WORLD ORT '70For70' Mission to Israel WORLD ORT ‘70for70’ Mission to Israel October 18-21, 2018 1 ort.org This October, we are celebrating Israel’s 70th birthday with a unique World ORT Mission: the “70 for 70” 70 Mission to Israel – one participant for every year of the country’s modern history. World ORT is celebrating the 70th Anniversary of the State of Israel with a unique mission to Israel this October. A highlight of this year’s ORT calendar, the mission will give you the opportunity to experience first-hand the ways in which we are impacting lives through education. Site visits will highlight the transformative effects of our work on both individuals and communities across the country and will show you how ORT activities are building positive futures for Israel’s next generation. You will meet with World ORT Kadima Mada students, teachers and administrators and hear first-hand about the impact of our work. 70Special events include a private meeting with Reuven Rivlin, President of the State of Israel; a personal tour of Ben Gurion’s home given by his grandson Dr. Moshe Ben Eliezer; a festive dinner and behind-the-scenes tour of the Tel Aviv Museum of Art; a visit to an Israeli Air Force base led by one of Israel’s top military commanders; and a trip to the Netiv Ha’asara, a moshav near Gaza, to see first-hand how Israel is using innovative new technologies to defend its borders. This JTA op-ed begins with a mention of Lilly’s cousin, Reuven Rivlin: Anat Hoffman After Knesset Speaker Reuven Rivlin (a leader in the Likud party) visited 17-year-old Jamal Julany, one of the victims of the racist attack in Zion Square he apologized to the victim: “We are sorry… It is hard to see you hospitalized because of an inconceivable act… What happened is the responsibility of every leader and Member of Knesset.” …. An honest evaluation will reveal that this unprovoked attack on three Arab youths by dozens of Israeli teenagers is part of a phenomenon much broader than the character of these youths. It is a result of the chronology of prolonged government tolerance towards Jewish religious extremism and its manifestations and of the Israeli government’s tacit acceptance of racist incitement towards Israel’s Arab minority by certain members of Knesset and a number of extreme Orthodox rabbis. Every religion has its extremists. Judaism is no different. The leading rabbinic figure in this raging culture war is the Chief Rabbi of Safed, Shmuel Eliyahu. He has repeatedly called Israel’s 1.2 million Arab citizens “the enemy.” He urged Jews not to rent or sell apartments to Arabs, and he claims all Arabs have a violent nature. Most observers assess that, in the context of Israel's political system, Netanyahu will begin a fifth term as prime minister (1996-1999, 2009-present) after assembling a coalition government with his traditional right-leaning and ultra-Orthodox partners (see Figure 1). Netanyahu's victory came despite a significant challenge from the new Blue and White party—led by former top general Benny Gantz and prominent politician Yair Lapid (a former finance minister)—and a February announcement that Israel's attorney general would probably indict Netanyahu for alleged corruption. The Israeli election and government formation process has implications for Israeli leadership and issues relevant to U.S. policy. Whether the attorney general indicts Netanyahu could depend on potential legislation in the new Knesset, and if indictments come, Netanyahu's coalition partners may determine whether he continues as prime minister or is replaced. In turn, how Netanyahu responds to his partners' policy demands could affect Israeli decisions on key matters of U.S. interest, especially possible Israeli unilateral moves to annex settlements in the West Bank.     Ilan Pappé Zionism as Colonialism: A Comparative View of Diluted Colonialism in Asia and Africa Introduction: The Reputation of Colonialism Ever since historiography was professionalized as a scientific discipline, historians have consid- ered the motives for mass human geographical relocations. In the twentieth century, this quest focused on the colonialist settler projects that moved hundreds of thousands of people from Europe into America, Asia, and Africa in the pre- ceding centuries. The various explanations for this human transit have changed considerably in recent times, and this transformation is the departure point for this essay. The early explanations for human relocations were empiricist and positivist; they assumed that every human action has a concrete explanation best found in the evidence left by those who per- formed the action. The practitioners of social his- tory were particularly interested in the question, and when their field of inquiry was impacted by trends in philosophy and linguistics, their conclusion differed from that of the previous generation. The research on Zionism should be seen in light of these historiographical developments.
