A Resignation and an Appointment

Good Evening, Board,

Due to personal reasons, I feel that I can no longer be effective in the Treasurer’s posi- tion, and am therefore respectfully submitting my resignation, effective June 30, 2015.

Liese Hookey ****************************************************

Liese,

I know you have had a lot on your plate and I certainly understand your position for stepping down. Being the Treasurer is an overwhelming job.

Thank you for all that you've done for the club in the last six months as Treasurer as well as your service on the Board for the last five years.

It was appreciated by all!

Betty Officers & BOD - OTCPBC

*********************************************

Effective July 1st Joan Bruno will be taking over as Treasurer. For those of you that do not know Joan she was our Treasurer for 13 years before moving to Nebraska for a short time. Nebraska was a place that Joan swore didn't get much snow, but soon learned otherwise! LOL!

Welcome back to your old job!

Thank you - A little late but still heartfelt

This past weekend's Obedience Trials in Ft Pierce (June 6 & 7) were something to be proud of for all involved. As a member of OTCPBC and MFDC, the two host clubs, it was wonderful to hear all of the nice comments from exhibitors and workers and to see all four of our Obedience Trials running smoothly.

The exhibitors had many nice things to say about the location, the quietness of three separate show buildings, (the novice people particularly commented on appreciating having this quiet), access to a full size practice ring, ample crating room, the range of classes offered (lots of compliments on Wild Card being offered), and (of course) there were more than a few exhibitors that were thrilled to com- plete a Title in two days!!!

The MFDC members that turned out to work the Trials as ring stewards and help with the trophy ta- ble all had this common observation... the Obedience people are all so very nice and the dogs clearly enjoy their work!

If there's a well deserved Thank You to be said for pulling these show together and making sure they ran smoothly, it goes to Celeste for all of the hours and hours that she put into these Obedience Trails!

Celeste did a fabulous job as Show Secretary & problem solving guru. None of this would have been possible without her attention to detail and planning ability.

A Big Thank You to Sherry for all of her help making these Trials a success, overseeing numerous details, and keeping everyone on task... from making sure the mats and rings were laid just right, and up to the final loading of the last bits of equipment back into the trailer.

More Thanks and Gratitude go to Charlotte for her organizational efforts as Chief Ring Steward - it wasn't easy!

Huge Thanks and Appreciation to all of the members of OTCPBC, members of MFDC, and David's students for coming out to steward.

Besides stewarding, David's students did a fabulous job singing the National Anthem each morning before the Trials began and helped with some of the clean-up / packing-up on Sunday afternoon.

This was my first time Show Chairing an Obedience Trial and there's no way I could have done it without all of you! (It was also my first time vacuuming mats... wish I was as disciplined about vacu- uming my own carpets!)

I'm certain there are several people I'm forgetting to thank, typing this on my iPhone from the Tampa Fairgrounds where we have shows this weekend... some of you are probably here too!

Anyway, Thank You, Thank You, Thank You to all that supported these shows both in person and from afar - happy exhibitors makes us all happy!

Thank you, Kim Carey

Report from the Obedience Trial, June 6 & 7, 2015. Celeste Platte – Trial Secretary

Thank you to all the club members that attended and helped at the June trial at the St. Lucie County fairgrounds. The judges enjoyed themselves and we, the committee, heard quite a few positive comments about the trial. The Novice people particularly enjoyed the quieter venue in the smaller building. Fran Smith did an awesome job with the club’s raffle. She took in nearly $600 in the five hours prior to the drawing. THANK YOU Fran.

Thank you to Janet Moore for getting all the water, mints, and goodies for the judges and workers. Janet was not able to attend the trial as she was enjoying herself so much with gardening and sewing, that she over did it and wound up flat on her back. We missed your Janet. Thanks for your help and making sure your husband brought all the stuff to the fairgrounds for us.

Charlotte Czermann. What can I say? You came through for us again. Getting volunteers to steward and then making sure they got to their assigned locations was a monumental job. Things were not looking so good two days before the trial, but members stepped up and member David Sommer and his students came through to volunteer where they were needed.

David Sommer. Thank you for bringing the students to the trial to sing the national anthem to start the trial each day for us. I heard so many compliments on their performance. Also thank you for being the Trophy Chair and putting everything together to go to the rings. Your assistance with inputting the scores was invaluable. It enabled me to get the tear sheets up quickly for the exhibitors to view.

Thank you Sherry Cooper, Chair for OTC and Kim Carey, Chair for MFDC. I know you two were making your rounds to the rings and buildings checking if anything needed to be taken care.

