MEET MAX: A 2-year old boy from Denver, Colorado. Max has a rare genetic disease that wreaks havoc on his neurological system. The condition is too rare for a formal name and is only known by the gene - SLC6A1. SLC6A1 causes developmental disabilities, a movement disorder, and the onset of a debilitating form of epilepsy along with regres- sion between 3 - 4 years. Grandview has “adopted” Max as its Miracle Child for 2020. As a school, it is our goal to raise $15,000 for Max and the Non-profit organization Milestones for Maxwell. To help raise money and awareness for this rare genetic dis- ease. Our donations will go to assisting Max to receive the groundbreaking Gene Therapy Treatment that can wipe out this genetic disorder. We are One Pack, GO Wolves! Throughout the week of February 10-14, Grandview will be hosting many school events, with all proceeds going to Milestones for Maxwell. Grandview is set to help raise money and awareness for this rare genetic disease. Our donations will go to helping Max receive the groundbreaking Gene Therapy Treatment that can wipe out this genetic disorder. Be a part of something bigger than ourselves and let us come together as a communi- ty and help a little boy get his miracle. Thank you for your consideration. Get Ready for Cherry Creek Reads

Grab a new book or an old favorite and get ready to read! The Cherry Creek School District will celebrate the joy of read- ing during Cherry Creek Reads, coming up March 9-13.

Across our district, students, parents, teachers, staff, friends and family members are encouraged to read for 67 minutes or more during Cherry Creek Reads. That represents one minute for every Cherry Creek school. The goal is simple: to create a community of readers and foster a lifelong love of reading.

The theme for the week is “Read Together, Change Lives Together,” and is based on the inspirational book Because by Mo Willems, a New York Times bestselling author and illustrator. Because takes readers on a journey of self-discovery, with the realization of how one small event can change your life forever and make one wonder…. What’s my Because?

Enjoy this short video about the story behind the story of Because. Then get ready to read!

During Cherry Creek Reads, CCSD schools will hold a variety of special events, from guest readers to Skype sessions with noted authors and illustrators to family literacy nights

Parents are also encouraged to read with their children after school and have fun dinner table-discussions about the books each family member is reading. Grandview’s Annual School-Wide Read is HERE! Two years ago, 100+ GHS students and staff members read The Hate U Give, discussed the book over lunches, and went to see the movie together. Last year, 150+ wolves read 57 Bus and got to meet author Dashka Slater when she visited our school. This year, the GHS Library is excited to announce that the School-Wide Read is The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo.

The Deans’ Corner

Please excuse absences within 48 hours of absence and utilize the attendance line numbers. Excused absence means the student should be out of the building and off campus. Thank you for your support. Grandview High School is a closed campus during the school day for all 9th and 10th graders, which means freshmen and sophomores may not leave campus during the school day without proper parent/guardian notification. As an exception, those sophomores with a valid driver’s license and GHS Parking Permit (which means they are in good standing with their academics, behavior, and attendance) may come and go during the school day as their schedule allows.

Parking Lot Reminders:

1. Please adhere to the posted speed limit as well as all other traffic laws when driving on GHS property.

2. To park at GHS, you must have a valid parking pass, and you must park in the designated student parking lot.

3. You may only park in the accessible parking spaces if you have a valid permit to do so.

4. GHS is a closed campus for 9th and 10th graders. Taking underclassmen off-campus in your vehicle is prohibited.

5. The privilege of parking on school property grants consent to the school administration to search the vehicle without warning when there is a reason to believe that items in the vehicle threaten the general welfare or safety of students.

Failure to comply with the reminders, as mentioned above, can result in a possible Dean’s referral, a ticket, as well as loss of parking privileges. For additional information, please reference CCSD policies JIC and JIH and also the Grandview Student Handbook. The GHS Deans are also available to answer any questions.

Early Dismissal: If your student needs to be dismissed early from, class please use the following steps:

 Write a note excusing your student with date and time to be dismissed.  Student brings the note to the Main Office.  Student will turn in the note and receive an early dismissal pass.  Student presents early dismissal pass to the classroom teacher.  Student can meet you at your arranged pick-up location.

Did you know there is free math tutoring available at school every period, Tuesday through Friday? That’s right, if you need some extra math help outside of class, you can find it for no charge in the Math Tutoring Center (L204). If you have missed a class, need help preparing for a test, or are just confused about the day’s lesson, stop by the tutoring center!

PowerSchool Reminder:

This is a reminder to all parents and guardians to please make sure that PowerSchool phone numbers and emergency contact numbers are updated and accurate online. When we need to contact a parent, we want to ensure that we have parent/guardian information, not student phone numbers or disconnected numbers.

School Safety Grandview High School is committed to providing a learning environment where students, staff, and community members feel safe. This includes attention to both physical and psychological school safety. Each year, we revise our Readiness and Emergency Management for Schools (REMS) Template, which outlines important safety procedures we follow. This includes items such as our drill schedules and plans for preparation and response to potential school emergencies. On a regular basis, we conduct Fire, Secure Perimeter, and Lockdown drills, and we continuously revisit and revise all safety procedures. All of our procedures are designed in accordance with recommendations of best practice made from both external agencies and the Cherry Creek School District. By establishing such proactive measures and continually reflecting upon and adjusting our plans as needed, Grandview High School strives to promote and maintain a safe learning environment. For any questions related to school safety at Grandview High School, please contact Dr. Brad Weinhold, Assistant Principal, at 720-886-6591.

School Safety Terminology Evacuation/Fire Drill The school is evacuated due to a safety concern inside of the building.

Secure Perimeter All exterior doors are locked in response to a concern of a threat outside of the building. Business is conducted as usual inside of the building.

Lockdown Students and staff take immediate shelter in response to a concern of a threat inside of the building.

Shelter-in-Place (Severe Weather) Students and staff move to “tornado safe” areas on campus, which typically means on the first floor away from windows and doors. In the event of a tornado warning, all staff will shelter-in-place. Office staff will not be available to answer phones, and staff members will not be available to open doors for students or parents. Parents will be able to pick up students after shelter-in-place is ended (as determined by the Cherry Creek School District).
