Senior women are incapable of reproduction, mastering their bodies, or arousing sexual desire in themselves or others. The senior actresses’ I explore in the case studies below insert their performances of self and their everyday lives into the large and complicated discourse of sex, producing a counter-narrative to sexually inactive senior women. Their performances actively embody their sexuality outside the frame of a character. This thesis examines how senior actresses’ performances of sexuality extend a discourse of sexuality imposed on older woman by mass media. These women are the public face of senior women’s sexual agency.

Films studied include It Happened One Night, Bringing Up Baby, The Awful Truth, and The Lady Eve. Thematic as well as technical elements will be analyzed. Actors include Katharine Hepburn, Cary Grant, Clark Gable, and Barbara Stanwyck. Class involves lectures, discussions, written analysis, and in-class screenings. COURSE OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this course is to analyze and inform students about the screwball comedy genre. By the end of the semester, students should have: 1. An understanding of the basic elements of screwball comedies including important elements expressed cinematically in illustrative selections from noteworthy screwball comedy directors. 2. An ability to analyze music and sound, editing (montage), performance, camera movement and angle, composition (mise-en-scene), screenwriting and directing and to understand how these technical elements contribute to the screwball comedy film under scrutiny. 3. An ability to apply various approaches to comic film analysis, including consideration of aesthetic elements, sociocultural critiques, and psychoanalytic methodology. 4. An understanding of diverse directorial styles and the effect upon the viewer. 5. Your safety is our first priority and we encourage you to call us with any questions about our reopening guidelines. We will not be serving coffee or congregate lunches until further notice. All activities with be limited to 10 people or less and preregistration is required for every program. Masks are required for all participants. As we begin this first phase of reopening, our hours will be reduced to implement sanitizing procedures. New Senior Center hours starting Monday, October 19th will be: Monday/Tuesday/Friday from 9:00am-3:00pm. Flu Vaccine Clinic Marc’s Pharmacy will be administering high-dose flu vaccines on Thursday, October 22nd from 10:00am-1:00pm. Appointments are required. Please arrive no more than 5 minutes before your scheduled time and don’t forget your Medicare card! Silver Sneakers We will offer Silver Sneakers exercise classes Mondays at 10:30 am and Fridays at 12:00 pm. Class size is limited to 10 people or less. Preregistration is required. If this is the case, then why do women watch these films? The repetition of female stars like Katharine Hepburn, Doris Day and Meg Ryan in romantic comedies allows audiences to find elements of truth in their characters as they grapple with the input of others in their life choices, combat the anxiety of being single, and prove they are less sexually naïve than society would like to admit.

Fast forward to today and the explosion of technology and content that is changing our lives and keeping journalists busy across the globe. Entertainment journalism has changed as well, with all of us taking a much harder look at how societal issues influence Hollywood, from workplace equality and diversity to coverage of political events, the impact of social media and U.S.-China rela- tions. Your Press Club has thrived amid all this. Participation is way up, with more Chris Palmeri than 600 dues-paying members. The National Arts & Entertainment Journalism Awards have grown and changed as well. Tonight we’re in a ballroom in the Millennium Biltmore Hotel, but in 2008 the awards took place in the Steve Allen Theater, the Press Club’s old home in East Hollywood. That building has since been torn down. Our first event in 2008 featured a cocktail party with no host and only 111 entries in the competition.
