VII (2014), pp. 413-433 ORNELLA ALBOLINO THE TOURISM IN CROATIA: POLITICS, PROJECTS AND ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY Abstract - The paper aims to consider the development and evolution of the tourism in Croatia and its economic and social impact. Croatia can be considered an interesting case study dealing with the relationship between tourism and sustainable development. In particular a special focus on local specificities seems to be present in policy planning and project implementation. Even if seaside tourism is prevailing, initiatives towards sustainability are concentrated on environmental, rural and cultural tourism. The Country is characterized by wide variety and rich cultural heritage and tourism development is one of the most Croatian important economic activity. Now there are many institutional documents for a sustainable tourism development but those plans are not followed by appropriate implementation instruments. Actually a coordinated and integrated sustainable tourism planning at national scale is absent. At local level, counties and Tourist offices show instead great attention to sustainability, creating projects for the development of rural and insular tourism. A particular example is the County of Istria: it is not characterized by seasonal tourism and it is able to promote an integrated tourism development. Regions and types of tourism - This paper (*) is meant to analyze the development and evolution of the tourist sector in Croatia, also with reference to the latest policy planning concerning environmental sustainability. Croatia can be considered an interesting case study on the relationship between tourism and sustainable development. -

For a long time, it has been the residence of medieval Croatian dynasties, whose splendor is still visible in the old town. During the day, life mainly takes place on the beaches and the harbor prome- nade, in the evening the bustle shifts to the promenade of the old town. Numerous shops, restaurants, cafes, bars and ice cream parlors await the tourists. Biograd is a popular port of departure in the heart of Dalmatia. The Pasman Canal and the islands of Pasman and Uglijan, as well as the beautiful world of the Kornati Islands are right on the doorstep. MURTER Jezera, Murter and the bays Murter is also called the gateway to the Kornati, but the peninsula itself has also a lot to offer. The starting port Jezera is a lovely little place with a nice beach, shops, restaurants and bars. The main town of Murter, is a lot bigger and busier. Especially the nightlife of Murter has a lot to offer. -

P. oceanica shoots produced, on average, 1 leaf every 47 d, though leaf forma- tion rates in the populations increased from north to south (range 5 7 to 8.9leaves shoot-' yr-'). P ocean- ica is a long-living seagrass, with shoots able to live for at least 30 yr P, oceanica recruited shoots at low rates (0.02 to 0.5 In units yr-l) which did not balance the mortality rates (0.06 to 0.5 In unlts yr.') found in most (57 %) of the meadows. If the present disturbance and rate of decline are maintained, shoot den- sity is predicted to decline by 50% over the coming 2 to 24 yr. -

Seagrasses have key ecological roles in coastal ecosystems and can form extensive meadows supporting high biodiversity. The global species diversity of seagrasses is low (b60 species), but species can have ranges that extend for thousands of kilometers of coastline. Seagrass bioregions are defined here, based on species assemblages, species distributional ranges, and tropical and temperate influences. Six global bioregions are presented: four temperate and two tropical. The temperate bioregions include the Temperate North Atlantic, the Temperate North Pacific, the Mediterranean, and the Temperate Southern Oceans. The Temperate North Atlantic has low seagrass diversity, the major species being Zostera marina, typically occurring in estuaries and lagoons. The Temperate North Pacific has high seagrass diversity with Zostera spp. in estuaries and lagoons as well as Phyllospadix spp. in the surf zone. The Mediterranean region has clear water with vast meadows of moderate diversity of both temperate and tropical seagrasses, dominated by deep-growing Posidonia oceanica. -

Epiphyte accruel patterns and effects on Posidonia oceanica By Emily Hardison and Scott Borsum Abstract This study focuses on the relationship between Posidonia oceanica leaves and the epiphytes that live on those leaves at Stareso Research center in Calvi Bay, Corsica. We determine patterns of epiphyte accrual along Posidonia oceanica leaves for depths of 5m, 10m, 15m, and 20m and calculate the abundance of epiphytes across this depth range and the biomass of epiphytes in Posidonia oceanica bed at each depth, through in water measurements and characterizing epiphyte loads of samples brought onshore. We show that epiphytes aggregate in depth specific and leaf-side specific patterns along Posidonia leaves, cause degradation of live Posidonia tissue, and contribute a significant amount of biomass to Posidonia oceanica beds and detritus. We attempt to explain why certain patterns of epiphyte accrual are seen by determining that the convex side of the leaf most commonly faces up towards the sun. Introduction Posidonia oceanica is a protected endemic seagrass species in the Mediterranean Sea. This species is particularly interesting because of the large role it plays in maintaining a healthy and diverse Mediterranean ecosystem. It grows in vasts meadows and provides habitats, food, and nursery areas for a wide array of species (Boudouresque C. et al., 2006). Despite its energy expensive lifestyle, Posidonia is able to survive in the nutrient poor waters of the Mediterranean Sea (Lepoint, 2002). Posidonia is often inhabited by epiphytes. Previous research has shown that epiphyte load on Posidonia leaves has a negative relationship with depth (Lopez, 2012). Light attenuates with depth and can therefore become a limiting factor for primary producers, like Posidonia. -

This island is on both sides – land and sea one – connected by bridges. So, besides being connected with the mainland, Trogir is also connected with the small island Čiovo. While entering the old town and walking through the narrow streets of Trogir you will feel history all around you. All the buildings in Trogir’s old center are a mixture of different art styles, mainly Renaissance and Baroque ones. The bell tower of the Cathedral of St. Lawrence built in 13th century offers a stunning view. Smart Islands Declaration New pathways for European Islands to create smart, inclusive and thriving island societies for an innovative and sustainable Europe Forward Who we are We are European island local and regional authorities and actors representing our islands with the goal to promote the Smart Islands Initiative. The Smart Islands Initiative is a bottom-up effort spearheaded by island authorities and communities that communicates the need to tap the significant, yet largely unexploited potential of islands to function as laboratories for technological, social, environmental, economic and political innovation. The Smart Islands Initiative builds on years of collaboration between European islands and seeks to demonstrate that islands can host pilot projects and produce knowledge on smart and efficient resource and infrastructure management, which may be then transferred in mountainous, rural and generally geographically isolated areas but also scaled-up in big cities of continental Europe and beyond. The Smart Islands Initiative is inspired by the European Commission’s Smart Cities and Communities initiative, yet it goes one step further by extending the synergies beyond energy, transport and ICT to also include water and waste, directly addressing circularity in the economy. This holistic approach derives from insularity, the condition that forces island authorities to focus on how to ensure the optimal use and management of their resources and infrastructures, very often within island boundaries, in order to support sustainable and equitable economic development that fully taps into islands’ potential (geography, natural and human resources, products). Ultimately the Smart Islands Initiative advocates in favor of a place-based, transformative development agenda that makes the most out of islands’ competitive advantages, generates local growth and prosperity and contributes to EU policy goals in the fields of energy, climate mitigation and adaptation, innovation, circular economy, transport and mobility, blue growth, and the digital agenda.
