Born to a small rural town in Georgia, Macon to be exact, Norm Nixon began his life filled with the same curiosity, leadership and tenacity he carries with him to this day. Long before he became the Two Time NBA champion receiving great accolades, notoriety and forever making him a writ- ten part of history, he was a small town kid, growing up in the South, with all the Southern ways that came with it in the 1960’s. He was his mom’s sweetest, an usher at their church, played the trumpet and was class president, and of course a star athlete. Excelling in football, basketball and track, Norm was heavily recruited out of high school. Torn as to which sport to pursue, at only 6’2”, he de- cided to follow his dream to college and accepted his basketball scholarship. This moved him out of the South, and up North to Pennsylvania, to , the program best known for break- ing racial boundaries and for spending more time in the AP Top 10 then any other Atlantic 10 school. In 1977, after capturing the conference title and receiving player of the year honors, Norm was draft- ed to the NBA. Norm graduated with a degree in Science with a focus on mathematics. His accom- plishments haunt the university. He still holds the Duquesne Men’s Basketball records for: field goals made in a career, assists in a season, assists per game in a season, assists in a career and as- sists per game in a career, 30 years later and retired jersey #10, hanging from the gym rafters. Norm was drafted 22nd in the 1st round by the . His acquisition coincided with the beginning of the Jerry Buss era, as Jerry purchased the team in 1979. These were the foundation years for the Lakers Dy- nasty. Norm was named to the NBA Rookie team and by his third season in the league (1980) had earned his first championship ring. Along with the NBA title Norm also led the league in minutes played and steals. He received his second ring and All-Star selection in 1982 and followed that with a second All-Star appearance in 1985. A statistic which bears relevance on a person’s talent, tenacity, strength and mental fortitude is the minutes played and games played. Norm holds down both statistics. In his first nine seasons Norm played 715 of 725 games. These types of numbers mean your program relies on you, you play through injury and illness and even through adversarial situations, the coach knows this is the player who is imperative to being on the court at all times.

6 Photography by Curtis Williams 7 Norm Nixon spent 6 seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers, never missing a post-season appearance and 13 seasons in total with the NBA before retiring from the San Diego Clip- pers in 1989. He has become part of the nostalgia and greatness of the NBA. He played with and against some of the most well-known and beloved players of all-time; Pistol Pete Marovich, , Kareem Abdul Jabaar, , Larry Bird, Moses Malone, Bill Lambeer, Kevin McHale, James Worthy, Patrick Ewing, Bob McAdoo, Rudy Tomjonovich, Paul Westphal, Bill Walton, Hakeem Olajuwan, Robert Parrish, Danny Ainge, Charles Barkley, Isaiah Thomas, Michael Jordan and the list goes on and on. The Lakers were established in 1948, since then the team has only missed the NBA playoffs five times. The team has 16 NBA titles and has appeared in the NBA Finals 15 other times and Norm Nixon is still considered by many, one of the top 10 Los Angeles Lakers draft picks of All-Time. And just like what happens to all of us, while your not looking, life happens. In the middle of a phenomenal NBA career, he found four more blessings, a loving and most-talented wife and three beautiful children. an actress, dancer, choreographer, television director, television producer, and a member of the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities and Norm made for very much a Hollywood power couple. In addition to a thriving basketball career, Norm had taken his thirst for knowledge and love of numbers and began another successful career in real estate speculation. Owning and manag- ing properties up and down the West coast and all the way back to his birthplace in Georgia. But you’d think between the two of them and their young children, their hands would be full. Norm managed to also find time to establish a successful management agency, managing major profes- sional athletes and celebrity entertainers from and Peter Warrick to LL Cool J and TLC. Their legacy goes on and grows. In 2001 Norm and Debbie established the world renowned Deb- bie Allen Dance Academy (DADA) in Culver City, California, teaching approximately 200 children from ages 4-18 dance. It also reaches out to children who would not normally have the opportu- nity to participate due to financial constraints. 80% of the children at the academy are on schol- arship. The latest show being produced at the academy is the “Hot Chocolate Nutcracker.” You also can find many of the former students on Broadway and throughout the entertainment com- munity. Obviously when they say you shouldn’t take work home with you, Norm and Debbie just were not listening. Norm said he learned long ago, even when disagreements occur, as they al- ways will in work, no one sleeps on the couch. When asked what he’s learned from his most-tal- ented wife Debbie, he said “She’s a finisher, she pushes things through and makes things happen.”

