Thanking Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak for entrusting him with the portfolio, he said: "I promise to help him maintain public order and enhance the people's trust towards the government. I will also help (the new Deputy Prime Minister) Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. "At the same time, I will resign as chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC)," he said in a statement, following the reshuffle. According to him, all the proceedings, including those scheduled in August pertaining to 1Malaysia Development Berhad, would be postponed until the new PAC line-up was appointed at the next Parliamentary session. The member of parliament for Pulai took up the post of deputy home minister, which was previously held by Datuk Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar. The Cabinet reshuffle announced by Najib in Putrajaya, among others, saw Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin dropped as deputy prime minister and education minister. Meanwhile, Machang MP Datuk Ahmad Jazlan Yaakub, who was named rural and regional development deputy minister, described it as a huge trust which he would try his best to fulfill. A PEER-REVIEWED ARTICLE (RECEIVED – 14 JUN 2020: REVISED – 18 AUGUST 2020: ACCEPTED – 14 SEPTEMBER 2020) ABSTRACT This study examines on how participants’ education, economy and satisfaction contribute to the effectiveness of microcredit scheme known as Hijrah Selangor in widening the middle- income earners group in Selangor. To examine this, a cluster sampling consisting of 210 respondents, who reside and operate their businesses in three different zones, were given a AZJAF (e-ISSN: 2716-6643) Vol.1 No. 1 (2020) Page 57 set of questionnaires to gather the information. Several different statistical analyses are conducted with the main analysis being a multiple linear regression analysis. The results indicate that all studied variables; education, economy, and satisfaction have a positive relationship with the effectiveness of Hijrah Selangor. Economy has the most significant relationship and the highest effect on the effectiveness of Hijrah Selangor. The increase in monthly household income of the participants before and after joining the program is found to justify the objective of Hijrah Selangor in widening the middle-income earners group as shown in the demographic data where the monthly household income above RM10,000 has increased significantly from 2% to 60% after joining the program.

Lee Poh Onn ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute E-mail: [email protected] ISEAS Economics Working Paper December 2015 Abstract Healthcare in Malaysia has been characterised by a strong public sector presence where government hospitals and clinics acted as a primary source of care. The healthcare system has also been lauded as a model for other developing countries to follow as it has succeeded in improving the health status of Malaysians over time. With the rising costs of healthcare over the last three decades, the government is now facing increasing pressures to restructure its healthcare system. Social healthcare insurance, corporatisation, and privatisation have been increasingly seen as possible measures to supplement the current healthcare system dominated by the public sector. In Malaysia, the involvement of government-linked companies in the private healthcare sector has, however, raised conflict-of-interest issues. Political economy factors will continue to play out; the private sector will continue to play an increasingly important role in the provision of healthcare while a long-awaited social healthcare insurance plan takes shape. Ultimately, clear rules of governance, regulations, and transparency have to be put in place to ensure that standards are maintained, conflict-of-interest issues are checked, and that healthcare continues to remain accessible. This is a blow to the Japanese democracy as the great majority of youth are politically apathetic and they are distancing themselves from active participation in politics. This paper describes the growing political apathy among young Japanese citizens aged between 20 and 35 that needs to be changed. Policies of the state should advocate for issues of interest to younger voters. The engagement of Japanese youth is reflected in three major issues: the feminist movement, community service and environmental protection, all of which will be discussed in this paper. The country urgently needs more young Japanese to be engaged in issues concerning the relationship between the economic and political state of the nation. The paper argued that the political involvement of young Japanese is not being attended to seriously. Instead, political parties are busy securing votes from the largest group of voters, ignoring the young. This has led to the increase of political apathy among young voters, bringing the Japanese democracy into decline.

BN secretary-general Datuk Seri Mohamed Rahmat also called on component parties not to be complacent, in view of the losses suffered by the coalition in recent by-elections. "We lost in the Teluk Intan and Arau by-elections. With the existing economic and political problems, the Opposition, especially the DAP, think they can win more seats. "Even Pas, which won the Arau by-election, thinks that the existing political climate favours them. They are all out to win more seats as they regard their achievement in the Arau by-election a good indicator. "Despite these setbacks, BN remains strong and stable," he told reporters after attending Deepavali celebrations at `Little India' in Jalan Ungku Puan last night. Mohamed, who is Information Minister, said the BN was confident of retaining the two-thirds majority as the people were satisfied with its efforts to steer the country out of the economic problems. In Kuala Lumpur, Gerakan today said the party concurred with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad that the BN would still be able to form the Government in the next general election, although with a smaller majority. Gerakan president Datuk Seri Dr Lim Keng Yaik said the economic situation and the sacking of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim might have some effect on the election results.
