Brazilian Photographer Wins Manchester’s Creative Tourist, The Art of the City competition Submitted by: prandsocial Monday, 1 March 2010 Manchester Museums Consortium campaign Creative Tourist (http://creativetourist.com) today announced the winner of its open photography competition The Art of the City (http://www.flickr.com/groups/theartofthecity), which received over 1200 entries via its Flickr group. Winning image STOP (http://www.flickr.com/photos/sousa/4140886423/in/pool-theartofthecity) by Brazilian photographer Luciano Bernardes, was a unanimous choice by the judges who called the image, “inspirational – what street photography is all about”. Luciano, 32, developed an interest in photography around seven years ago and went on to undertake a bachelors in photography, he now also runs a small business as a photo retoucher. The winning photo was one of several he submitted to the competition and was taken while he was working as a photography intern, for an NGO in San Paulo. Explaining he said, “To me this image represents my feeling of being on the street, before the picture I liked to sit still watching the street, now I take the camera for a walk with me”. Commenting on the competition Susie Stubbs, editor of Creative Tourist (http://creativetourist.com) and one of the three judges, said, “We were blown over by the quality of the entries, it was incredibly difficult to choose a winner and runners-up but we all loved Luciano’s image for the way it captures the essence of everyday city life”.
