AFC Ajax will look to maintain their proud unbeaten record against German visitors when Borussia Dortmund come calling. The Dutch champions have posted 12 wins in 13 home games in Amsterdam against sides and will hope for a lucky 13th against a Dortmund team who beat them 1-0 in Germany on matchday one. • Jürgen Klopp's visitors are aiming to reach the last 16 for the first time since 2002/03; the unbeaten Group D leaders need a point at the Amsterdam ArenA to secure progress. Past meetings • Ajax coach captained the team that overcame Ottmar Hitzfeld's Dortmund when these clubs met in the 1995/96 UEFA Champions League quarter-finals. Absent from the 2-0 first-leg success in Germany – where Edgar Davids and Patrick Kluivert scored – De Boer started the second leg as Kiki Musampa hit the only goal for Louis van Gaal's hosts. • The lineups for that Amsterdam encounter on 20 March 1996 were: Ajax: Van der Sar, Silooy, F de Boer, Davids, Bogarde, Scholten, Litmanen (Landzaat 88), Musampa, Wooter, Kanu, R de Boer. Dortmund: Klos, Júlio César, Kohler, Kree, Wolters (Möller 61), Zorc, Freund, Tretschok (Reinhardt 63), Ricken, Chapuisat (Sosa 80), Riedle. Match background • Ajax are seeking their first back-to-back home wins in Europe since October/November 2008 following their 3-1 success against Manchester City FC on matchday three. Having taken four points off City, the Dutch title holders sit third in Group D and would move a point behind Dortmund with victory. • Having conceded late equalisers at City and Real Madrid CF, Dortmund are still seeking their first away win in the competition, qualifying included, since beating AC Milan at San Siro in March 2003. They have since drawn two and lost four. • Dortmund won 3-1 at PSV Eindhoven on their last visit to the Netherlands, for a UEFA Champions League first group stage fixture in October 2002. Jan Koller, Tomáš Rosický and Marcio Amoroso scored to earn a first victory against Dutch opponents at the sixth attempt; this season's defeat of Ajax was the second. Lars Ricken, now head of Dortmund's youth department, appeared in both that fixture and the 3-2 defeat by Feyenoord in the previous season's UEFA Cup final in Rotterdam. • Ajax lifted the 1986/87 European Cup Winners' Cup with a 1-0 victory over 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig in Athens. Team ties • De Boer also won two-legged ties as a player against FC Rot-Weiss Erfurt, 1. FC Kaiserslautern, FC Bayern München and VfL Bochum 1848. Including appearances for FC Barcelona against Hertha BSC Berlin and Bayer 04 Leverkusen, he lost just one match out of 12 against Bundesliga teams. • De Boer featured in the Netherlands' 3-1 win against Germany at EURO '92, and was captain in another 3-1 success in a Gelsenkirchen friendly in 2002. Germany's Sebastian Kehl came on at half-time as De Boer departed. • At UEFA EURO 2012 Mats Hummels appeared in Germany's 2-1 victories over the Netherlands and Denmark, who included Christian Eriksen and substitute Christian Poulsen. Hummels featured for a Germany Under-21 team that beat Lasse Schøne's Denmark 4-0 in 2008. • Hummels, Mario Götze and Marco Reus were substitutes in Germany's 3-0 friendly win against Ryan Babel's Netherlands in Hamburg in November 2011. • On 14 November Kenneth Vermeer made his international debut in Amsterdam as the Netherlands drew 0-0 with Germany, who included Hummels, Götze, Reus, İlkay Gündoğan and substitute Sven Bender. Ricardo van Rhijn started for the home team. • Götze's Germany beat ' Netherlands 2-1 to win the 2009 UEFA European U17 Championship title. • Kolbeinn Sigthórsson helped Iceland get the better of Germany in their 2011 UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifying group, scoring in a 2-2 away draw and, twice, in Iceland's 4-1 home victory. Julian Schieber scored in the first match and Kevin Grosskreutz in the second, Hummels and Marcel Schmelzer also playing. • Poulsen played in three derby wins against Dortmund with FC Schalke 04 between 2002 and 2006, losing only once. • Babel played for TSG 1899 Hoffenheim between January 2011 and August 2012, losing 3-1 at Dortmund in January.

