He was only twenty-four years old at the time. Based on Charles Perrault’s CENDRILLON of 1697, La Cenerentola follows a common girl who dreams of a happier life and a prince who seeks to marry the most beautiful girl he can find. Rossini’s plot diverges from the fairy-tale tradition and takes a more realistic approach, with an endearing and sensible central character. Director John Hoomes brings some of the magic spirit back by setting the farcical tale by the sea in his BEACH BLANKET BINGO -inspired staging. THIS SYNOPSIS HAS BEEN UPDATED TO REFLECT JOHN HOOMES’S BEACH-PARTY STAGING It’s morning in the broken-down surf shop owned by Don and tells him to search for the young woman wearing the Magnifico.

Elizabeth Neukirch Elena Tsallagova, Andrew Stenson, [email protected] 312-932-9911 Joshua Hopkins, and Alessandro Corbelli Seven performances February 17 - March 16 Subtitled “The School for Lovers,” this beloved and bittersweet comedy is a probing look into romantic relationships, for better and worse, revealed through the genius of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and his brilliant librettist, Lorenzo Da Ponte. Così fan tutte is sophisticated and thought-provoking...and also cheeky and slapstick. It’ll make you laugh and, at times, wince, remembering your own youthful amorous follies. It underscores how what lovers say and how they act often contradicts their true feelings. The music will move you to tears (the farewell trio “Soave sia il vento”) and astonish you with its breathtaking leaps and runs (the formidable aria “Come scoglio”). Mozart was a groundbreaker in comic opera, composing music to convey the psychological underpinnings of the stories he set, to go far beyond mere amusement. The overture lets you know what you’re in for.

Wigtil, M.M. University of Nebraska, 2020 Advisor: Pamela Starr The Met: Live in HD satellite broadcasts of live opera performances began in 2006 and have since become popular with audiences around the world. While this could be an excellent avenue to democratize opera and make it available to new audiences, the available data indicates that most Live in HD viewers are already opera enthusiasts and have previously attended live opera performances. This thesis examines the history of the Metropolitan Opera’s broadcasting efforts, the demographics of American opera audiences, trends in Live in HD’s repertoire, and strategies to increase Live in HD’s appeal to a broader, more diverse audience that can revitalize opera’s popularity in the United States.
