Golf Australia Vision 2025 Last week Jacqui and Ladies President, Jan Threadgold, attended the presentation of Golf Australia’s “Vision 2025”. Vision 2025 is based around increasing women’s and girls’ participation in golf at all levels. The presentation focused on ensuring Clubs are adhering to the Equal Opportunity Act by providing equal rights to course access and events, along with embracing different forms of golf and membership options to increase participation of the female demographic. Ideas were also discussed surrounding the concept of providing different membership options to cater for different lifestyles rather than the traditional 7 day membership model, such as single day memberships or part-year memberships.

FROM COURSE SUB COMMITTEE…from Peter Shaw (Vice President, Course)

New Tee Block Signs are now being progressively installed to each main tee block and separate red/yellow tee block. Directional signs will then follow in due course.

Current Tee Signs for Sale expressions of interest are invited from club members who wish to purchase a used one owner Tee Block Sign. We are only asking $50.00 for each sign. So far, we have sold the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 6th, 7th, 9th, 10th, 14th and 18th. If you are interested please email [email protected] or enquire at the office.

New sprinklers at each green have now been installed. This has been another factor in the improvement of localised dry spot incidence on greens and surrounds. There is little maintenance required with these sprinklers. They always pop up and retract as they should, and the rotation is virtually guaranteed.

The last month has been quite interesting in terms of weather. We went through a heat wave that included the highest maximum on record at 46o C. On the whole the golf course handled the extreme conditions very well. Again we acknowledge the wetting agent dosing unit for reducing the localised dry spot that would normally result during extremely hot weather. With the hot weather came the wind. Both gully winds and prevailing southerlies have been producing vast quantities of bark and leaf debris to be cleaned up on a daily basis. The winds have also caused some drying issues on the southern sides of some fairways, greens and tees.

Working Bee was held on Thursday 7th March and our dedicated group of volunteers assisted ground staff trim low limbs on the tree line between the 7th and 8th fairways. This work has been delayed a number of times due to the hot weather. We have been slowly working our way around the course with only the LHS 7th, 4th, 16th to go. We will also re-visit the 2nd to try and clean up the mess left after trees were hacked under the power lines.

The Course Sub-Committee is looking for your feedback on any issue any time that relates to the Course. Have a question, a suggestion or criticism, please write to [email protected]. Any correspondence will be treated confidentially.

From the Captain…Dean Nobbs

Alex (Woodstock) Curtin has been consistently shooting in the 60’s and can’t remember the last time he shot in the 70’s.

McMillan Shield Update Our Juniors have played their third round of McMillan Shield, after losing two rounds due to heat. The team consisting of Louis Pretty, Oscar McDonnell, Olivia Nobbs, James Hastie, Harry Percey, Shawn Yow, Michael Drexler, Lauren Voda, Nathan Russell and Akira Huang have all played very well. Many of the McMillan Shield team played their first 18 holes in the first match of the season against Glenelg. The team had a fantastic match against Royal Adelaide at Thaxted, coming away with a well-earned half. The team then played Grange at West Lakes and were narrowly defeated 4 games to 3. Thanks to Louis Pretty for filling in at late notice. Good luck for the next few rounds of the season.

The Issues Surrounding our Cart Policy for Heat The Policy: Carts will be banned from use on the course if the Adelaide forecast maximum is 38 degrees C or over. This relates to the BOM forecast after 7pm for Adelaide, for the following day. This is a guide and the Superintendent has discretion over banning carts

Why do we have this Policy? There are multiple factors that contribute to the reasoning behind a cart ban. Some of these affect all courses in our climate, but some are specific to our site. Some clubs go to the expense of purpose building cart paths for good reason. • We apply less water than the turf requirement. Our club has a limited water supply and to ensure we have enough water to keep our turf alive for the whole season we must 'ration' for the duration. We are consistently applying around 70% of the turf requirement to our fairways; enough to keep good colour but not enough to provide insurance against traffic in extreme weather. • When we experience extreme weather the plant turgor (resilience or rigidity within the plant relating to moisture content) is affected. The evaporation-transpiration rate (water loss from the soil and plants) increases markedly and compounds the moisture deficit in the soil and plant. This causes the plant to reach wilt-point (loss of turgor) sooner than in normal circumstances. Once the turf has reached this point it is particularly vulnerable to traffic damage. Tyres from vehicles naturally flatten the leaves exposing more leaf surface to direct sunlight, and with no remaining resilience within the plant those leaves remain in that exposed position and effectively 'cook' in the hot sun. We have all seen the scarring that results from traffic after a hot day. In addition, there is a direct heat transference from the hot tyre to the turf plant. • Another factor that exacerbates the points above is the efficiency of our irrigation system on fairways. We are applying 70% of turf requirement through a system that is operating at less than 60% efficiency by design and age. This means that uniformity is poor. The net result is that many areas across fairways are receiving less than 50% of requirement consistently. This factor is hidden somewhat when we are receiving rainfall at times during summer, but becomes very evident during long dry spells. The turf loses the even colour and becomes quite patchy. Even if we had enough water we would struggle to apply 100% of requirement within the night time watering window. • Many of our green surrounds have cool season turf varieties. These are more vulnerable to drought and heat stress, and it is particularly important to manage traffic in those areas during extreme weather.

