Whiteside County Illinois Adds Devnet Wedge E-Government Solution WHITESIDE COUNTY ILLINOIS ADDS DEVNET WEDGE E-GOVERNMENT SOLUTION DEVNET is pleased to announce that Whiteside County, Illinois, has chosen to implement the DEVNET wEdge e- government solution. Whiteside County Treasurer Darlene Hook and Whiteside County Supervisor of Assessments Robin Brands have selected wEdge to make the county’s property tax data available to the public. Whiteside County currently uses the DEVNET Edge® Property Tax Assessment Administration & Billing and Collection solutions. DEVNET is gratified that the county is adding yet another of the Edge® solutions. wEdge is DEVNET’s e-government solution for providing property tax information to public and county users, and it is becoming the leading property information platform in the industry. wEdge provides a powerful yet easy-to-use interface for searching and viewing all properties within a jurisdiction. With minimal effort, users can create powerful queries, browse matching properties, and view details about each property. “Whiteside County is pleased to announce a new website for accessing online assessment and tax information,” commented Hook and Brands. “This will be a great tool for title searchers, tax preparers, and residents. The county was established on January 16, 1836. It is the namesake of General Samuel Whiteside who, as a major, fought in the Indian Wars in this section of the country from 1812 until the close of the Black Hawk War. The county also boasts the birthplace of President Ronald Reagan (in Tampico), the Albany Mounds State Historic Site, and a segment of one of the first continental highways -- U.S. Route 30, also known as the Lincoln Highway. Morrison, the county seat, is centrally located on U.S. Route 30. The communities of Sterling and Rock Falls, located 15 miles to the east, comprise most of the county's 60,000 population. Others were founded later in the 19th century. For American traders traveling west on the Santa Fe Trail in the 1830s and 1840s, this was one of several entry points into Mexico. The Ar- kansas River to the northeast was the actual border with Mexico, but until Las Vegas was founded in 1835, San Miquel del Vado was the first settlement of any note that travelers encountered. Here customs inspec- tors examined the wagons and levied heavy import taxes, to be paid in Santa Fe, against the goods they carried. Fees were charged according to the number of wagons in a train, so traders hoping to lessen the tax bur- den repacked their goods into fewer wagons before entering San Miguel del Vado. Aware of this, Mexican soldiers joined the trains as far away as Las Ve- gas, twenty-five miles to the east, and under guard, escorted them into the settlement. The Mexican military had been stationed in the area since the 1820s, offering protection from Indians to those Mexican pioneers settling the San Miguel del Vado Spanish land grant.

    James Semple 1843 © Illinois Supreme Court Historic Preservation Commission Image courtesy of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library Green County, Kentucky native James Semple served part of one term on the Illinois Supreme Court, before accepting an appointment by Governor Thomas Ford to the United States Senate. Born on January 5, 1798, the eldest of nine children of John Walker and Lucy Robertson Semple, James received a basic education in Greensburg, Kentucky, schools, supplemented by legal courses in Louisville. In 1814, at age sixteen, he joined the Kentucky militia and became active in Kentucky politics as early as 1817.1 A lifelong Democrat, Semple moved to Edwardsville, Illinois, in 1818, but soon returned to Kentucky. In 1820, he married Ellen Duff Green, sister of journalist and Democratic politician Duff Green. The couple moved to Chariton, Missouri, where Semple served as assistant postmaster and then land office commissioner, while also commanding a regiment of the Missouri militia. After the death of his wife, Semple returned to his home state, resumed the study of law, and was admitted to the Kentucky bar.2 In 1828, he again moved to Edwardsville, where he maintained a successful law practice. “He was diligent and careful,” wrote John M. Palmer, “and, being a man of magnificent presence and fine manners, he rose rapidly to distinction.”3 2 During the 1831-1832 Black Hawk War in northwestern Illinois, Semple served on the staff of General Samuel Whiteside. In late summer 1832, he won election to the Illinois House of Representatives from Madison County, beginning a long record of public service.

HALL: Friends Like These: The United States’ Indian Allies in the Black Hawk War, 1832 (Under the direction of R. Don Higginbotham.) “Friends Like These” examines the decision by elements of the Menominee, Dakota, Potawatomi, and Ho Chunk tribes to ally with the United States government during the Black Hawk War of 1832. Because this conflict is usually depicted as a land- grab by ravenous settlers and the war occurred within two years of the passage of the Indian Removal Act, the military participation of these tribes seems incongruous. This work seeks to determine why various bands of these tribes cooperated with the U.S. Army when such alliance seemed inimical to the interests of their respective tribes. Moreover, it explores the extent to which the Americans conceived of themselves as allies to the Indians while assessing the consequences of this alliance for each of the tribes involved. This study finds that the Indians participated in the Black Hawk War to fulfill their own wartime objectives, and that in so doing they sought to apply familiar forms to the new situation that unfolded in the years after the War of 1812.

    Library of Congress Abraham Lincoln in the Black Hawk War / 118 ABRAHAM LINCOLN IN THE BLACK HAWK WAR. BY ALFRED AUGUSTUS JACKSON. Black Hawk was chief of a band of Sac Indians. The Sacs are supposed to have come from Canada at an early date.1 They lived for a long time in the vicinity of Rock Island. Their main village was located at the junction of the Rock and Mississippi rivers. This village, Black Hawk says, had existed for over a hundred years.2 In this village, he claims to have been born in 1767.3 The Sacs and Foxes formed a sort of confederacy, and lived together in friendly relations. 1 Life of Ma-ka-ka-tai-me-she-kia-kiak, or Black Hawk, dictated by himself (St. Louis ed., 1882), p. 11; this will be referred to later, as “Black Hawk's Autobiography.” See also, Wis. In 1804,4 a treaty was made with the Sac and Fox Indians at St. Louis, by Gen. The tribes were not immediately removed from the lands described in the treaty, but were permitted to live and hunt upon them so long as the government owned them.
