Curriculum Vitae: James Lancel McElhinney

James Lancel McElhinney is a public scholar, curator, visual artist, author, publisher and oral historian. In November of 2017, Needlewatcher Editions published his , a suite of archival prints inspired by expeditionary artists such as John-James Audubon, Joshua Rowley Watson, William Guy Wall, George Catlin and Seth Eastman. McElhinney embarked on new explorations of Philadelphia’s Schuylkill River in 2019. In 2019, he turned his attention to the Rio Grande, as it traverses northern New Mexico.

2008-2016 Art Students League of New York. Consultant to the Exedcutive Director. Acting Academic Coordinator. Developed credit-euqivalency formulas and negotiated numeeous MOUs and artiuculaton agreements with accredited collegs and universities. Participated in new program development, including apprenticeship and mentorship programs, notable writing the prospectus for M2M: Models to Monuments, and strategic plans for the League Rockland campus, and forming partnerships with notable institutions like The Prince’s Drawing School, London, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art. 1998-2003: University of Colorado at Denver. Departmental head of academic advising. Program head of Drawing and Painting. Oversaw safety compliance renovations to existing studio facilities, and the creaton of a new woodshop. Participated in national job searches. Chaired a national job search that filled five positions. Service on the university Budget Priorities Committee. 2000-2002: University of Colorado at Denver. Study Abroad Program, Feltre, Belluno Province,Veneto. Italy. Created and successfully ran a program with roughly twenty participants from several colleges and universities. Also acting on behalf of the Consul General of Italy, McElhinney assembled and led a delegation to Trento to sign a sister-city agreement with Colorado Springs. 9/11 changed the paradigm. Led 5 national searches, served on CAM Curriculum Committee; 1998-99; Faculty Assembly (University) 1999-2000, Academic Policies Committee (College) 2000-,Budget Priorities Committee (University), 2001; Recipient of College of Arts and Media Award for Teaching Excellence in 1999. 1994-1998: Visiting Artist; EAST CAROLINA UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF ART (Originally hired under a terminal one-year "Visiting Artist" contract which was renewed three times). Courses taught: Foundations Drawing, Figure Drawing and Color Design; Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced and Graduate level Painting and Drawing; Painting Survey, Materials and Methods. Served on Graduate and Undergraduate thesis committees; Served on committees reviewing submissions to the Painting major; Participation in developing and expanding overseas programs; Participation in developing proposals for the renovation of an off-campus facility in a former cotton mill in Edenton, NC; Established ECU's student participation in the Yale "Norfolk" program and the Vermont Studio Center, placing students in both programs. Served as faculty advisor to student art guilds; organizing events; arranging for private donations of art materials. Service to the University includes--Co-chair of the ECU Second Annual Civil War Symposium "Emblems of Valor"; Organizer and curator of “Past Valor, New Battles", an exhibition held in conjunction with the symposium that featured contemporary artists and artisans whose works explore the Civil War in terms of reverence, irony and metaphor juxtaposed against art made by soldiers who fought in the conflict. "Visiting Artist" to the town of Ayden, NC, occupying the Old Town Hall as a studio residence, exploring new ways of forging useful links between the university and surrounding communities. The Ayden residency passes to the next "Visiting Artist", providing the university with a very attractive recruiting tool for the position. 1995: RICHMOND ARTS COUNCIL and HANOVER COUNTY, VIRGINIA, PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICT "Partners in the Arts" program grant Collaborating with writer Ben Carlos Cleary in team-teaching middle-school and high-school students, focusing on aesthetic, historical and contemporary issues inscribed upon the terrain --former battlefields where the students and their families live. Programs included classroom lectures, discussions, and workshops in both the class-room and the field. 1991-1993: Instructor (MIAD did not use a system of ranking) MILWAUKEE INSTITUTE OF ART AND DESIGN Taught all levels of Drawing and Painting and one course in Illustration. Curated two exhibitions; "The Body", 1992; and "Place", 1993; in the Frederick Layton Gallery. Organized two visiting artist visits: Frank Hyder (1991) and Bernard Chaet (1992).
