Suri Nagamma was the chosen instrument to cast the immortal sayings of this illumined, divine personality onto paper and to paint an exquisite picture of a Rishi’s life in modern times. She did this in the form of 273 letters to her brother, Sri D. S. Sastri, who translated them from Telugu for the benefit of the English-reading public. They cover the last five years of the Master’s earthly life, and are of particular relevance because they were shown to Bhagavan prior to being mailed. There is no other book from this period that captures so well the enlightened personality and profound sayings of the Master. These recordings will certainly guide seekers for countless generations. One hundred and thirty-five letters were translated into English and first published as Volume I in 1962. -

Reimagining Mardévirin: The Memory of Forgotten Religion in Postcolonial Mauritius Marek Ahnee 260357527 Faculty of Religious Studies McGill University Montréal, Canada March 2016 _______________________________________________________________________ A thesis submitted to McGill University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Religious Studies © 2016 Marek Ahnee Abstract This research is a contribution to the study of diasporic Hinduism. It draws on historical documentation and ethnographic fieldwork, focusing on the evolution of the cult of deity Mardévirin/Maduraivīraṉ, between South India where it originates and Mauritius Island, one of nineteenth-century plantation societies where it was transplanted following indenture. My research is an attempt to write a cultural history around the cult of Mardévirin. I first locate the latter’s origins in precolonial South India, in order to map out important themes - such as political symbolism, moral ambiguity and antinomian religiosity - that are mirrored and subverted on Mauritius Island. In the second part of the thesis, I argue that the colonial period was fertile ground for Mardévirin’s growing popularity, as the god’s legendary narrative and worship echoed the indentured plantation’s world and social reality. Under the influence of Indian religious nationalisms and the arrival of Mauritian independence, Mardévirin worship lost ground, the deity’s figure failing to fit in with the religious sensitivities of a new, nascent, “global” order. Finally, mainly through fieldwork, I have inquired about what subsists of Mardévirin in today’s Mauritius. I found that although the worship is now marginal and residual, Mardévirin is still remembered as a symbol of subaltern religious identity. -

Februar 2018 Preface The present work has a history of a few years, some of which might be of interest to the reader, and telling which will give me an opportunity to thank some of the many people I owe thanks to. Sometime in Hamburg in early summer 2008 I started looking into the options for my M. A. thesis, and discussed them with Harunaga Isaacson, whom I should thank for his guidance and support in all these years, as well as for the many reading sessions of the Haravijaya. I was interested in the topics of Tantra and Yoga, but as I expressed the desire to improve my Sanskrit, he suggested to look into works of Kāvya, and particularly the Haravijaya. I got Durgaprasad and Parab 1890 from the AAI library, sat down by the Alster lake, and was awed. The sound of Ratnākara’s Vasantatilakā-verses was beautiful, but I hardly understood anything. I had thought my Sanskrit was already quite good, but now this was a challenge! The sixth canto could have been an option already then, but the availability of MSS in the Bodleian libraries at Oxford, among which an autograph manuscript of Rājānaka Ratnakaṇṭha’s Laghupañcikā commentary on it’s first sarga as well as a manuscript of Utpala’s Haravijayasāravivaraṇa commentary, reaching up to somewhere in the third sarga, some preliminary photos of which were thankfully provided by Kiyokazu Okita, suggested to start at the beginning: The first canto being a description of Śiva’s city and of himself, the second canto a depiction of Śiva’s Tāṇḍava dance, which I would edit together with these two previously unedited commentaries. -
