  • Chapter 48 – Creative Destructor
Chapter 48 Creative destructor Starting in the late 19th century, when the Hall-Heroult electrolytic reduction process made it possible for aluminum to be produced as a commodity, aluminum companies began to consolidate and secure raw material sources. Alcoa led the way, acquiring and building hydroelectric facilities, bauxite mines, alumina refineries, aluminum smelters, fabricating plants and even advanced research laboratories to develop more efficient processing technologies and new products. The vertical integration model was similar to the organizing system used by petroleum companies, which explored and drilled for oil, built pipelines and ships to transport oil, owned refineries that turned oil into gasoline and other products, and even set up retail outlets around the world to sell their products. The global economy dramatically changed after World War II, as former colonies with raw materials needed by developed countries began to ask for a piece of the action. At the same time, more corporations with the financial and technical means to enter at least one phase of aluminum production began to compete in the marketplace. As the global Big 6 oligopoly became challenged on multiple fronts, a commodity broker with a Machiavellian philosophy and a natural instinct for deal- making smelled blood and started picking the system apart. Marc Rich began by taking advantage of the oil market, out-foxing the petroleum giants and making a killing during the energy crises of the 1970s. A long-time metals trader, Rich next eyed the weakened aluminum industry during the 1980s, when depressed demand and over-capacity collided with rising energy costs, according to Shawn Tully’s 1988 account in Fortune.

He developed a psychosomatic theory after a personal emotional trauma that he believed resulted in his subsequent development of a testicular cancer. From our analysis, it is clear that the two most fundamental principles of Hamer’s work, the psychosomatic “iron law of cancer” (Hamer’s first “law”) and the principle of pathogenesis being reversed into salutogenesis (Hamer’s second “law”), are well- established principles of holistic medicine today. Hamer’s understanding of symbols in medicine, virus and bacteria, and the evolutionary process itself (Hamer’s third, fourth, and fifth “law”) differs a great deal from both traditional and contemporary holistic medical theory and we did not find them substantiated.

Nixon’s thirty-five-year- old grand jury testimony and associated materials of the Watergate Special Prosecution Force.1 On June 23-24, 1975, President Nixon testified before two members of a federal grand jury who had traveled from Washington, DC, to San Clemente, California. The testimony was then presented in Washington, DC, to the full grand jury that had been convened to investigate political espionage, illegal campaign contributions, and other wrongdoing falling under the umbrella term Watergate. Watergate was the defining event of Richard Nixon’s presidency. In the early 1970s, as the Vietnam War raged and the civil rights movement in the United States continued its momentum, the Watergate scandal ignited a crisis of confidence in government leadership and a constitutional crisis that tested the limits of executive power and the mettle of the democratic process. “Watergate” was 1A list of the records that petitioners seek is attached to the Petition, filed concurrently herewith.

JUDITH MERRIL: AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY AND GUIDE Compiled by Elizabeth Cummins Department of English and Technical Communication University of Missouri-Rolla Rolla, MO 65409-0560 College Station, TX The Center for the Bibliography of Science Fiction and Fantasy December 2006 Table of Contents Preface Judith Merril Chronology A. Books B. Short Fiction C. Nonfiction D. Poetry E. Other Media F. Editorial Credits G. Secondary Sources About Elizabeth Cummins PREFACE Scope and Purpose This Judith Merril bibliography includes both primary and secondary works, arranged in categories that are suitable for her career and that are, generally, common to the other bibliographies in the Center for Bibliographic Studies in Science Fiction. Works by Merril include a variety of types and modes—pieces she wrote at Morris High School in the Bronx, newsletters and fanzines she edited; sports, westerns, and detective fiction and non-fiction published in pulp magazines up to 1950; science fiction stories, novellas, and novels; book reviews; critical essays; edited anthologies; and both audio and video recordings of her fiction and non-fiction. Works about Merill cover over six decades, beginning shortly after her first science fiction story appeared (1948) and continuing after her death (1997), and in several modes— biography, news, critical commentary, tribute, visual and audio records. This new online bibliography updates and expands the primary bibliography I published in 2001 (Elizabeth Cummins, “Bibliography of Works by Judith Merril,” Extrapolation, vol. 42, 2001). It also adds a secondary bibliography. However, the reasons for producing a research- based Merril bibliography have been the same for both publications. Published bibliographies of Merril’s work have been incomplete and often inaccurate.

When I arrived in graduate school, I did not know what it meant to be a historian and a writer. Working with him, especially in the development of this manuscript, I have come to understand my strengths and weaknesses, and he has made me a better historian. Thank you. The members of my dissertation committee have each aided me in different ways. Michael Stoff’s introductory historiography seminar helped me realize exactly what I had gotten myself into my first year of graduate school—and made it painless. I always enjoyed Mark Lawrence’s classes and his teaching style, and he was extraordinarily supportive during the writing of my master’s thesis, as well as my qualifying exams. I workshopped the first two chapters of my dissertation in Bill Brands’s writing seminar, where I learned precisely what to do and not to do.

