Two new species of Mesochria from Fiji are described and illustrated: M. schlingeri Thompson, n. sp. and M. vulgaris Thompson, n. sp. A key to genera of Aniso- podidae and key to the species of Mesochria species are provided, along with notes on the classification of the family. INTRODUCTION Wood gnats (family Anisopodidae) are common flies in forests as their name implies (Sylvicola Harris, the type genus, means “lover of woods” in Latin). They are found on all continents except Antarctica and on most major islands (Indonesia, Madagascar, New Zealand, Philippines, West Indies), but are less numerous on smaller, “oceanic” islands, with species only being recorded from the Canaries, Lord Howe, Maderia, New Cale- donia, Samoa, Seychelles, and now Fiji. One species has been introduced into the Hawai- ian Islands (Thompson & Rogers 1992). In the Pacific, only the genera Sylvicola (intro- duced into Hawai‘i, otherwise in Australia and New Zealand), Mycetobia Meigen (New Caledonia) and Mesochria Enderlein (Samoa, Fiji) occur. Only 10 specimens of Mesochria representing 9 species have been reported since the group was described about a hundred years ago. In the first years of the current Fiji bio- logical survey, 73 specimens representing two new species were collected. -

S. de Medeiros1 & Cassandra G. Extavour1,2* Over the course of evolution, organism size has diversified markedly. Changes in size are thought to have occurred because of developmental, morphological and/or ecological pressures. To perform phylogenetic tests of the potential effects of these pressures, here we generated a dataset of more than ten thousand descriptions of insect eggs, and combined these with genetic and life-history datasets. We show that, across eight orders of magnitude of variation in egg volume, the relationship between size and shape itself evolves, such that previously predicted global patterns of scaling do not adequately explain the diversity in egg shapes. We show that egg size is not correlated with developmental rate and that, for many insects, egg size is not correlated with adult body size. Instead, we find that the evolution of parasitoidism and aquatic oviposition help to explain the diversification in the size and shape of insect eggs. Our study suggests that where eggs are laid, rather than universal allometric constants, underlies the evolution of insect egg size and shape. Size is a fundamental factor in many biological processes. The size of an 526 families and every currently described extant hexapod order24 organism may affect interactions both with other organisms and with (Fig. 1a and Supplementary Fig. 1). We combined this dataset with the environment1,2, it scales with features of morphology and physi- backbone hexapod phylogenies25,26 that we enriched to include taxa ology3, and larger animals often have higher fitness4. -

Altogether, 245 species are recorded including four species of Bolitophilidae, three species of Diadocidiidae, two species of Ditomyiidae, 34 species of Keroplatidae and 202 species of Mycet- ophilidae. 230 and 188 species are recorded from Georgia and the whole of Transcaucasia for the first time, respectively. Three new species –Sciophila georgei sp. nov., Leia katae sp. nov. and Anatella metae sp. nov. – are described including detailed illustrations of the male terminalia. Photographs are provided for an additional 38 species to highlight a variability of their general facies. Combined with earlier pub- lished data, the number of fungus gnat species in Georgia is set at 246. The estimated diversity of fungus gnats in Georgia is calculated using non-parametric methods and discussed with respect to other Western Palaearctic regions. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The five Nordic species of the genus Urytalpa Edwards (Diptera: Keroplatidae) are revised, of which one species, Urytalpa galdes Hedmark & Kjaerandsen, sp. n., is described as new to science based on males collected in northern Sweden. We find that the original type species assignment for Urytalpa (Platyura ochracea Meigen, 1818) is based on a misidentification, and in order to stabilize the nomenclature we therefore select a new type species, Urytalpa dorsalis (Staeger, 1840), sp. restit. A lectotype is designated for Orfelia ochracea (Meigen, 1818), comb. n. = Orfelia unicolor (Staeger, 1840), syn. n. The males of U. atriceps (Edwards, 1913), U. dorsalis, U. macrocera (Edwards, 1913) and U. trivittata (Lundström, 1914), and the females of U. dorsalis, U. macrocera and U. trivittata are described and illustrated based on Nordic material. -

Slez. Muz. Opava (A), 60: 11-23, 2011. Abstract: A total of 17 species of Bolitophilidae, 4 species of Diadocidiidae, 2 species of Ditomyiidae and 25 species of Keroplatidae are recorded from the Gemer region in central Slovakia. The material was obtained mainly in the years 2008–2010 by means of Malaise traps and by individual collecting by the authors. Five species, Bolitophila spinigera Edwards, 1925, Antlemon servulum (Walker, 1837), Orfelia nigricornis (Fabricius, 1805), Macrocera maculata Meigen, 1818 and Macrocera zetterstedti Lundström, 1914, are recorded from Slovakia for the first time. The occurrence of Asindulum nigrum Latreille, 1805 in Slovakia is confirmed. Key words: Insecta, Diptera, Sciaroidea, new records, faunistics, Slovakia, Europe Introduction Families of Sciaroidea (Diptera), so called fungus gnats, belong to one of the most species-rich groups of insects, with more than 5000 described species worldwide, but probably a similar number of species still await description. More than 1000 species of these families occur in Europe. In the recent checklist, the following numbers of species are reported from Slovakia for particular families: Bolitophilidae 19 (Košel & Ševčík 2009a), Diadocidiidae 5 (Ševčík & Košel 2009a), Ditomyiidae 4 (Košel & Ševčík 2009b), Keroplatidae 45 (Ševčík & Košel 2009b) and Mycetophilidae 445 (Ševčík & Košel 2009c). The adults are common in the undergrowth of forests, especially in shaded places alongside streams, in cavities under tree roots and overhanging stream banks, but sometimes also in other habitats such as meadows, caves and wetlands. -

Summaries of the number of species in families known to be in VC55 at that time were presented with the intention that fuller status assessments would be made in due course. The known records of flies to the end of 2020 are now being collated, checked, validated and plotted in order to produce a sequence of status reports as part of the Leicestershire Entomological Society Occasional Publication Series (LESOPS). Reviews of the Conopidae and Tephritidae have already appeared (Morris, 2021a, b) and are now followed by consideration of records from the fly families with a maximum of 10 species (Table 1). All material was collected from the Finnish Lapland, mainly from the north boreal ecoregion. Two of the recorded species are likely to be pyrophilous, associated with forest fire sites. A photo of the ventral appendage of the gonocoxite of Brevicornu setigerum Zaitzev is provided for the first time. The male hypopygium of Mycetophila haruspica Plassmann is redescribed.
