Diemer 'lnesi" Advisor: Dr. Petra Chu Museum Professions Program Approval: This thesis is an attempt to examine the current state of mobile technology use in museum education programs. Mobile technology is fast becoming the communications and learning medium of choice. Since its inception, there has been an entire generation born into today's digital and wireless world. This project endeavors to present the latest understanding of where mobiles fit into the general culture, museum visitor experience, and particularly into museum education. We will examine literature concerning the digital generation and their mobile use tendencies, the viewpoint of museum professionals, and what the future may hold for mobile communication devices and museum education. Perspective has also been drawn from survey of museum professionals for a recent international online conference on mobile device use as well as a limited evaluation specific to this thesis. Lastly, this thesis presents a hypothetical museum education program combined with the accompanying mobile technology infrastructure. The wireless network design is based on personal experience, and the technology used is actual off-the-shelf equipment that can be purchased by any institution. At the end of the thesis is a chronology of Information Technology development and evolution. It is included as an addendum along with an accompanying glossary of technical terms as added foundational information for the non-technical reader. The high growth rates observed on the Internet, and the popular perception that growth rates were even higher, led to an upsurge in research, development, and investment in telecommunications. The telecom crash of 2000 occurred when investors realized that transmission capacity in place and under construction greatly exceeded actual traffic demand. This chapter discusses the growth of the Internet and compares it with that of other communication services. Internet traffic is growing, approximately doubling each year. There are reasonable arguments that it will continue to grow at this rate for the rest of this decade. If this happens, then in a few years, we may have a rough balance between supply and demand.     ABSTRACT Title of Document: ROBOTICS AND THE FUTURE OF INTERNATIONAL ASYMMETRIC WARFARE Nicholas Grossman, Doctor of Philosophy, 2013 Directed By: Professor George Quester, Department of Government and Politics In the post-Cold War world, the world's most powerful states have cooperated or avoided conflict with each other, easily defeated smaller state governments, engaged in protracted conflicts against insurgencies and resistance networks, and lost civilians to terrorist attacks. This dissertation explores various explanations for this pattern, proposing that some non-state networks adapt to major international transitions more quickly than bureaucratic states. Networks have taken advantage of the information technology revolution to enhance their capabilities, but states have begun to adjust, producing robotic systems with the potential to grant them an advantage in asymmetric warfare. Through visitor observations and exit surveys, data showed that visitors were generally interested in engaging with technology and commonly used their devices to take pictures, especially of family members and the dinosaur exhibit. We recommended that the museum create an interactive digital map accessible via a mobile device, advertise the free Wi-Fi, and explore the implementation of an augmented reality photo booth and a scavenger hunt application. This began with point-to-point communication between mainframe computers and terminals, expanded to point-to-point connections between computers and then early research into packet switching. Packet switched networks such as ARPANET, Mark I at NPL in the UK, CYCLADES, Merit Network, Tymnet, and Telenet, were developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s using a variety of protocols. The ARPANET in particular led to the development of protocols for internetworking, where multiple separate networks could be joined together into a network of networks. ORCID: https://orcid.org/0000-0003-0766-2763 Email: [email protected] ACCEPTED MANUSCRIPT ABSTRACT Graduate students at the University of Manitoba were surveyed to find out if they used reference management software (RMS), features used, challenges and barriers to using RMS. Interest in different types of PDF management features and training options were also investigated. Both users and non-users of reference management software were invited to participate. Non-users managed their citations and references with a variety of other tools. The principal reasons for non-use were that students were not aware of options that were available, and the amount of time needed to learn the program. RMS users also mentioned the steep learning curve, problems with extracting metadata from PDFs, technical issues, and problems with inaccurate citation styles. Most of the students saved PDF documents to their computer. Students were most interested in full-text searching of PDFs, automatic renaming of PDFs, and automatically extracting citation metadata from a PDF.
