  • 1 This Was the Year That the Shadows Appeared As Singers Before a Pan
1975 This was the year that The Shadows appeared as singers before a pan-European audience. The earlier 1973 initiative had not produced the desired outcome and by 1974 they were in the wilderness and did not exist as a viable group. They got together to perform at the Palladium on 27 October of that year as a personal tribute to and for the benefit of the widow of BBC producer Colin Charman. BBC boss Bill Cotton heard them and suggested that they might like to represent the UK at the Eurovision Song Contest the following year. They accepted, formed a working ensemble, and undertook a few local ‘practice’ gigs while preparing and practising the songs. The chosen song, [254] LET ME BE THE ONE, was one of six put forward for the UK’s entry in the Eurovision Contest of 1975, and was the last of the contenders performed over six successive weeks on Lulu’s BBC TV show at the start of the year. It was duly televised in Stockholm on 22 March but came in second to Dutch group Teach-In’s lyrically challenged ‘Dinge-Dong’ ~ English title ‘Ding-A-Dong’ (“Ding- A-Dong every hour,/ When you pick a flower …”), which impressed the British public sufficiently to enjoy a seven-week residence in the Singles charts (climbing to No.13). No such good fortune attended the release of The Shadows’ follow-up to their charting Eurovision Single, another piece from the same composer, the staggeringly inane, hopelessly unamusing [266] RUN BILLY RUN (“Closed my eyes, I tried countin’ sheep,/ Desp-rate Dan just looked like Bo-Peep,/ I can’t sleep”).

  • SHADOWS of the SEVENTIES an Article Covering the Shadows’ Most Creative but Criminally Overlooked Decade
SHADOWS OF THE SEVENTIES An article covering the Shadows’ most creative but criminally overlooked decade. By Chris Drake 1 In August 2013, Music Club Deluxe/Parlophone released a 2CD Shadows compilation CD entitled The Collection . The slipcase and inner insert featured a big close-up of the by now obligatory red and white Fender Stratocaster, which during the past 30 or so years has become synonymous with virtually any Shadows-related product. It’s an attractive and eye-catching image. What is worth remarking in this case is that the 35 tracks contained within come almost entirely from the 1970s – a period of the Shadows’ history in which there wasn’t a single red (or Salmon Pink !) Fender Strat in sight. But, in fairness, would a close-up of the scratch plate, body and other furnishings, all uniformly in black, have made the product stand out on the shelves? What is interesting also is that the period covered represents something of a commercial low-point for the band, with very little in terms of hit singles and albums compared to the previous decade. What it does contain, on the other hand, is some of the band’s most creative and impressive recordings and suggests that perhaps the Shadows’ output of the 1970s is worth listening to and evaluating after all. The basis of this article, therefore, will be the contents of MCDLX187: The Collection . Before venturing into the territory so comprehensively covered by the compilation, let’s just pause for a few moments to consider the period leading up to it and the way in which the Shadows seemed to prepare the ground for this new and potentially very exciting decade.

  • Shades of Rock
1970 The Shadows were kept alive to appear on Cliff’s TV show, and a charting Album appeared in October. In fact, Hank Marvin was in the spotlight far more, by virtue of his appearances in the Cliff TV series as all-round entertainer, of recording (though sparingly) with Cliff and on his own account, and also of turning down an offer from Roy Wood in March to join The Move — not as eccentric an offer as it has often been made out to be, given Wood’s musical direction in the early 1970s (or directions rather: he was immensely versatile and resourceful). On top of that, because of his success on the Cliff TV shows, Hank was offered the chance to record a ‘trial’ set of six TV shows of his own. He would be the host/ star and the shows were to be a mixture of music from Hank, music from guests, interviews (chat show element!) and comedy sketches. The writers were to be Sid Green & Dick Hills of Morecambe & Wise fame (this was pre-Eddie Braben). A pilot script was written but never recorded, as Hank Marvin himself was to make an unexpected move in the course of 1971, in tandem with Bruce Welch and John Farrar: see Introduction to 1973 below. “I could have become,” mused Hank, “a sort of Victor Borge of the guitar!” October 1970 LP Columbia SCX 6420 Shades Of Rock 226 We come now to The Shadows’ Album that most, it seems, love to hate, or simply ignore, though it sold tolerably well at the time, making No.30 in the charts.

  • Musicophilia Les-Bibliothc3a9caires A-Library-Music-Collection Booklet.Pdf
Les Bibliothécaires A Library Music Collection For music obsessives, discoveries usually come one or two at a time--a new artist here and again, maybe a new corner of a subgenre now and then. But discovering Library Music amplifies that many times over: it’s not really a genre, not a scene, but rather a whole mirror world, familiar and yet unknown, reminiscent of the one we spend our lives in, but shifted and skewed in incredible ways. Most of the ingredients are recognizable from the funk, jazz, rock, disco, pop and folk musics we love--bass guitar, drums, bongos, piano, organs, brass instruments, synthesizers--but the proportions are different, the emphasis a bit unusual, the production a little alien. The beats are punchier, the bass more emphatically bouncing, the guitars often secondary, as if from a reality where harpsichords were one of the more popular garage band instruments. And then there are the strings, sometimes orchestral, often at a chamber scale, soaring above and around in a dance with the drums and the bass, not just reemphasizing the chord changes like we expect when they show up in pop music. If you love ‘Melody Nelson,’ or “Apache,” or golden-age Hip-Hop breakbeat samples, you’ve had a glimpse of this world’s sounds echoing into the regular music world, and you’re in for a treat. Library Music, and Library musicians in the late 60s, the 70s, and the early 80s seem to have collectively decided they weren’t going to take sides in a world of ever-increasing possibilities: they were often classically trained, and many clearly spent their formative years in the jazz world, and yet rather than being snobs about it, they jumped head-first into funk and psychedelic rock and pop and crazy tape music and new electronic gadgets.

Written about The Dollar Kid Dollar Kid is living The Butterfield’s brought in some of the first sheep to the Big Horn Basin, they were from Utah arriving on Owl Creek in the Fall of 1890. John Lynn had come in to the area around Lovell in the summer of 1890 from Montana. Lynns brought in two big bands of ewes of about 3000 each. All of these sheep were a coarse wooled sheep, Cotswold and Lincoln. They looked big but sheared a big light weight fleece. They were easy to shear, no wrinkles or wool on the legs or belly. They didn’t settle down to feed like the smaller finer wooled sheep that came in. David Dickie came in here to look over the ranch in 1890, so the next year 1891, he and Pete Brotherson brought in two bands of Merino and Ramboulettes ewes. They summered over on the head of Crow Creek and came to Gooseberry in the Fall of 1891.