8 Photography by Curtis Williams 9 www.blackbarbershop.org

10 11 In his spare time, Norm also does commentary for the Lakers games on Fox. He’s known for his spirited games of HORSE with many of the Lakers players. He might even be seen beating a few of these young guys. He also keeps busy by offering basketball day camps for children. There is also a special outreach which is near and dear to his heart, the Black Barbershop Outreach Program. As the official spokesman for The Black Barbershop Outreach Program, Norm is keenly interested in educating and bringing to light the issues the program is trying to alleviate. The program provides out- reach to African-American men by providing free testing for diabetes, high blood pressure, cholesterol and other health analysis at participating barbershops. Currently African American men have the highest incidence of death from preventable disease. The program operates to educate and foster a belief in incor- porating a health care philosophy into their daily lives to avoid preventable illness and death. As men are known for their ability to congregate, whether it’s at the gym, the car wash, the sports bar, etc., the place historically known to be a place for socialization and time passing for African American men has been the barbershop. The Black Barbershop Health Outreach Program has a goal to screen over 500,000 African American men for diabetes and hypertension by the year 2012. Currently, the program is well under- way to capturing this goal; it has reached 20,000 men in 25 cities through 300 participating barbershops. Lastly, sitting in his beautiful Santa Monica house with the sun streaming in warming the Span- ish kitchen tile, you can’t help but notice all the beautifully framed pictures indicative of some proud parents. DeVaughn the oldest son began his acting career at 9, in the Kevin Costner film “The Body- guard”. He has been in numerous other TV and Film projects and is currently working on the Disney movie “Prom” set to hit theaters Spring 2011. As he picks up one picture, his features soften and you can see the curiosity it is of the special love of a dad for his daughter. Norm’s only daughter Vivian, is a dancer and she’s on Broadway. Working on her third Broadway production “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown”, she was also a cast member of the critically acclaimed productions Memphis and Hotfeet. Vivian is also, of course, a former student of the Debbie Allen Dance Academy. His young- est, Norm Jr., is beginning his senior year at Southern University in Baton Rouge Louisiana with the aspirations of becoming a lawyer. When asked what he hopes that he taught his kids that they carry with them throughout life, Norm said, “Respect. And to be good people. That’s all, that’s what’s important.”

22 23 24 25 John Kalamaras: The Legend by CARMEN CHAFFIN

John Kalamaras’s paintings have been described as having a mystical quality, and a timeless appeal. His technique and use of light is compelling without being pretentious. His paintings are surrealistic and jour- neys into the world of light and shadows. Born in Vallejo, California during the depression, John was raised in a completely Greek environment, al- lowed to speak Greek only. He entered the first grade without knowing any English. Despite the difficulties he encountered, he proved to be an outstanding scholar and athlete. He graduated from the University of California at Berkeley, earning a Master’s degree in art and the other in psychology. John continued his studies in Paris at Les Escoles Superieures des Beaux Arts where he studied engraving and etching under the guidance of Dr. Jean Bersier. He spent most of the 60’s exhibiting in Europe, but the greatest influence was during his stay in Greece. During the course of our interview, John being the gracious host that he is, offered a tour of the main house where large scale paintings in vibrant colors hung, bringing life to each wall. A magnificent chandelier that was elegantly hand carved out of tin speckled the room with soft light. John’s sacred Tin Gods stood in a corner as protectors of the house. As we continued to the outdoor patio garden, a stunning piece solely hung as if to command its own spot… The Crown of Thorns, a recent powerful piece constructed of an assortment of nails and screws finished in a gold tone. No words needed to be spoken. No explanation was needed. It told its own story to the heart. Painting and exhibiting throughout Paris, Italy, Greece, Canada and the United States, John brought to life Berthe, a beautiful lady engulfed in vivid spheres surrounding her, and Elani, the serene face of a butterfly. In the 1990’s John introduced The Byzantine Chorale with Totems. These exquisite sculptures display intri- cate detailed carvings all etched by hand. John’s paintings are collected and enjoyed by, Barbra Streisand, Steve Martin, Arthur Miller, and many oth- ers. When talking about upcoming endeavors, John shared that he wishes to continue in creating pieces that in- tegrate light and shadows. The art of John Kalamaras captures ones attention by reminding us of what we see in light, what we see in our dreams, and what we are inspired by. His art is not only to be viewed, but is an experience and journey into our imagination.

