He is famous for being extremely tenacious and 'fighting with his heart', as his trainer Mickey Goldmill famously intones. COPAS—Current Objectives of Postgraduate American Studies 15.1 (2014) “You Ought to Stop Trying Because You Had Too Many Birthdays?”—The Making of an Aged Hero in Rocky Balboa Nina Schnieder ABSTRACT: This article deals with one of Hollywood’s most popular (sport) action heroes, Rocky Balboa, who, after thirty years of screen history, increasingly has to face the obstacles of age in the last installment of the franchise. Although cultural assumptions seem to contradict the combination of aging and sports hero, the article claims that the athletic protagonist Rocky Balboa is actually perceived as a true American action hero by the depiction of his progressed age as a motivation to once again “go the distance.” The article focuses on the aspects of work and the aging male body and it aims to show how the Rocky series has always dealt with the issue of male aging. KEYWORDS: age/aging; Rocky Balboa; boxing; work; male body Introduction When in 2006 Sylvester Stallone announced to release a sixth and presumably last Rocky movie—written and directed by himself—critics as well as countless studio bosses advised him not to do so, because at sixty they did not picture him as a “magnet for young moviegoers” (Weiner). Before the movie was released, audiences laughed at the trailers and critics ridiculed the project as a joke, as they seemed to watch, according to Philippa Gates, “a vanity play to make an aging star feel vital and relevant to a new generation,” and they named it a ridiculous attempt to live up to former successes.

Newfield, Jack. "Stallone Vs. Springsteen." Disclaimer: If you are offended by this piece, STOP READING and read the alternative assignment. This piece has been edited for language. 1. Bruce Springsteen and Sylvester Stallone are the two great working-class heroes of American mass culture. Springsteen had the best-selling album of 1985 and Stallone had the second most successful movie. On the surface, they share stunning similarities of biceps, bandannas, American flags, Vietnam themes, praise from President Reagan, and uplifting feelings of national pride. Bumper sticker proclaim, BRUCE--THE RAMBO OF ROCK. 2. But beneath the surface--and between the lines--these two American heroes of the eighties are sending opposite messages. They are subtly pulling the 18-to-35-year-old generation toward two competing visions of the American future. 3. Stallone's Rocky and Rambo films--especially the latter--are about violence and revenge in a context of fantasy. Rambo never pays a price in body bags or pain or blood or doubt or remorse or fear. The enemy is stereotyped and therefore dehumanized. The emotions Stallone liberates are hostility and aggression: Audiences come out of the theater wanting to kick some Commie *** in Nicaragua. 4. By contrast, the essential human feeling Springsteen liberates is empathy--compassion for the human man trapped in the dead-end world of the hourly wage. The realistic words of Springsteen's best songs are about the hurt of unemployed workers; about reconciliation with estranged parents through understanding their lives; about staying hopeful even though experience falls short of the American dream. 5.

  • The Construction of Soviet 'Otherness' in Rocky Iv
GOOD VS. EVIL: THE CONSTRUCTION OF SOVIET ‘OTHERNESS’ IN ROCKY IV JOAQUÍN SARAVIA INSTITUTO FRANKLIN–UAH Both the Vietnam War disaster (1955-1975) and the Watergate scandal (1972-1974) had a negative impact in the self-perception of US citizens. As many other cultural mani- festations, American films portrayed a sense of defeat in the Cold War context. That was the case of Rocky (1976) and Rocky II (1979), both patriotic and propagandistic calls to individual participation in the national renaissance (Hoff 1999, 187). Aiming at cheering up the nation, the advent of the Reagan administration brought big changes in the configuration of the US collective imaginary; pre-established ideas regarding the Soviet Union as an evil empire, a conservative reconstruction of society and new fictional heroes to save the nation were brought forth. Hirshberg states that, during the 80's, the screenwriter of the Rocky series, Sylvester Stallone, supported the admin- istration's philosophy of “peace through strength” both openly and actively (1993, 104). In this regard, the most explicit example of Stallone’s commitment to the cause is the ideological message expressed through Rocky IV (1985), in which an exhibition bout ends in tragedy as Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) dies after boxing Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren). Consequently, Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) accepts Drago’s challenge to compete in Russia. For the first time, the hero does not fight for love, wealth, pride or honor. Instead, Rocky becomes a soldier who fights a cultural war for the survival of the American Way of Life and liberal democracy. Paralleling the polit- ical developments of the time, a sports drama film was used as a cultural weapon in the Cold War struggle.

