U.S. DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration NATIONAL MARINE FISHERIES SERVICE/NOAA FISHERIES Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center 2570 Dole St. • Honolulu, Hawaii 96822-2396 (808) 983-5300 • Fax: (808) 983-2902 CRUISE REPORT1 VESSEL: Oscar Elton Sette, Cruise 03-07 (OES-08) PERIOD: 19 August – 30 September 2003 AREA OF OPERATION: Commonwealth of the Mariana Islands and Guam TYPE OF OPERATION: Personnel from the Coral Reef Ecosystem Division, Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center, National Marine Fisheries Service, NOAA, and partner agencies conducted reef ecosystem assessment/monitoring in waters surrounding the Commonwealth of the Mariana Islands and Guam. This Mariana Archipelago Reef Assessment and Monitoring Program (MARAMP) cruise is part of NOAA’s Coral Reef Conservation Program (CRCP) to conduct biennial coral reef ecosystem monitoring at each of the U.S.-affiliated Pacific Islands. ITINERARY: 19 Aug Deployed Coral Reef Early Warning System (CREWS) buoy in Managaha Reserve in Saipan Lagoon. 20-21 Aug Conducted shipboard orientation, dive safety management drills, and fire and abandon ship drills. Conducted fish and benthic Rapid Ecological Assessment (REA) team and towed-diver protocol training dives off leeward Saipan. 22 Aug Departed Saipan Harbor to begin cruise. Conducted six towed-diver habitat/fish surveys, two towed snorkeler turtle surveys, three benthic and two fish REA surveys along the north and east sides of Saipan. Conducted 20 shallow water conductivity-temperature- depth (CTD) casts around Saipan. Deployed settlement plates around anchor for CREWS buoy. Conducted two Tethered Optical Assessment Device (TOAD) camera drop surveys, four acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) transects, and four deepwater (500 m) CTDs around Saipan. -

Commercial fishing industries have expanded and optimized resource extraction but have often times exceeded sustainable levels of harvest. In the Pacific Northwestern United States, the commercial fishing industry is one of particular economic and cultural importance. Due to reduced yield of many native fish stocks, marine reserves have been implemented in Oregon’s nearshore waters in an effort to conserve biodiversity. -

Overview On December 18-19, 2018 the Phoenix Island Protected Area (PIPA) Trust, the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, and the Aquarium of the Pacific co- convened a workshop on Super Corals at the Aquarium of the Pacific. The working definition of Super Corals for the workshop was that Super Corals are coral holobionts that have demonstrated the ability to tolerate or to recover from stress better than the population average, and to successfully reproduce post-stress. We use the term “resilient” to include both the ability to resist stress and to recover from it. Corals that cope with climate-change induced stressors, including ocean warming and acidification, are termed “climate-resilient”. -

McMullen, Fishery Biologist Alaska Department of Fish and Game Division of Commercial Fisheries Research Section Kodiak, Alaska INTRODUCTION King crabs (Paralithodes camtschatica) are creatures of the North Pacific and Bering Sea. Adults breed annually in water depths less than 40 fathoms (Marukawa , 1933; Powell, 1964) . King crabs commonly molt and breed in the bays of the Kodiak Island group as described by Wallace, et al. , (1949) and Powell and Reynolds (19 65). More recently, McMullen (1967) found king crabs molting and breeding in an open ocean environment. Domestic and foreign fleets fish the Kodiak continental shelf year- round. King crabs have been fished during the breeding month of April, except as regulated by emergency closure. A major portion of Portlock Bank, a known ocean breeding location, has not been subject to regulatory closure which may have resulted in the selective harvest of brood males during pa st years . The Kodiak king crab fishery has rapidly increased in value the past years. -

This report explains results from one human dimension investigative project being used to support ODFW's responsibilities to establish and monitor Oregon's system of marine reserve sites (MR's). A more thorough description of each of the studies and data collection projects for assessing human dimensions can be found in the Oregon Marine Reserves portal at the Oregon Ocean Information website: http://oregonocean.info/. This project's interim results were used by marine reserve community teams that were providing input on site design and management following passage of SB 1510 in 2012 which approved the addition of three marine reserves to the two pilot sites authorized by HB 3013 in 2009.