32 33 Phillip Prince by CARMEN CHAFFIN Phillip Prince, perhaps better known as the Prince of Silk, is the founder of Silktex Fashion, an apparel design company that specializes in quality silk fashion. He is a graduate of the New York Fashion Institute of Technology, and has a degree in both business adminis- tration and Advertising from Roosevelt University in Chicago. Phillip confesses that his affinity to fashion started in high school, but didn’t know how to sew. Instead, he would hand paint on leather and his flamboyant style was an instant hit when Bianca Jagger asked if he would design for Mick.

Phillip has been involved in fashion since the 1960’s and has outfitted super stars such as; Jimmy Hendrix, Mick Jagger, Alice Cooper, Janis Joplin and many others. The world famous Tuxedo Shirt was worn by the Beatles at the 1976 Academy Awards and sold over 20 million the first year. The Phillip fever continued and he has since enjoyed celebrity designer status designing fashion for Cher, Mari- ah Carey, Toni Braxton, Smokey Robinson, Snoop Dogg and others.

Phillip currently has four collections of elaborate Fresco designs; Roman, Americas, Asian, and Contemporary, which is artwork depicted on clothing, well deserving to be described as, “living art.” The detailing and authenticity that Phillip captures on the silk fabrics expresses the epitome of quality, care, and a unique creation by a master. His use of art, patterns, and colors with a dose of a cool vibe, makes his style and designs come to life with an energy you can feel.

Phillip has refined his niche to include a line dedicated to auto racing appropriately named, Speed City Fashion and is actively involved in racing cars himself. The Silk Fashion Collection takes into consideration the every- day life style of the confident and successful working executive, while the Silktex Luxury Collection caters to women with discerning taste and style.

“It’s very hard to make a decision to veer off the path that all your peers seem to be following. To decide at that time in your life that you want to study acting as opposed to going off to university with everyone else is a little terrifying, and at the time I graduated it was too drastic a decision for me to make. Natural Beauty

California is known for its’ infinite natural beauty, including the people who live here.

The Beach Boys said it best with their hit song California Girls that declared, “I wish they all could be California Girls.”

Melrose Heights is happy to present one of the many beauties that live in the Melrose Heights area. Californian grown Blanca Sanchez, shared with us a glimpse of who she is and how she enjoys the Californian lifestyle.

No need to dwell upon all of the stress that a top notch busy assistant manager can accumulate during the course of a busy day at the ever popular El Carmen Restaurant in Los Angeles. Blanca makes sure your experience is a great one.

So how does she shake off a week’s worth of managing? She expressed her affinity for hiking in the hills of Silver Lake and spending quality time with her friends and family. Simply, going to a movie, or just spending time hanging out with her favorite peeps is enjoyment enough. Waking up and looking out a window at all of the opportunities that California has to offer, she gives thanks for what she sees’ in front of her…another day. Her genuine and candid approach to life and the appreciation for it has strengthened her to face adversities. With a degree in Psychology, Blanca expressed her desire to reach a personal goal of giving back to society, by giving her time to an organization that she feels passionate about.

Blanca has a depth to her that exudes confidence and assuredness. Her enjoyments are simple. What makes Blanca a Melrose Heights Beauty? Her inner Self.

Lauren Bacall, Audrey Hepburn, Jackie Kennedy to name a few, would proudly attire themselves in the collection of Eva Mejl. Reminiscent of a time when women dressed up whether they were going out for a romantic evening dinner, or merely to the store, Eva captures the essence of the sophisticated and respectable lady. From her cocktail dresses to casual wear, Eva’s designs are finished with exquisite detailing. Incorporating the unexpected, whether it’s a crystal bead draping down to the low of the back, or an edgy zipper running the length of a sleeve, one can always expect quality and an essence of timelessness. Eva has captured a sensual appeal in her designs, utilizing a color palette of soft and feminine shades of pale blue, lilac, and warm bronze. Her collection of casual wear is energy packed with reds, lively greens and yellow.