I was somewhat disappointed that more of our members did not enter and support the trial. I know a lot of you have gotten titles at the Club’s Novice only trials, but continued practice with your dog makes you and him/her better exhib- itors. There is a saying; when you get your Open title, you have a good Novice dog and when you get your Utility title, you have a good Open dog. From one who has shown for many many years, whenever I have a chance to get into the ring with my dog, even though I already have the title, I take advantage and learn more about us as a team and we improve our performance

The total entries for all four trials were as follows:

75 utility entries; 65 open entries; 39 novice entries; 84 optional titling entries; 92 wild card entries

We had a lot of support from the Indian River Obedience Club and the Brevard County Dog Training Club. Think about supporting their trials in August and October in Melbourne. It is a great venue with hotels close by the auditori- um.

Based on my record keeping of income from entries and expenses, it appears the club made money this year - $412. This profit was a direct result in Fran Smith’s hard work with the Raffle and the practice ring many people paid and took advantage of. Obedience Trials SELDOM make money. That is why in 1995, as we were seeing more and more agility trials in Florida (at that time they had to be in conjunction with obedience trials) it became apparent that agility was a great way to offset the cost of obedience trials. A few of the club’s members approached the Board and mem- bers with the proposal to start agility at OTC. It was not met with enthusiasm. In fact, one of the most OUTSPOKEN opponents to this idea was our very own benefactor, Buz Taylor. With perseverance and actual figures as to what these trials could bring into the club and the cost of minimal equipment to start with (some was handmade), the mem- bership finally agreed to add agility to the performance events this club participates in. Buz forgave us because he realized this would benefit his beloved obedience.

Thank you again to all who came to show, help or just observe. Happy Trialing.

The Story of a Junior The 4H (Hand, Heart, Head, Health) is a youth club that teaches students under 18 years old to be responsible by learning how to care for animals, or engage in projects such as sewing and robot- ics or train their dogs in obedience. Community Service is also an important part of this club.

Two years ago I was asked by a 4H leader if I would come to the St. Lucie County fair and judge the 4H obedience members in a friendly competition. I agreed. It was quite engaging to see these young people working their dogs. In March of this year I was once again asked if I would come and judge. I saw many of the same students as the year before including a young lady by the name of Grace Pardo (almost 15). This year, Grace decided to take the next step and do the obedience routine off lead. I was so impressed with the progress she had made from last year, I offered to mentor her if she was interested in earning some AKC titles.

After speaking with Grace’s mother, I started traveling to Grace’s house one or two days a week to work with her and her little Chihuahua Cookie. I also brought her to the club for run thrus as school work and timing allowed. Grace and Cookie worked very hard on the Beginning Novice exercises. Unfortunately, Grace had picked up some bad habits, not knowing any better. We spent a lot of time smoothing out those rough patches.

As our June obedience trial approached, Grace felt she was ready to give the Beginner Novice title a try. She and Cookie showed in the morning trial and passed. Her score was not great, but for the first time in the ring, she did great. I saw that some of those rough patches had come back to haunt her again, which accounted for her low score. Saturday afternoon, all was going well until Grace told Cookie to stay and as Grace started to walk away, she swung her hand and Cookie thought she was telling her to come. Rookie mistake and an NQ. Now Grace had a taste of a Q and an NQ. She wanted two more Q’s and a title.

Sunday came and Grace and Cookie did much better and their score reflected it. Still not the score Grace wanted, so she practiced with Cookie until the afternoon trial. Grace’s had work paid off. Not only did she finish her title in four shows, but got a 197 in the afternoon trial. She was ecstatic. Now we are practicing for the Novice title. Her mother says Melbourne is doable, so look for Grace and Cookie at the Indian River Dog Training club in Melbourne August 1 and 2. Three trials in two days. They are also offering Rally.

If you have a chance to mentor a young person, please take the opportunity. Your children, grandchil- dren, next door neighbors. It has been rewarding introducing Grace to a sport I love so much. I look forward to seeing her earn future titles.

Dana Elmore and Coco Pom earned their MACH 8 title in Agility at the Calusa Dog Agility Club trials in Arcadia on Saturday, June 13th. “Mighty Mouse”, Dana’s 2 year old Papillon earned his Open Standard and Excellent Jumpers titles at the OTCPBC Agility trials in Arcadia with Blue Ribbon performances.

Sky Cowboy continues to improve his yards per second times in agility, currently holding the number two spot in the Bad Dog Agility Power 60 rankings for 8” jump height dogs thru the first quarter of this year. The OTCPBC Board of Directors A Special meeting on Monday, May 11, 2015.

Board Members in attendance: Betty Gansky, President, Frank Lannon, Vice President, Joan Bruno, Secretary, Liese Hookey, Treasurer Page Athan, Board Member, Robert Millar, Advisor – for beginning portion only.