  • The De-Italianization of Rocky Balboa: the Italian Stallion´S Path to Becoming an American Hero
THE DE-ITALIANIZATION OF ROCKY BALBOA: THE ITALIAN STALLION´S PATH TO BECOMING AN AMERICAN HERO JUAN RODRÍGUEZ SANTOS UNIVERSITY OF ALCALÁ If you polled Americans to identify which character in all cinema best represents American values, it is quite likely that many would choose Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone). Without a doubt, the image of Rocky fighting with the colors of the American flag and defeating the Soviet boxer Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren) is already a Hollywood icon. In Rocky Road: The Hero's Journey of Rocky Balboa Through the “Rocky” Anthology (Salyer Jr. 2009), the author describes Rocky Balboa as one of the greatest heroes the film industry has produced. Rocky is a self-made, hard-working, humble, and disciplined man who, above all else, loves his family and friends. Curiously, this perception of an all-American Rocky Balboa is mostly associated with his depiction in Rocky IV (1985) rather than the Rocky Balboa that appears in the first two installments of the saga. In Rocky (1976) and Rocky II (1979), the character still exhibits many of the heroic qualities outlined above. However, an in-depth analysis of these films reveals significantly different characterizations of Rocky across the same, classic franchise. Several studies have dissected the Rocky saga. Most notably, Hollywood Italians: Dagos, Palookas, Romeos, Wise Guys and Sopranos (Bondanella 2004) explores the influence of Rocky Balboa as a faithful representation of the character of the Italian American boxer in Hollywood. The plot of Rocky centers on the story of Rocky Balboa, a humble boxer of Italian American descent who works for the mafia and is, by chance, named the new contender for the world heavyweight championship.

  • Utilizing Film to Teach Leadership: an Analysis of Miracle, Rocky IV, and Lincoln
Utilizing Film to Teach Leadership 143 Utilizing Film to Teach Leadership: An Analysis of Miracle, Rocky IV, and Lincoln Alyssa C. Hilby Carrie A. Stephens Christopher T. Stripling University of Tennessee Presenting verbal and visual material can be an effective teaching tool for learners who are being introduced to new leadership material. Film was selected as the multimedia outlet to engage an individual’s critical thinking skills while demonstrating different leadership components. This study analyzed three films with the intent of assisting a leadership educator in the process of teaching (a) leading teams, (b) leading change, and (c) transformational leadership. It was concluded that Miracle (O’Connor & Ciardi, 2004) was ideal for teaching about leading teams because it exposed the nuances of team dynamics. Additionally, Rocky IV (Stallone, 1985) was ideal for demonstrating leading change because the movie focused on breaking cultural barriers and highlighted how individuals prepare for significant change. Finally, Lincoln (Lupi, Skoll, King, & Spielberg, 2012) was a valuable film in teaching transformational leadership because the leader in the film was successful at changing the mindsets of people. Keywords: leadership, teaching, film analysis Introduction The Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communications (ALEC) 303: Classic Figures in Leadership course is taught every fall to teach undergraduates about historical leadership events and/or individuals and compare those to current leadership events and/or individuals. The course is taught by instructors utilizing film. The use of film as a teaching tool provides students the opportunity to evaluate leadership via both auditory and visual messages (Mayer, 2001). The purpose of this study was to analyze three different films Miracle (O’Connor & Ciardi, 2004), Rocky IV (Stallone, 1985), and Lincoln (Lupi, Skoll, King, & Spielberg, 2012) in the ALEC 303 course to produce teaching information for instructors of leadership.
