CR _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________ TUESDAY 26 JANUARY TELEVISION & RADIO HIGHLIGHTS / BBC WEEK 4 _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Patrick Kielty’s Mulholland Drive NEW Tuesday 26 January BBC One Northern Ireland, 10.45pm Patrick Kielty's Mulholland Drive on BBC One Northern Ireland on Tuesday 26 January at 10.45pm, sees the Dundrum-born comedian on a search around his second home in California to find out the truth about a man who lent his name to one of the most famous roads in the world. Yet today this man remains largely forgotten in Los Angeles and virtually unknown in Northern Ireland, where he was born. This is a story of power, politics, violence and greed straight out of a Hollywood movie, in fact it has been the basis for several, and William Mulholland from Belfast was right in the centre of it. He was a visionary, one whose brilliance stretched beyond the everyday to encompass the seemingly unachievable, a man of steely determination, and in 1913 his career seemed unstoppable as he completed America's most ambitious engineering project - the Los Angeles Aqueduct, which brought power and water and ignited the growth of the city. Mulholland is hailed as the man who created LA, but as Patrick, whose father and grandfather worked for the NI water authorities discovers, the story doesn’t have the Hollywood ending Patrick hoped for. Patrick Kielty’s Mulholland Drive has been made for BBC Northern Ireland by Green Inc Productions. CC _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ THURSDAY 28 JANUARY TELEVISION & RADIO HIGHLIGHTS / BBC WEEK 4 _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ The Arts Show Thursday 28 January BBC Two Northern Ireland, 10pm The Arts Show returns to BBC Two Northern Ireland bringing you in-depth coverage of the best of arts, culture and creativity in Northern Ireland. The first programme will also exclusively reveal and profile the recipients of this year’s Arts Council of Northern Ireland’s MIA’s (Major Individual Awards), which grant £15,000 each to three practitioners. Plus, Anna Lo, MLA, looks at the symbolism around Chinese New Year and artist Stuart Cairns, winner of the first Rosy James Bursary Award, talks about his first solo exhibition in Lisburn. Live music comes from Derry/Londonderry group, Ports (formerly Little Bear), who are appearing at this year’s Out To Lunch festival in Belfast. Celebrating Years of Music A Serenade to Music “We are the music-makers And we are the dreamers of dreams…” (Arthur William Edgar O’Shaughnessy, Ode) The story of BBC Northern Ireland’s involvement in nurturing and broadcasting local musical talent is still in the making. This exhibition provides a revealing glimpse of work in progress at the BBC’s Community Archive in documenting the programmes and personalities who have brought music in all its different forms to life, and looks at how today’s broadcasters are responding to the musical styles and opportunities of a new century. It celebrates BBC NI’s role in supporting musical diversity and creative excellence and reflects changes in fashion, technology and society across 80 years of local broadcasting. “ Let us celebrate the way we were and the way we live now. Much has been achieved since 2BE’s first faltering (and scarcely heard) musical broadcast in 1924. Innovation has Let us celebrate the ways we will be... been a defining feature of every decade from early radio concerts in regional towns and country halls to the pioneering work of Sean O’Boyle in recording traditional music and Sam Hanna Bell’s 1950s programmes of Belfast’s Let us count the ways to celebrate. street songs. The broadcasts of the BBC Wireless Orchestra and its successors find their contemporary echo in the world-class performances of the Ulster Orchestra and BBC NI’s radio and television schedules continue to Let us celebrate.” reverberate to the diverse sounds of local jazz, traditional and country music, religious services, brass bands, choirs, (Roger McGough - Poems of Celebration) contemporary rock, pop and dance music.
