This Sunday, January 10th marks the celebra on of the Bap sm of the Lord and officially ends the Christmas season. In the weeks since Christmas we have celebrated the birth of Jesus, the arrival of the Magi due to the cosmic change in the heavens indica ng the birth of the Son of God and Jesus’s bap sm in the Jordan River by St. John the Bap st that occurred when Jesus was about 30 years old, just three years before his crucifixion. In this short span of me since Christmas we celebrate events that span 30 years!
When we celebrate bap sm it is for the forgiveness of sins, original and personal and the making of us an heir of the Lord of Lords. If that is true, which it is, then why does Jesus need to be bap zed for he is “like us in all things but sin?” The bap sm of Jesus is not for the forgiveness of sins but as a public sign that he is accep ng and beginning his public ministry to be the suffering servant, the Lamb of God who will take away the sins of the world. By being Bap zed Jesus is modeling for us; as he was bap zed, so will future Chris ans (followers of Christ) be bap zed. This is God’s plan and Jesus is obedient to the Father, and, this weekend Jesus is giving us an example of humility and obedience.
A er the celebra on of the Bap sm of the Lord the Church returns to the season known as “Ordinary Time.” Ordi- nary Time is for those 33 or 34 weeks of the year that do not have a par cular aspect of the mystery of Christ cele- brated, such as Christmas, Lent, Triduum, Advent or Easter. Rather, during Ordinary Time, the mystery of Christ itself is honored in its fullness, especially on Sundays.
Ordinary me begins on Monday, January 11 and con nues through Tuesday Febru- ary 16, the day before Ash Wednesday and the beginning of the Lenten season. It will resume when the Easter season ends on Monday, May 24, the day a er Pente- cost. Ordinary Time is not a return to the “humdrum” of ordinary things, meaning not special or busy. Ordinary Time, its name coming from coun ng in ordinal num- bers, is special in its own right, for it is the con nued celebra on of Jesus the Messi- ah and Lord. Just because there is not a special tle like “Lent” of “Easter” we should never think Ordinary Time is ordinary!