Photography by Curtis Williams

48 49 The desire to create designs started at the early age for Eva. Her grandmother bought her a sewing machine as a birthday gift when she turned eight years old. The young artist began her dream by sewing clothes for her dolls, using materials from Eva’s mother’s dresses.

In school, Eva was recognized for her advanced skills in fashion design and later moved to Paris to further her education. After years of commitment and hard work, she had the opportunity to debut her first collection. Success- fully gaining the respect and recognition from fashion critics, Eva’s line was picked up by a boutique in London. Her following and popularity as designer grew.

50 Photography by Curtis Williams 51 Even with the remarkable accomplishments and triumphs Eva achieved, she finally realized another dream, when she came to the United which can be found in select boutiques in States and produced her line. It was in 2008 Los Angeles and Beverly Hills. when she released her first collection. Eva continues to produce an exquisite line 52 Photography by Curtis Williams53 Svetlana Bagdasaryan

Professional artists spend years to obtain their degree. Svetlana Bagdasaryan woke up one sunny morning to the sounds of her German Shepherd grumbling in his dream, took a brush, and in one year created 60 paintings. Born in the family of a physics professor and doctor, with both her elder brother and sister pursuing their degree in physics, Svetlana did not really con- sider any other option than science when it came to choosing her profession. Was it a calling? She is not so certain about it now. But nonetheless, she spent five years to get her masters in physics, and in another eight made her PhD in chemistry. She worked as a research scientist in the Institute of Applied Problems of Physics in Erevan, Armenia, shaking dimethyltryptamine cocktails and making puzzles of free radicals in catalyst reactions. However, what happened a year ago totally changed Svetlana’s life and her love for catalyst reactions.

portrait 1

54 55 Svetlana rushed into the house from her backyard to pick up the phone, and bumped into the transparent sliding doors. Doctors say it was a brain concussion. Svetlana calls it a “momentous accident.” Whatever it was, it caused her lost vision for a couple of hours and a constant buzz and chirping in her ears for a couple of months. But what is more significant, when Svetlana gained all her senses back, she realized she had no remembrance of anything in physics or chemis- try at all. It was a matter of a couple of days before she painted her first picture. Dr. Bagdasaryan says she had no clue as to how to hold a brush before the accident. She remembers her first pictures were drawn with a shaking hand. Every new painting awed her to the conviction that she would not be able to do anything better. “I often think that it is not me who is painting. I could never in my life believe I could take a brush and draw something like that. I still can’t really believe it,” she says. But despite all fears, Svetlana is just not able not to give in to a strong drive to paint. She is totally and constantly into it. “I go to bed trying to figure out what I can paint next. I wake up in the morning, and the first thing that comes into my mind is again oils and canvas.” Svetlana says everything can inspire her, and there are a lot of things that do! Her progress resembles an avalanche. She can paint four, five paintings a week. Once she starts she just cannot stop. “What I like about painting most is all the different ways I can interpret reality,” Svetlana says. And indeed, only a few of her pictures could be characterized as realistic. They are rather a colorful and variegated expression of her feelings about reality. “I am not afraid of making a mistake and I am trying to learn things all the time, but there is something inside me, you can call it an intuition, something that tells me what will work.” www.artcbeta.com

82 83 MELROSE HEIGHTS ART AND ARTISTS Craig Wilcox Artist by Dorothy Walters Wilcox

“I’m fascinated with the history of illumination as an art. It began in Roman times and developed into an intricate and delicate art form, practiced largely by religious orders through the 15th century and the invention of the printing press.” Craig Wilcox spends eight to ten hours a day in his scriptorium grinding pigments, mixing unique paints, preparing vellum to receive 24 karat gold leaf. It is then laid, burnished and a fixative applied. He has developed a personal style of calligraphy which is also decorative. Living and spending extended periods of time in Europe and the Middle East since he was twelve years old, Craig has been exposed to numerous cultures and internalized their art forms from medieval times to the present. Ancient symbols often appear in his work as well as his own whimsical forms and creatures. Mr. Wilcox is an accomplished watercolorist having studied extensively with Patsy O’Connell in Washington State.

