Senior women are incapable of reproduction, mastering their bodies, or arousing sexual desire in themselves or others. The senior actresses’ I explore in the case studies below insert their performances of self and their everyday lives into the large and complicated discourse of sex, producing a counter-narrative to sexually inactive senior women. Their performances actively embody their sexuality outside the frame of a character. This thesis examines how senior actresses’ performances of sexuality extend a discourse of sexuality imposed on older woman by mass media. These women are the public face of senior women’s sexual agency.

This movie was picked as best picture, and Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster were selected as best actor and best actress for their roles as the leads in Silence of the Lambs. The public was asked who should win the Oscar only from these three categories, and its choices are definitely reflective of the popularity of the movies nominated. "Silence of the Lambs was picked by 28 percent of the public, closely followed by "Beauty and the Beast" at 24 percent. These were the only two movies which were nominated for best picture that were also among the top fifteen box office draws in 1991. Rounding off the rest of the list of the public's preferred choices for best picture are l1JE'Ku1at 18 percent, "Prince of Tides1' picked by 9 percent, and "Bugsyl' chosen by 4 percent. Among the five actors nominated for best actor Anthony Hopkins wins 28 percent of the public's support. Content analysis of these films suggests that film por- trayals of midlife women’s sexuality are relatively muted, with the most positive portrayals found in the broadest comedies. In addition, midlife women’s bodies are more often displayed as objects of humor than as objects of desire, the ‘‘female gaze’’ at the male body is shown only humorously, and midlife women’s sexuality is primarily validated for slim, white, middle-class women in committed romantic relationships with ‘‘age-appropriate’’ partners. Nevertheless, these films suggest that midlife women should have sexual desires, should act on those desires, should experience sexual pleasure, and should not sacrifice their sexual needs for a man’s approval. Keywords Women Á Midlife Á Aging Á Film Introduction In 2006, the oldest of the 78 million U.S. baby boomers turned 60 while the youngest (typically defined as those born in 1964) moved toward their mid-40s. Not coincidentally, a spate of popular articles and books appeared arguing that midlife sexuality was blossoming. These included Dr. Ruth’s Sex After 50, Gail Sheehy’s Sex and the Seasoned Woman, and the February 20, 2006 Newsweek cover story on ‘‘Sex and the Single Boomer: The New World of Midlife Romance.’’ As evidence of this cultural shift, more than one author cited Diane Keaton’s brief nude scene as Jack Nicholson’s lover in Something’s Gotta Give or the R.
