    Journalism and Mass Communication, December 2015, Vol. 5, No. 12, 640-649 doi: 10.17265/2160-6579/2015.12.004 D DAVID PUBLISHING “New” Translations of Japanese Literature: Socio-cultural Impacts on the Japanese Mind* Atsuko Hayakawa Tsuda College, Tokyo, Japan In terms of translation theory today, the essential discussions of “otherness”, coupled with the agenda of bilateral approaches to its untranslatability, are much more intense than ever. The stereotypical images of Japan as something quite alien yet enchanting in Japanese literature, in The Tale of Genji for instance, are drastically different from those in modern novels, where the experience of conflicts with the West in the course of modernization could not be ignored. Shusaku Endo’s Silence for example, paradoxically questions the translatability of Christianity in the historical context of the Japanese mind. By reading some translated texts of Japanese literature, we come to be aware of the essential factors of “otherness” inherent in Japanese culture and language which, in some socio-cultural ways, has had an interesting effect on Japanese minds. With the growing interest in “world literature,” “otherness” and “untranslatability” illuminated in the translations of Japanese literature offer a new perspective with which we can re-think our sense of history of modernization on the one hand; and re-evaluate the uniqueness of Japanese language on the other. The remarkable influence of translators whose mother tongue is not Japanese, but who have an excellent command of the language, enables a new Japanese culture to emerge. This is evident in the works of Arthur Binard, an American poet and translator, who enthusiastically criticizes the Japanese policy of atomic energy in his translations of the Japanese poems after World War II, and in the very inspiring essays on Japanese by Roger Pulvers, an Australian writer and playwright who won prizes for his translations of Kenji Miyazawa.

O‘Brien‘s Theological Issues in 20th and 21st Century Fiction class in 2008, and the Roman Catholic Church‘s Year of the Priest which began in 2009 and ended in 2010. It was born out of a desire to study the character of the Catholic priest in literary works of fiction in order to learn new ways of understanding them and the God they serve in a rapidly changing world. Much has already been written about priests in the Western hemisphere in works such as Graham Greene‘s The Power and the Glory and Georges Bernanos‘ The Diary of a Country Priest but much less is known of books about priests from other parts of the globe. Through a process of elimination, it was decided to consult the works of the revered Shusaku Endo because he is considered by many scholars to be Japan‘s, if not Asia‘s, foremost Catholic writer. Hanson, Ph.D. Mentor: Frederick Ruf, Ph.D. ABSTRACT In Frederick Ruf’s recently published book Bewildered Travel, he theorizes that travelers set out specifically to seek confusion or bewilderment and that this makes travel – all travel – religious. Ruf set forth his admittedly idiosyncratic view of travel and religion in the Introduction of his book: Leaving home, stepping into the way that will lead us away, far away, walking among strangers, being stunned, getting lost – these are religious behaviors. (Ruf 2007, 4) Shusaku Endo, one of the most important Japanese writers of fiction in the post-war period, has an unusual background – he was born in Japan, raised in China, educated partly in France and converted to Catholicism at age eleven. Many of his fictional works are based on the experience of travel. These include his masterpiece, Silence, and also The Samurai, Wonderful Fool and Deep River. Endo apparently uses travel as a mechanism to explore the conflicts, confusion and alienation that occur when East meets West and vice versa. Ruf’s book focuses on Western and primarily American authors. This raises the question of whether Ruf’s theory of bewildered travel serves as a unifying principle by which one can analyze and better understand the fictional writings of ii Shusaku Endo which have travel as a central thematic element.

Freya Helewise MA by Research November 2012 ABSTRACT The objective of this thesis, Boundless Venus, is to examine consciousness in the works of the contemporary Japanese writer Haruki Murakami. Principally the discussion concerns itself with the unconscious, its conduits, its benefits upon the conscious; which lead to the transformation of the self and structure of the literature. Although the subject has been touched upon before, the conscious and unconscious have previously been examined as exclusive concepts in Murakami. This research will be looking at the recent change in the ‘crossover’ between these concepts, which makes the concepts no longer two mutually exclusive concepts but ‘inclusive concepts’. This is vital to understanding Murakami’s more recent works and the nature of his influence on literature. Boundless Venus explores the entire works of Haruki Murakami, principally his most recent novel 1Q84 (2011) and his novels Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World (1991) and The Wind-up Bird Chronicle (1997).