AFC Ajax: Frank de Boer Date of birth: 15 May 1970 Nationality: Dutch Playing career: AFC Ajax, FC Barcelona, Galatasaray AŞ, Rangers FC, Al Rayyan SC, Al-Shamal SC Coaching career: AFC Ajax (youth), Netherlands (assistant), Ajax • Started out as a left-back but matured into a dominant centre-half at Ajax, where he came through the ranks along with his twin Ronald. Broke into the first team aged 18, winning the first of five Eredivisie titles in 1990. • Part of the team that lifted the 1992 UEFA Cup, he helped Ajax beat AC Milan in the UEFA Champions League final in Vienna three years later, adding the UEFA Super Cup and European/South American Cup later that year. Won the domestic double in 1997/98, his last full season with Ajax before moving to Barcelona with Ronald. A Liga title followed in 1999 and De Boer made over 150 appearances for the Catalan giants. • Moved to Galatasaray in summer 2003, signing for Rangers the following January. Hung up his boots in 2006 after a spell in Qatar, ending a career that brought 112 caps for the Netherlands. De Boer was in the Oranje side that reached the 1998 FIFA World Cup and UEFA EURO 2000 semi-finals, missing two penalties in a defeat by Italy in the latter. • Returned to Ajax as a youth coach in 2007 and the following year was appointed assistant to Bert van Marwijk with the senior national side, who reached the 2010 World Cup final. • In December 2010 he was installed as Ajax's caretaker coach following the departure of Martin Jol, good results subsequently earning him a three-and-a-half year deal as his first season in charge ended with the club's first league title since 2004. Helped the Amsterdam side retain the Eredivisie crown the following campaign.

Borussia Dortmund: Jürgen Klopp Date of birth: 16 June 1967 Nationality: German Playing career: SV Glatten, TuS Ergenzingen, 1. FC Pforzheim, Eintracht Frankfurt, Viktoria Sindlingen, Rot-Weiss Frankfurt, 1. FSV Mainz 05 Coaching career: 1. FSV Mainz 05, Borussia Dortmund • Having spent his early career in the lower leagues and failed to break into Eintracht's first team, Klopp turned professional with Mainz, starting off as a striker before becoming a no-nonsense defender. Never played in the top flight but made 325 second-division appearances from 1990 to 2001, setting a club record, as well as scoring 52 goals. • 'Kloppo', as he is known in Germany, was appointed Mainz's caretaker coach on 28 February 2001, helping the club avoid relegation to the third tier. • Duly won a permanent contract and over the next few years built Mainz into one of the strongest clubs in the 2. Bundesliga; narrowly missed out on promotion in 2002 and 2003, Mainz losing out to Eintracht by a single goal in the latter campaign. • Finally took Mainz into the top flight for the first time in 2004 and kept them in the Bundesliga until 2007, taking them into the 2005/06 UEFA Cup via the UEFA Fair Play ranking – they lost to eventual winners Sevilla FC in the first round. • After another near miss for promotion in 2007/08 Klopp – whose enthusiasm and passion, plus his stint as a TV pundit, have made him popular all over Germany – left for Dortmund. Took them to sixth in his first season, led them into the UEFA Europa League in the following campaign and then, with a squad packed with exciting young talent, oversaw league title wins in 2010/11 and 2011/12, adding the German Cup in the latter campaign.