I understand that there is an increasing pressure from members and visitors to use carts during hot weather but I ask the question, should we give in to this pressure to the detriment of our main asset?

WHAT A HARVEST

The “assistant to the head gardener” recently undertook the difficult task of removing deceased shrubs from the creek area adjacent to the 2nd, 14th & 18th tees. Wow! “I bet the old fellow fell down that slippery slope?” Of course he did, many times…but he is always careful to spring to his feet so quickly that no one can say for sure. The photo shows just a few of the balls harvested from the area. He wondered; “How could you possibly hit a ball in here?”

He wishes to thank our staff for their help in removing the rubbish.

RULE of the month…explanation …from John Ward

Question: WHEN IS A BALL HOLED? Answer: When a ball is at rest in the hole after a stroke and the entire ball is below the surface of the putting green.

EXCEPT FOR THE SITUATION BELOW RULE 13.2 The Flagstick Rule 13.2c Ball Resting Against Flagstick in Hole If a player’s ball comes to rest against the flagstick left in the hole: ▪ If any part of the ball is in the hole below the surface of the putting green, the ball is treated as holed even if the entire ball is not below the surface. ▪ If no part of the ball is in the hole below the surface of the putting green: *The ball is not holed and must be played as it lies. *If the flagstick is removed and the ball moves (whether it falls into the hole or moves away from the hole), there is no penalty and the ball must be replaced on the lip of the hole (see Rule 14.2) ------

RULE 1 Introduces central principles of the game for the player. How many times have you been asked by you playing partner:- “Do I get relief here?” or “Can I take a drop?” More often than not the player knows that he is not entitled to take any relief but he asks his playing partner anyway in the forlorn hope that he may not know the rules or that he may be kind to him and allow him drop his ball in a nicer area than where his ball lies. The player may gain an unfair advantage over other players in the same competition by playing his ball from a more favourable position. Rule 1 states: • “Play the course as he or she finds it, and • Play the ball as it lies”

It is a simple but essential Rule that means you must play the ball from where it lies unless of course the rules allow you to take relief. All players must be aware that they are responsible for applying their own penalties if they breach a Rule, so that they cannot gain any potential advantage over their opponent in match play or any other players in stroke play. The Rules of Golf and the Local Rules, published at each golf club, are established to ensure that all players play in competitions under the same rules and conditions. MAKE SURE YOU DON’T TAKE AN UNFAIR ADVANTAGE.

A WORD FROM THE GIRLS…from Jan Threadgold (VP Women’s Golf)

The 2019 Opening Day held on Tuesday March 5th was a great success. 80 players enjoyed a cooler day with a 9-hole shotgun Stableford competition followed by a meeting and introduction to our winter competition. Thanks to President Rob Dowling, Manager Jacqui Baker and VP of Course Peter Shaw for their informative talks to the group. Captain, Angela Beaty, highlighted the 2019 format and declared the Season open.

The latest round of Give Golf a Go Clinics (see photo below), run by Dylan Thomas from the Golf Shop, have commenced but have been interrupted by more hot weather.

Championship qualifying begins on Monday 1st April with the final day to be held on Friday 12th April. Entries close Tuesday 26th March.

Our Gala Day is to be held on Thursday 2nd May with an 8.30 shotgun Pinehurst competition. The cost is $25 for members and $30 for non-members which includes golf and a 2-course meal. The committee is proposing to have a trading table and look forward to any contributions you can donate to this cause. Graham Rugless from Happy Valley Foodland is once again sponsoring our Gala Day. The Women’s Committee are proud to be associated with Graham and appreciate his continued sponsorship of this day. Please show your support by visiting Happy Valley Foodland when you can to purchase your groceries.

Pennant and Cleek matches commence on Monday 6th May. The following Team Managers have been appointed. A4 Pennant – Joan Coles. Cleek 1 – Pam Baverstock. Hickory – Angela Beaty. Nomads – Bev Cross. If you can assist Bev in late July and early August, please contact Angela.

Rose and Wayne Corbett have agreed to tend the garden by the putting green. They also look after the ‘petunia bed’ by the 1st tee. I am looking to have a wooden picket made up with Rose Wilton’s name to confirm which rose in this garden was donated by her family.

We have organised a new foot scraper to go outside the women’s locker room ready for winter which should be available within 2 weeks. Thanks to Peter Shaw for his help.
