Dance Practice – Rumba & Samba Rumba: “Slow, Quick-Quick” Start Dance Practice – Rumba & Samba Remember to WARM UP and COOL DOWN! Practice LEAD (left first) and FOLLOW (right first) for all steps. Rumba: “Slow, quick-quick” Remember – this is a Latin dance. Toe-heel steps, rolling down smoothly. • Forward – Step first with LEFT foot. Then side-together (RIGHT – LEFT). • Backward – Step first with RIGHT, then side-together (LEFT – RIGHT). • Basic box – Put “Forward” step together with “Backward” for a box step! • IF YOU USE A PARTNER- it is easy! One does the backward as the other performs forward step. THOUGHT: This should look familiar! Many dances have a basic “box step”. What makes this different than the others you learn? FUN FACT: Rumba is Cuban in origin. TIPS: • Bring the rumba style! In addition to the side-to-side hip motion, allow them to travel forward and backward as you step. (Hip moves forward on the same side as the foot that is stepping.) Samba: “Quick-quick, slow” Remember – this is a Latin dance. If you feel you can, step smoothly toe-heel. • Side-together-back*– – Step side-together (LEFT -RIGHT), then step backward LEFT. Put full weight on each step. • Side-together-forward* – Step side-together (RIGHT-LEFT), then step forward RIGHT. Put full weight on each step. • Basic box – Put “Side-together-forward” together with “Side-together-backward” for a box step! • Backward–in-place – Backward LEFT, forward RIGHT, together LEFT. Backward RIGHT, forward LEFT, together RIGHT. • Forward –in-place – Forward LEFT, back RIGHT, together LEFT. Forward RIGHT, back LEFT, together RIGHT. • Chain – Link a bunch of forwards or backwards together! • IF YOU USE A PARTNER- it is easy! One does the backward as the other performs forward step. MAKE IT EASIER! 1. Dance with a flat foot if you cannot stay on your toes. 2. Dance this rhythm in place. MAKE IT MORE CHALLENGING. 1. Add arm movements! 2. Speed it up! Stay with the music… TIPS: Style of the samba - • Stay mostly on the balls of your feet – the samba is usually done to faster-paced music. Though you don’t have to do it this way, the style is quicker and higher on the balls of the feet. • Turn your toes/legs out slightly. Did you know…Samba is from Brazil, with African influence? 3 | Page 4 Last Updated: 28 October 2018 Dance Practice – Rumba & Samba WEEKLY BALANCE CHALLENGE: To bring in the fun hip action to the Rumba and Samba, improve your “toe-heel” step by strengthening your calves! Practice “calf raises” by coming up onto your toes and then lowering back down. • If this is challenging for your balance, practice next to a counter or sturdy chair. • If you’d like a greater strength challenge, practice this exercise on a step, lowering your heels so your toes point up. SAFETY TIP of the WEEK: Be sure that your footwear is secure and that the bottoms of your shoes are a good match with the surface you are dancing upon. o Bottom – No Slip, No Trip! You should be able to glide and slide enough not get stuck to the floor and trip, though you should have enough “stick” on the bottom of your shoes (or feet!) so you don’t slip. o What else? Shoes should be flexible enough to allow your foot to move and feel the floor, fit snugly but not tightly, with a little (not a lot!) room at the toes to allow for shifting without pinching when you step. This also allows proper blood and nerve flow! o A shoe with a secure heel is best so your shoe does not slide or get caught. o Yes! Dance with shoes and without shoes if you can! o Foot care: Take care to avoid objects that will hurt your feet, especially if you have low sensation (like neuropathy), but give it a try! Check your feet often, no matter how you dance! With the arrival of millions of immigrants, the shape of the city and its society suffered an intense process of modernization. Tango, a product from the bordello considered a threat to national identity, came to be a global success in only twenty years. Acclaimed in Paris and New York, despite its origins, tango became a symbol for Argentina, in a process of negotiations and the control of sexuality and gender and class relations. In this sense, tango reveals itself to be a cultural product that condenses ‐beyond the richness of the music‐ many of the key debates regarding the relationships between culture and society. This course proposes, through the reading of tango lyrics, films and novels, a critical analysis of theoretical problems such as national identity, gender studies and the consumption of culture in a global era.     Samba ! Brief History Samba is a dance and musical genre originating in Brazil, with roots from Africa via the West African slave trade and African religious traditions, particularly Angola and the Congo. Introduced in 1917, the Samba wasn't adopted by Brazil as a ballroom dance until 1930. In Brazil, Samba is mostly danced solo, and remains especially popular during celebrations of the Brazilian Carnival in Rio de Janeiro. The festive mood of the dance is responsible for its continued popularity. Samba is considered to be one of the most popular Brazilian cultural expressions, being is an icon of Brazilian national identity. Samba National Day is celebrated on December 2 every year! Samba has a very specific rhythm, highlighted by characteristic Brazilian musical instruments. To achieve the true character of the Samba, a dancer must give it a happy, flirtatious and exuberant interpretation. Characteristics and Technique Tempo: 80-125 beats per minute Rhythm: 1a2, 3a4 Time signature: 2/4 Principal characteristics of the Samba are the rapid steps taken on a quarter of a beat and the pronounced rocking motion and sway of the dance. The basic footwork of the Samba includes fast, three-step weight changes with a slight knee lift, led with alternating feet. The basic rhythm is ‘quick, quick, slow’. The major action of Samba, the ‘Samba Bounce Action’ gives the dance its unique look and feel. It is a gentle, rhythmic action felt through the knees and ankles. This action should appear effortless and carefree and should never be exaggerated. The ‘Samba Bounce Action’ is quite difficult to master, but really adds to the overall character of the Samba.

    Sarfati, Aaron MIT 21M030 – Ruckert December 7, 2006 The Samba Experience In examining and researching a foreign culture, there are two ways one may go about conducting the research: 1) reading and studying printed or recorded materials, or 2) living within the culture and experiencing it firsthand. But, sometimes the best research is a combination of the two, drawing from the theory of what should be and then comparing to what actually is practiced. The analysis of the similarities and the differences can sometimes be quite interesting. With this balanced method of research, I looked at Samba through a theoretical lens, analyzing its origins, studying the culture behind it, and examining its current history. Then, I attended a Samba concert in Cambridge, MA to see this style of music from the other lens – in practice. The goal of this experience was to understand firsthand what the music was, who the performers were, how the audience interacted, and what was the role of community in the practice and development of the music. The concert I attended with my wife was officially called “Halloween Halloween – Brazilian Music Festival: Samba Tremeterra” and featured the Samba Tremeterra group along with Ana Borges, the lead singer. The event was on Sunday, October 29, 2006 right before Halloween. It was held at the Middle East Downstairs club, which featured a large dance floor, a semi-large playing stage, two bars along the sides, and some scant seating. It was scheduled to start at 8:00 PM and go until around midnight. The first thing we noticed when we arrived was that the music had already started.