An illuminated manuscript is a manuscript in which the text is supplemented by the addition of decoration, such as decorated initials, borders and miniature illustrations. In the strictest definition of the term, an illuminated manuscript only refers to manuscripts decorated with gold or silver, but in both common usage and modern scholarship, the term is now used to refer to any decorated or illustrated manuscript from the Western traditions. Comparable Far Eastern works are always described This illuminated manuscript is of Saint Luke, 14” X14”, gouache and ink with 24 karat gold on vellum. as painted, as are Mesoamerican works. Islamic manuscripts are usually referred to as illuminated but can also be classified as painted. The earliest surviving substantive illuminated manuscripts are from the period AD 400 to 600 (also in the gothic period), primarily produced in Ireland, Constantinople and Italy. The significance of these works It is an example of 11th Century technique, perspective and style. Craig is currently working on a retrospective of lies not only in their inherent art history value, but in the maintenance of a link of literacy offered by non- painting techniques used in each century from the year 1000 to the present keeping true to as many of the medieval illuminated texts as well. Had it not been for the monastic scribes of Late Antiquity, the entire literature artistic traditions as possible. By grinding and mixing his own pigments he can recreate the colors used in each time of Greece and Rome would have perished; as it was, the patterns of textual survivals were shaped by their period. usefulness to the severely constricted literate group of Christians.

84 85 A Life of Karma: A Restaurant Story

Electric Karma is one of those very few places where “old meets new” actually works.

The restaurant you enter into is deeply Indian inspired, but is not overdone. Instead it feels like you’ve walked into a fairytale world belonging to another culture, neither here nor there but something altogether unique. It’s the only place that I know of where a big screen projecting Bollywood music videos not only feels completely natural, but also intimately romantic.

Most popular on the menu is the Nirvana Chicken, which consists of a coconut masala with chili. From the kitchen of Electric Karma with love. By: Kate Ascott-Evans

by Susan Ayers I’m sitting at “The Banana Leaf”, a family owned, Singaporean style restaurant in the very famous “Farmer’s

Market”. I’m watching a constant flow of varied and

heterogeneous people being served by a very friendly and

energetic young man behind the counter. His name is

Michael Gazal. He seems to be the counter person, busboy,

waiter and as I’m about to find out ,.....the proprietor of the

Banana Leaf. Michael looks more like he should be playing

in a Rock band as he finds a moment to sit down and talk

with us. He says “in the 8 yrs. we’ve been open, I’ve watched

Singaporean restaurants open and close. I think what makes

us different and successful is that we decided to do what we

know. This is the food of Singapore I grew up with. Blending

Indian, Indonesian and Malaysian cuisine but in a way that

they would be prepared in Singapore. We’re different.... we’re

“Home Style”.

That evening we tasted Rojak Salad. This dish is a cornucopia

of fresh fruits, vegetables and fried tofu, served in a spicy

peanut-tamarind sauce. I should add at this time that they

are happy to adjust the spiciness to your taste. In my case the

spicier the better so...... bring it on!!!

This is a dish slowly cooked in coconut milk with spices such as ginger and chili. OMG.... Loved this one, and the Mee Goreng, an Indian panfried noodle served fresh and hot from the kitchen, was the perfect dish to bring it all together. Michael said we must try the “Chendol” a dessert made from palm sugar, coconut, crushed ice and chendol bean. I loved this little court side restaurant with everything served on a banana leaf, giving off smells of far away places and exotic spices, but most of all I loved when Michael said “food like art is an expression of the person who makes it” When someone says something like that you know the food is going to be good!!!!

