, a skinny perch and outside wire leading to the transmitter. The scans are from an original ad and article between 1902 and 1904. The back plate is a reproduction but an exact match and the rest of the phone is original, including the base plate and the rest under the base. Size 12" T.

1900 Garl Electric Company Desk Set. Sold for: $ 5,500.00 Lot #750 (Sale Order 750 of 715) to onsite

The very best thing about this unusual telephone (besides the fact that it is in remarkable condition) is the original advertisement that shows this exact telephone. It isn't likely that anyone today would remember or have any idea that this telephone existed, but if you will look at the ad first, you will see just how special and how rare this telephone is. It is a Garl Electric Company sixpoint intercommunicating desk set. This system accommodates connections between any two telephones and any numbers of pairs of telephones on the same system and allows them to converse simultaneously without interference. The transmitter is a granular carbon solid back, and the receiver is a unique double pole outside terminal receiver. All contacts and springs are made of German silver. Please see the scan of an original ad for this exact telephone from a publication back in 1900. Original coil and wires are in the base, everything is there except the inside of the transmitter is empty. You would never know it without opening it up. Size 12" T.

Fantastic No. 9 long distance desk telephone from Western Electric. The base is spun brass over heavy cast iron and a solid brass handle. American Bell No. 2 Speaking Tube Desk Set. Sold for: $ 40,000.00 Lot #802 (Sale Order 802 of 715) to onsite

In 1892, one year before Bell's original patent expired, he introduced the first upright desk top telephone in America, available in two styles. Model No. 1 was a potbelly and No. 2 was a swirl base (see scan). This desk set is the earliest original Bell desk stand known to exist in a private collection. It is the American Bell No. 2 Speaking Tube Desk Telephone. It is equipped with a high resistance lettered White Solid Back 6 digit beveled edge transmitter code No. 225 and a code No. 129 unipolar low resistance receiver. The scan is taken from the earliest known catalog illustration of an upright desk telephone in the United States. Dated June 27, 1894 it shows the original three designs that Bell introduced to the world, beginning in 1892. No. 1 and No. 2 supported a speaking tube transmitter. Since the first telephones were heavy wooden wall telephones, and since Bell's fundamental patents for the telephone were expiring in 1893 and 1894, opening the door to competition, Bell was motivated to keep a competitive edge by introducing newer, better telephones. The upright desk top telephone was introduced for the first time with these Bell speaking tubes in 1892. By 1894, all of the serious competitors were building candlesticks to compete and were rolling them out as Bell's second patent expired. Size 13" T.

1897 No. 88 C "San Francisco" Potbelly. Sold for: $ 4,500.00 Lot #803 (Sale Order 803 of 715) to onsite

This is a beautiful 88C long distance desk telephone made by California Electrical Works in a joint effort between the Western Electric Company and the Pacific Telephone Company, a Bell subsidiary in San Francisco (that's why it is commonly called "San Francisco" potbelly). Unlike most potbellies of its time, the base and shaft are made of a bronze alloy and cast as one piece. This also has a marked, high resistance White Solid Back sevendigit smooth edge transmitter and a marked American Bell outside terminal long pole receiver. Size 12" T.

1898 Solid Cast Brass Potbelly. Sold for: $ 7,500.00 Lot #804 (Sale Order 804 of 715) to onsite

This is a Western Electric solid cast brass potbelly desk stand made for the American Bell Telephone Company. This model does not have a code number assigned to it but is listed as an 1895 cast brass desk stand in the 1936 Bell Telephone Laboratories Historical Museum documents. American Bell transmitter is marked on the back, short switch hook, OST pony receiver. Original base plate is intact. The closed loop switch hook would indicate that this was a later model, probably 1898 1899. Size 12" T.