UEFA Champions League: Did you know? • Holders Chelsea FC are hoping to avoid becoming the first defending champions to fail to get through a group stage since the UEFA Champions League began. (This record, like the others, includes the seasons between 1999/2000 and 2002/03 that featured a second group stage). In 1992/93, FC Barcelona were the reigning European Champion Clubs' Cup holders and lost 4-3 on aggregate in the second round by PFC CSKA Moskva. • No team has successfully defended the UEFA Champions League trophy with AC Milan (1989, 1990) the last club to win consecutive European Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), AFC Ajax (1995, 1996), Juventus (1996, 1997) and Manchester United FC (2008, 2009) have all returned to the UEFA Champions League final as holders only to lose. • S.S. Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta is the oldest player to compete in the UEFA Champions League having featured against Real Madrid CF on matchday six in 2007/08 aged 43 years and 252 days. Alessandro Costacurta is the oldest outfield player; the Milan defender was 40 years and 211 days when he played against AEK Athens FC in 2006/07. • Ryan Giggs is the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 37 years and 289 days, in Manchester United's 1-1 draw at SL Benfica on 14 September 2011. • Celestine Babayaro is the youngest player to have appeared; he was 16 years and 87 days when he started for RSC Anderlecht against FC Steaua Bucureşti on 23 November 1994. He was sent off in the 37th minute. • Peter Ofori-Quaye is the youngest player to have scored in the UEFA Champions League, aged 17 years and 195 days. He found the net in Olympiacos FC's 5-1 defeat at Rosenborg BK on 1 October 1997. • Lionel Messi became the first player to score five goals in a match in Barcelona's 7-1 win against Bayer 04 Leverkusen on 7 March 2012. Eight players, including Messi, have scored four times in a game, most recently FC Bayern München's Mario Gomez on matchday eight last season. • Before this season Barcelona had finished as group winners on 13 occasions, one more than Manchester United and Real Madrid. • Barcelona hold the record for successive wins in the UEFA Champions League proper with nine, between 18 September 2002 and 18 February 2003. RSC Anderlecht's 12 straight defeats (10 December 2003 to 23 November 2005) is also a competition record. • Five teams have recorded six successive victories in a UEFA Champions League group stage: Milan (1992/93), Paris Saint-Germain FC (1994/95), FC Spartak Moskva (1995/96), Barcelona (2002/03, first group stage) and Real Madrid (2011/12). • Fifteen teams have gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without picking up a single point, including Villarreal CF, FC Oţelul Galaţi and GNK Dinamo Zagreb in 2011/12. • Barcelona scored 20 goals in the 2011/12 group stage, equalling Manchester United's competition record from 1998/99. Barcelona scored 19 times in the 1999/2000 first group stage, a tally matched by Real Madrid last season. • Only RC Deportivo La Coruña (2004/05) and Maccabi Haifa FC (2009/10) have failed to score in a group stage. • Dinamo Zagreb conceded 22 goals in the 2011/12 group stage, a new record. The previous highest total was 19, shared by MŠK Žilina (2010/11), Debreceni VSC (2009/10), FC Dynamo Kyiv (2007/08) and Ferencvárosi TC (1995/96). • No team has ever gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without conceding a goal. Milan (1992/93), Ajax (1995/96), Juventus (1996/97 and 2004/05), Chelsea (2005/06), Liverpool FC (2005/06), Villarreal (2005/06) and Manchester United (2010/11) all let in just one. • Before their 3-1 win against Sporting Clube de Portugal on matchday six of the 2006/07 campaign, Spartak Moskva went 22 games without a victory in the competition. • The lowest total for a team qualifying from the group stage is seven points. The first to do it since three points for a win was introduced in 1995/96 were Legia Warszawa that same season before Dynamo Kyiv managed it in 1999/2000 and Liverpool in 2001/02. FC Lokomotiv Moskva and eventual finalists Juventus both progressed with seven points in 2002/03, as did Rangers FC and SV Werder Bremen in 2005/06. • Only two teams have ever won the UEFA Champions League on home soil: Borussia Dortmund (1997, final in Munich) and Juventus (1996, final in Rome), while Manchester United lost the 2011 final in London and 12 months later Bayern were beaten in the showpiece in their own stadium, the Fußball Arena München.