  • Nixon's Caribbean Milieu, 1950–1968
Dark Quadrant: Organized Crime, Big Business, and the Corruption of American Democracy Online Appendix: Nixon’s Caribbean Milieu, 1950–1968 By Jonathan Marshall “Though his working life has been passed chiefly on the far shores of the continent, close by the Pacific and the Atlantic, some emotion always brings Richard Nixon back to the Caribbean waters off Key Biscayne and Florida.”—T. H. White, The Making of the President, 19681 Richard Nixon, like millions of other Americans, enjoyed Florida and the nearby islands of Cuba and the Bahamas as refuges where he could leave behind his many cares and inhibitions. But he also returned again and again to the region as an important ongoing source of political and financial support. In the process, the lax ethics of its shadier operators left its mark on his career. This Sunbelt frontier had long attracted more than its share of sleazy businessmen, promoters, and politicians who shared a get-rich-quick spirit. In Florida, hustlers made quick fortunes selling worthless land to gullible northerners and fleecing vacationers at illegal but wide-open gambling joints. Sheriffs and governors protected bookmakers and casino operators in return for campaign contributions and bribes. In nearby island nations, as described in chapter 4, dictators forged alliances with US mobsters to create havens for offshore gambling and to wield political influence in Washington. Nixon’s Caribbean milieu had roots in the mobster-infested Florida of the 1940s. He was introduced to that circle through banker and real estate investor Bebe Rebozo, lawyer Richard Danner, and Rep. George Smathers. Later this chapter will explore some of the diverse connections of this group by following the activities of Danner during the 1968 presidential campaign, as they touched on Nixon’s financial and political ties to Howard Hughes, the South Florida crime organization of Santo Trafficante, and mobbed-up hotels and casinos in Las Vegas and Miami.

  • 1 Theological Perspectives and Integration of Religion And
Theological Perspectives and Integration of Religion and Spirituality into Health Care1 Ulrich H.J. Körtner 1. Religiosity and Health in Modern Medicine Modern medicine makes use of the natural sciences and their methods, which forgo the “God hypothesis”, explaining sickness and health „etsi Deus non daretur“. Up to modernity, the cultural history of sickness and health is, to a great extent, the history of religion. Only the advent of modern medicine, based on natural science, leads to a separation of medicine and religion, and thus also of healing and salvation – unless, that is, the elevation of health to the highest good is to be understood as a new form of religion, and as a search for transcendence in the immanence of a society that suffers from a loss of transcendence. Yet there are also conspicuous religious connotations among the different varieties of alternative or holistic medicine, which are directed against so called Western academic medicine (“Schulmedizin”). Meanwhile, however, in medical science there is renewed interest in the religious dimension of sickness and health. In recent years, a number of investigations have been published in medical journals, which suggest a positive influence of religion and spirituality on the healing process and on the individual’s coping with sickness.2 Over the last years, the number of publications on spirituality, religion and faith in medical and nursing science journals has risen dramatically.3 In 1995, the World Health Organization incorporated the complex, “spirituality/religion/personal beliefs”, as a separate section into their survey for the ascertainment of health-related quality of life, since many patients considered it to be important (WHO survey WHOQOL-100).

  • A Summary of German New Medicine Karen Robinson May 2010
A Summary of German New Medicine Karen Robinson May 2010 I’m presenting this summary to articulate my understanding of the extraordinary medical research of Dr. Ryke Geerd Hamer, called German New Medicine. Dr. Hamer’s important and vast body of work is no less than a new discovery of natural science as it applies to human health and illness, based on five empirically discovered and documented laws. His work tackles the problem of cancer and other chronic diseases, and gives us a new basis for understanding how and why disease arises, and where the real solutions lie. His book Summary of the New Medicine explains in detail the complete process. The research shows exactly how emotional conflicts end up manifesting as physical disease, how the whole disease process can be understood as an adaptive mechanism, and how we can heal. For bringing that mind/body perspective into the realm of modern medicine, it’s an eminently valuable contribution. German New Medicine is a new methodology so clear and logical that we would wonder how we could have accepted the old assumptions. Even in this short gist you may find all of your assumptions about disease and healing challenged. So be prepared for an interesting look at the old beliefs in light of this new research.. and in the spirit of the New Medicine, let’s see how those old beliefs might be reevaluated. GNM shows us that the draconian medical treatments we’re familiar with are most often misguided, unnecessary, and damaging. We do have other options, ones that truly heal, not just suppress and weaken us over time.