Guests: Marti Hohmann, Training Coordinator, Peggy DeMinico, Asst. Training Coordinator & Diane Wolak, OTCPBC General Member

Absent: Marjorie Butcher and Kelly McDonough, Board Members

Betty Gansky called the meeting to order at 7:05 P.M Liese Hookey requested this meeting to speak with the board about changing/adding to some of her bookkeeping practices. Betty announced that the mirrors will come down this Friday, May 12 and will be put back up after the Barn Hunt. It’s better to have them taken down and Page has someone who will take them down and store them. Page is covering the cost for the labor and storage . MANY THANKS, PAGE!!!! INSTRUCTOR PAYMENTS Liese took the floor and discussed invoices for Instructors teaching classes. According to the Accountant back up is needed for checks going out as Instructor payment. The night before the last class the instructor should send Liese the invoice with either Marti or Peggy’s ap- proval for payment. Peggy will be responsible for keeping track of the invoice supply etc. Instructors will now need to complete a W-4 form and send to Liese. If they receive payments in access of $600; Liese will issue a 1099 at the end of the year.

PAYPAL VS. CHASE CREDIT CARD MERCHANT SERVICES A discussion ensued regarding the rates that PayPal charges Chase Credit Card Merchant Services. Vari- ous fees were brought up Chase 1.9% fee. Marti pointed out potential challenges with Chase on other fees that would be charged as well. PayPal is cheaper and we are able to charge back the consumer for the Paypal fees. There would also be a sizeable fee for the reprogramming of the website shopping cart to change from Paypal to Chase. Motion was made by Joan Bruno to stay with PayPal and seconded by Frank Lannon. Motion approved.

TRAINING CLASS ROSTERS Discussion ensued regarding Liese’s with class rosters. A refined process is needed to ensure that every- one is paying the correct amounts for the classes. Payment for class must be received 14 days in advance or their spot will be cancelled. Diane Wolak will send reminder emails out 14 days prior to class to unpaid registrants. Diane would like to collect the checks. Joan stated that she is not a member of the board and did not think she was bonded; Liese will call Equisure to find out . Motion made by Page to allow Diane Wolak to assist Liese as needed with training rosters etc. Seconded by Frank Lannon. Motion passed.

CPA Discussion ensued regarding the requirements that the CPA, John Pearce, wants us to do. He wants us to tell him the amount of entries for each trial we had for 2014. We have never heard of something like that. Betty told Liese to call AKC and see if they can give you the totals. When Liese called AKC, they gave her the numbers. But, the person at AKC told her he has never in eleven years had anyone ask for this infor- mation. Mr.P earce has filed for an extension so we can resolve this issue. Joan asked Liese to look up the 2013 #990 and see if this information was entered on it or call John Pearce and ask him what line it is on.

MEMBER DISCOUNTS Betty and Marti spoke about discounts for members. They already get discounts and also a dis- count for hours volunteered. There is nothing in the Policy & Procedures addressing this

INSTRUCTOR PAYMENTS

Discussion ensued regarding paying all instructors money for teaching. The regular 7 week clas- ses, instructors earn $100.00. Question as to why the drop-in instructors are not paid. Betty noted that she drives 37 minutes to give a class and receives nothing in compensation for this. Payments for instructing should be for all instructors. A decision was made that all instructors get $100.00 and they can give their assistant 10% of what they have received. Drop in instructors will receive 10% of the money collected for their drop-in class. The difference goes to Treasurer. Vote was YES except for Joan who voted NO.

Frank made a motion to adjourn. Page seconded. Meeting adjourned at 8:45P.M.

Respectfully submitted,

Kelly A McDonough OTCPBC - Secretary

Board Meeting Conference Call Meeting Minutes – June 8, 2015.

On Conference Call: Betty Gansky – President Frank Lannon – Vice President Liese Hookey – Treasurer Kelly McDonough – Secretary Page Athan – Board Member Joan Bruno – Board Member

Absent: Marjorie Butcher

Betty Gansky, President called the meeting to order at 7:10pm.

Discussion ensued regarding the condition of the mats as they were rolled up on Thursday at the Club. Betty stated that Sherry Cooper made a motion to dispose of the moldy mats at that time. Betty stopped all work and gathered the members present and a vote was taken to dispose of the mats with mold after the trial. Vote passed unanimously. Some of the mats with mold were disposed of in Ft. Pierce – the remainder (including mats with mold) is on the rental truck with all of the equipment from the trial.

Discussion also ensued regarding the heavy brown tables. The club did not purchase these tables; they were donated by various club members over the years. Concern was raised that these tables may damage the new floor and they are very heavy to move. At the trial on Saturday, Fran Smith approached Betty about taking the brown tables home with her to use for a garage sale. Betty agreed to allow Fran to take the tables. Fran had mentioned bringing two of the tables back for the July party. They could be used outside for the grilling and then put in the shed afterwards.

Betty recommended purchasing approx. 6 – 6’ lighter weight white tables that are approximately $49.00 each.