1900 No. 21A "Erie". Sold for: $ 5,500.00 Lot #805 (Sale Order 805 of 715) to onsite

This may look like a common candlestick but it is one of the more rare Western Electric upright telephones because it was only made for about a year and there are very few of these that are known to still exist. It is the model No. 21A desk set, called the "Erie" model because it was made by Western Electric Company for the Erie Telephone & Telegraph Company in 1900. It was patterned after the Bell Wisconsin candlestick and is equipped with a White Solid Back transmitter code No. 122 bipolar receiver. This telephone is in outstanding original condition, including the thin leather base plate under the base. Size 11" T.

1900 The Connecticut Telephone & Electric Co. Sold for: $ 2,750.00 Lot #806 (Sale Order 806 of 715) to onsite

Beautiful Connecticut pencil shaft on decorative rusted iron base. This was a popular base during that period and once the nickel plating had worn off, it got rusty. Several manufacturers used it. Small simple design with a watch case receiver. Extremely rare. Size 11" T.

1894 Interior Telephone Co Colvin System Desk Set Sold for: $ 2,000.00 Lot #807 (Sale Order 807 of 715) to onsite

This very rare Colvin wooden potbelly was one of the earliest upright desk stands. The Interior Telephone Company manufactured and sold the only noninfringing carbon transmitter available to the public. The transmitter used no induction coil and employed no carbon button. Because this telephone was introduced just as Bell's original telephone patents were expiring, it was designed carefully "to avoid infringing existing patents". Please see the Colvin telephone pictured in the original sales catalog from the late 1890s. Size 11 1/4" T.

Beautiful P.H.&R potbelly with marked transmitter and unique lettering along the rim of the potbelly. Single button in the base, unusual switch hook (unique to P.H.& R.) and a Ericsson outside terminal receiver. 1899 Manhattan Electrical Supply Co. Sold for: $ 1,900.00 Lot #810 (Sale Order 810 of 715) to onsite

Extremely rare Manhattan tapered shaft desk set with marked transmitter. Manhattan Electric Supply Company manufactured quite a few upright desk set designs and a few, like the tapered shaft, are very scarce. Outside terminal long pole receiver. Scan is from an original Manhattan Electrical Supply Co. catalog showing this exact telephone. Outstanding original telephone, extremely rare. Size 11 1/2" T.

Unmarked Desk Set with Unique Peg Switch Hook. Sold for: $ 950.00 Lot #811 (Sale Order 811 of 715) to onsite

This is a really neat desk set. Rather than having a traditional switch hook to hold the receiver, instead the watch case receiver has a peg on the back and the peg fits into a spring loaded slot on the post of the telephone. It may have been designed to get around the Bell switch hook patent or maybe it was just a novel idea to build a more efficient telephone. The transmitter has no markings and, although it is sitting on a familiar base, the maker is unknown. Never seen another like it, but all the working parts are there, so consider this one extremely rare. Size 10" T.

1915 Magnavox AntiNoise Desk Set. Sold for: $ 1,600.00 Lot #812 (Sale Order 812 of 715) to onsite

Magnavox antinoise desk stand. Not your average candlestick, but a very neat alternative to the typical candlestick of that time period. Caller would put receivers over each ear and talk into transmitter. Their voice would vibrate a diaphragm in the transmitter. Most background noise would not be picked up in this directional transmitter. Very interesting concept for that time period from a manufacturer we all know today. Marked on base and transmitter/receiver. These are highly collectable and very rare. Size 12 1/2" T.

Hibbard, Spencer, Bartlett & Co. was a pre1914 hardware store and distributor. They used the name RevONoc as their trade name (private label) to put on products that were sold through their stores but manufactured by someone else. In this case, American Electric manufactured this desk stand and allowed H.S.B. & Co. to put their RevONoc brand on it. H.S.B. & Co. also put their brand on guns and ammunition along with other specialty items sold in an early hardware store, like scales. Very rare telephone from about 1910. Size 10 1/2" L.

Then, the candlestick didn't change, but the name on the back of the transmitter did. You can see how similar candlesticks are. Garford was only in business two years until it was sold to StrombergCarlson Telephone Manufacturing Company in 1916. Dean candlesticks are a lot more common, Garford candlesticks are rare.
