OUR OPINION Every election matters n 1864, the United States staged a presidential election because that’s what the Constitution Icalled for. Never mind the Union itself was in jeopardy and might have been severely diminished had the vote totals turned out differently that November. The stakes were far less stupefying Monday in Georgia, Kentucky and Louisiana, yet those states chose to postpone their presidential primaries due to coronavirus concerns. Ohio tried to follow suit but was blocked by a judge as of this writing. It is one thing to cancel a concert or county fair (as they did Monday in Live Oak) due to health ESPECIALLY TODAY concerns, but quite another to delay an election. The stakes may be high these days, with disease raging around us, but they are not not high enough for that. Irish eyes are smiling Lives are at stake, we are told. 2020 OLYMPICS COLLEGE BASKETBALL IOC official says no deadline for decision UF’s Bassett enters transfer portal

Associated Press

GAINESVILLE — Florida forward Dontay Bassett is looking to trans- fer after playing in just 17 games this season. School officials said Monday that Bassett has entered the NCAA transfer portal and will have imme- diate eligibility elsewhere next season as a gradu- ate transfer. A 6-foot-9 junior from Oakland, California, Bassett Bassett played behind fel- low big men Omar Payne and Jason Jitoboh — both freshmen — this season and was on the court spar- ingly during Southeastern Conference games. Bassett averaged 1.2 points, 1.7 rebounds and 6.7 minutes. He’s the fifth frontcourt player to leave coach Mike White’s program in the past 16 months, following Chase Johnson (Dayton), Keith Stone (Miami), Isaiah Stokes (Memphis) and Gorjok Gak. Gak announced his inten- tions to transfer in November and has since revealed he needs shoulder surgery. NFL FLORIDA GATEWAY PRO RODEO Draft on Running wild and holding on tight schedule, no public events in Las Vegas

By BARRY WILNER Associated Press

NEW YORK — The NFL will proceed with its draft but without public events next month in Las Vegas. It’s not yet clear, however, if the draft itself will be held in the city. Commissioner Roger Goodell said Monday the draft will take place April 23-25 as scheduled, but under a modified format still being developed. The draft will be televised regardless of its venue or format. “In consideration of cur- rent information related to COVID-19 and guidance from medical experts such as the CDC, and in coordi- nation with public author- ities in Nevada and the city of Las Vegas, the NFL will modify its plans” the Photos by RAY CARPENTER PHOTOGRAPHY/Lake City Reporter league said in a statement. The NFL says it is exploring “innovative options” for how the process will be handled and will provide that information as it becomes available. “This decision reflects our foremost priority: the health and safety of all fans and citizens,” Goodell said. “While this outcome is disappointing both to the NFL and to the Las Vegas community, we look forward to part- nering with the Raiders, the city of Las Vegas and the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority for a future NFL draft as well as evaluating opportuni- ties for other major NFL events in Las Vegas in the future, including the Super Bowl.” Next year’s draft is scheduled for Cleveland, and the 2022 draft has not been awarded, though Los Angeles has been considered the favorite. Kansas City has the 2023 draft. For most people, the new coronavirus causes only mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough.