Kaitlyn, Model / Actress up coming Cover Girl 98 99 Scandinavian Film Festival L.A. (SFFLA) rounded off a dozen years at the Writ- ers Guild Theater in Beverly Hills this past Jan 8, 9, 15, 16, screening twenty three films including Nordic Oscar submissions, additional feature films, shorts, and documentaries. “It’s hard to believe!” says festival Founder/Director James Koenig. “I told myself (like I’m always telling my singing students) ‘Easy-- take a breath!’ It’s the day after. It was a great success.’” With a growing audience of more than 4500 over the two week-end run of the festival, it can certainly claim to have carved out its “niche” on the L.A. film scene with it’s annual winter residency of Nordic film in Southern California. A diverse audience includes a wide age range of film lovers, industry professionals, and home-sick Nordics. In the past twelve years the festival has screened 181 films from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. There have been thirteen Oscar nominations and three Oscars. “It is like music.” says Koenig. “I especially like films that make heartstrings reverberate and that leave audiences appreciating our common humanity. We have audiences mingling with directors, producers, leading actors. But my real joy is to bring people together to share the stories that make us cry, or cringe, and laugh, and love, and survive-- or at least try.” Work is already in process on next year’s festival. “Call me crazy!” comments a relieved festival director. “Or call me if you know a potential donor!” In the meanwhile, Koenig returns to his other world of classical music-- singing and and teaching singers. He’ll trade subtitles for the supertitles and translations of classical music-- opera, and song texts, and trade screenplays for libretti. The lucky 13th edition of SFFLA is already on the horizon! Major supporters of the festival include the American Scandinavian Foundation of Los Angeles, ELMA, SWEA, and the Barbro Osher Pro Suecia Foun- dation. 110 111111 Mr. Cigar is Back Taz Ahmadi on the progression of the cigar industry by Deidra Burtonelli

Returning to interview with Melrose Heights is Taz Ahmadi, “Mr. Cigar”, himself. Taz is co-owner with his brothers, of The V-Cut Smoke Shop, located on Melrose. The shop has been in business for thirteen years and Taz has been a witness to the evolution of the cigar industry. Taz has yet a new café to accommodate the successful smoke shop, just two doors down, The V Café. The V Café will feature their espresso bar and serve lunch specials with produce from local California markets. The doors to the café will be open in February. Taz is looking forward to serving the neighborhood that has supported The V-Cut throughout its sustainable run. Cigars range in brand and regional export. According to Taz, depending on the manufacturer, a cigar can consist of tobacco from up to five different countries. The V-Cut carries both commercial and boutique lines of cigars from Nicaragua, Cuba, Honduras, North Africa, Indonesia, and others across the globe. Taz prefers to carry smaller, boutique cigar brands, in the shop, for the consistence in quality and flavor.

“What I’ve noticed over the last five years, and liked, is that it’s a bit of a renaissance with the product boutique lines are putting out.” says Taz, “People want quality”. According to Taz, now, more than ever, smaller cigar brands tend to the demands of its cigar patrons. The concerns people who know cigars, have is for the consistency and craftsmanship of large brands.

The V-Cut procured its name from the option of having the edge of the cigar cut. With a tool called a v-cutter, slicing the edge of the cigar in the shape of a V, can alter the concentration coming from the tobacco’s blend.

Visitors of the smoke shop are not limited to business men. Couples, executives, and people from all walks of life come to reflect on their day and enjoy the leisure of a relaxed environment. Taz believes that the today there is no average cigar smoker. Smoking cigars is a lifestyle. Around the time Christopher Columbus set sail to the Caribbean, cigars were used by Indian shamans during medicinal ceremonies as a means to heal the sick. When tobacco was shipped to America in the early 1500s, it was chocolate and cigars that became a class symbol for the wealthy. Cigarettes V- were made from the leftover tobacco and to avail of the common folk. CUT Just like any other plant, the region in which it is grown affects the texture and taste of the cigar. Cuba is well known for its cigars because of the body and taste that comes from the minerals that are developed in Cuban rich soil. Dominican cigars are the top produces of cigars, worldwide. Good blends for new cigar smokers to try are form Honduras, where they have a robust tobacco is grown for a mild ingestion. Nicaragua is popular for their cigars and top quality acclaimed by critics. Those who have a deep understanding of cigars don’t buy into honing one type over the rest. V- V- Taz refers to the stereotype of Cuban cigars held in its high regard, “To say that one country’s blend CUT CUT is better than the next, is like saying that French wine is the best wine”. -D.B.
