1956 Apple Festival Souvenir Issue TV Weekly Roundup "QUEEN KATHY"

The reigning queen of the Murphysboro Apple Festival is Miss Kathy Etherton, the very attractive 18 year old young lady you see on the front cover of this magazine. She lives on a farm south of Murphysboro with her mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Ether ton, her twin sister Carolyn and 14 year old brother Pat. An older brother, John, is serv

ing with the armed forces in Japan. Kathy lives in the heart of the apple country of Southern Illinois, and has spent many hours picking and otherwise helping to process the bumper apple crops of the area. She has other farm interests, too. She has invaded both the animal and fashion phases of 4-H Club work, winning blue rib bons on her Holstein cow and on a dress mak ing project. She attended the Illinois State Fair this year to model the prize winning ap parel she made for her project. She also helped to represent Jackson County 4-H Clubs MISS KATHY ETHERTON as a member of a livestock judging team that entered competition in Champaign. Such canalization of Big Muddy River and

Beaucoup Creek would make the very heart of our distressed Southern Illinois area access ible to the barge routes of the whole North American continent when the St. Lawrence Seaway is finally completed. I can envision processing plants for aluminum, iron ore fines and chemicals being located along these routes. It is also possible to have electric generating plants at the mine site—with ade quate water at the same location for cooling, thereby reducing the cost of electricity to other industrial users. All of these develop ments would attract related and allied manu facturing concerns. Since the turn of the century the people of Southern Illinois have contemplated the eco Continued over nomic advantages and possibilities of an in land water route to the heart of the great coal deposits that underlie practically all of the Big Muddy River basin in southwestern Illinois.

Numerous investigations and reports have been made by various Federal and State agencies concerning the potentialities of the Big Muddy River basin, the majority of which dealt primarily with improvements for navi gation.

Since World War II the economy of Big Muddy basin has been going through a rapid transition from undeveloped agriculture to a highly scientifically developed agriculture with special emphasis on development of forest pro ducts. In addition, the economy is changing from a one-industry depending on coal to one based on a diversity of manufacturing. With this industrial growth to a total of 792 in dustrial establishments by 1953, approximate ly 20,000 new factory jobs were provided in an area that has been plagued with declining Big Muddy River with its tributary Beaucoup jobs in the coal mines. A progress report on the fund-raising campaign will also be made as well as a discussion of plans and etc.

The program will be presented by Wayman Presley of Makanda, Illinois who is chairman of the Executive Committee of the Bald Knob Christian Foundation. The program will fea ture the Union County Illinois widow, Myrta Clutts, whose sow farrowed 21 pigs following her faith pledge to contribute $100 to the Cross fund.

Myrta and her talentt, Presley is placing the offspring of her famous litter with farmers who are raising them to swell the Cross fund. Already 57 sows are on the production line in the expansion program. These have accumu lated in 3 months. Presley expects them to multiply into about 40,000 head in 3 1/2 years by which time the movement is expected to cover about 100 counties in the 4-state corn belt.

The big Cross is to be the symbol of our nation’s united faith, the foundation points out. It is to be built by the people with free will offerings. Already more than $135,000 has been contributed to the bank of deposit. The main shaft is to cost a million dollars. CIRCUS BANDMASTER — Louis Armstrong Members of the Foundation’s Governing Board brings his famous trumpet to the first Fall are also to be presented on this program.
