The Wrong Twin By Harry Leon Wilson 1921. TO HELEN AND LEON CHAPTER I CHAPTER II CHAPTER III CHAPTER IV CHAPTER V CHAPTER VI CHAPTER VII CHAPTER VIII CHAPTER IX CHAPTER X CHAPTER XI CHAPTER XII CHAPTER XIII CHAPTER XIV CHAPTER XV CHAPTER XVI CHAPTER XVII CHAPTER XVIII CHAPTER XIX CHAPTER XX CHAPTER XXI CHAPTER XXII CHAPTER I An establishment in Newbern Center, trading under the name of the Foto Art Shop, once displayed in its window a likeness of the twin sons of Dave Cowan. Side by side, on a lavishly fringed plush couch, they confronted the camera with differing aspects. One sat forward with a decently, even blandly, composed visage, nor had he meddled with his curls. His mate sat back, scowling, and fought the camera to the bitter end. His curls, at the last moment, had been mussed by a raging hand. This was in the days of an earlier Newbern, when the twins were four and Winona Penniman began to be their troubled mentor—troubled lest they should not grow up to be refined persons; a day when Dave Cowan, the widely travelled printer, could rightly deride its citizenry as small-towners; a day when the Whipples were Newbern's sole noblesse and the Cowan twins not yet torn asunder. The little town lay along a small but potent river that turned a few factory wheels with its eager current, and it drew sustenance from the hill farms that encircled it for miles about. You had to take a dingy way train up to the main line if you were going the long day's journey to New York, so that the Center of the name was often construed facetiously by outlanders.

Male counterparts in similar programs aired by the same network openly displayed their extraordinariness and were portrayed as having considerable and usually uncontested agency. These alternative depictions of differential hiding and secrecy in sitcoms are far from speculative; these ideas were synthesized from analyses of sitcom episodes, commentary in magazine articles, and web-based discussions of these series. Content analysis, industrial analysis (including interviews with industry personnel), and critical discourse analysis utilizing the multi-faceted lens of feminist theory throughout is used in this study to demonstrate a unique decade in children’s programming about super powered girls.

  • Bratz, Bffs, Princesses and Popstars: Femininity and Celebrity in Tween Popular Culture
Bratz, BFFs, Princesses and Popstars: Femininity and Celebrity in Tween Popular Culture Melanie Kennedy Submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) School of Film, Television and Media Studies University of East Anglia December 2012 ©This copy of the thesis has been supplied on condition that anyone who consults it is understood to recognise that its copyright rests with the author and that use of any information derived there from must be in accordance with current UK Copyright Law. In addition, any quotation or extract must include full attribution. 2 ABSTRACT The last decade has seen a dramatic increase in media output aimed at “tweens” (preadolescent girls), and the expansion more broadly of tween popular culture. This exclusively female preadolescent consumer demographic is seen to emerge alongside a heightened visibility of girls within popular culture since the mid-1990s, and continuing anxieties about girlhood in this intensely mediated environment. However, this burgeoning field has yet to be matched in academic attention. This thesis offers a timely examination of mainstream tween films, television programmes, celebrities and extra-texts from 2004 onwards, including “princess” narratives The Prince & Me (2004, 2006, 2008, 2010) and A Cinderella Story (2004, 2008, 2011), and Disney Channel programming and Original Movies, Hannah Montana (2006-2011) and Camp Rock (2008, 2010). It forges a dialogue between postfeminism, film and television, celebrity, and the figure of the tween, in order to examine how the tween is both constructed and addressed by the films and television programmes that make up tween popular culture. Tweenhood is a discursive construction emerging in the mid-1990s and coming to cultural prominence in the early twenty-first century.

  • Illegitimate Births in Gloucester, MA, 1855-1894
ILLEGITIMATE BIRTHS IN GLOUCESTER, MA, 1855 – 1894 The term “illegitimacy” is derived from the Latin illegitimus, meaning “not in accordance with the law.” A child is considered illegitimate when it is conceived and born outside of the regulatory sanctions of marriage. In order to facilitate genealogical research the Gloucester, Massachusetts, City Archive department is in the process of building a series of data bases of the births, marriages, and deaths that took place in Gloucester in the last half of the 19th century. As we entered birth information into this data base we wondered what became of those children identified as ‘illegitimate.’ The following is a result of those ruminations. Please note that the figures provided are not conclusive, as during the period 1860 to 1875 the legal status of the child was only sporadically noted in the official records – an interesting fact in and of itself. Also, at the time of this survey, deaths were only available in an easily searchable format for the years between 1851 and 1873. Obtaining the figures from 1874 to 1894 would have consumed more time than was available to this researcher. Nonetheless, certain conclusions can still be drawn from the easily obtainable records. Illegitimate births accounted for less than 1% of the overall births in Gloucester during the thirty-nine years spanned by the survey, and were equally divided between the sexes (108 boys and 107 girls). This figure seems extraordinarily low compared, for instance, to the year 2000 when approximately 26% of all births in Massachusetts were recorded as illegitimate. However, one must take into account various social factors.
