State-wide seed conservation strategy for threatened species, threatened communities and biodiversity hotspots Project 033146a Final Report South Coast Natural Resource Management Inc. and Australian Government Natural Heritage Trust July 2008 Prepared by Anne Cochrane Threatened Flora Seed Centre Department of Environment and Conservation Western Australian Herbarium Kensington Western Australia 6983 Summary In 2005 the South Coast Natural Resource Management Inc. secured regional competitive component funding from the Australian Government’s Natural Heritage Trust for a three-year project for the Western Australian Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) to coordinate seed conservation activities for listed threatened species and ecological communities and for Commonwealth identified national biodiversity hotspots in Western Australia (Project 033146). This project implemented an integrated and consistent approach to collecting seeds of threatened and other flora across all regions in Western Australia. The project expanded existing seed conservation activities thereby contributing to Western Australian plant conservation and recovery programs. The primary goal of the project was to increase the level of protection of native flora by obtaining seeds for long term conservation of 300 species. The project was successful and 571 collections were made. The project achieved its goals by using existing skills, data, centralised seed banking facilities and international partnerships that the DEC’s Threatened Flora Seed Centre already had in place. In addition to storage of seeds at the Threatened Flora Seed Centre, 199 duplicate samples were dispatched under a global seed conservation partnership to the Millennium Seed Bank in the UK for further safe-keeping. Herbarium voucher specimens for each collection have been lodged with the State herbarium in Perth, Western Australia. -

LandCorp Denmark East Development Precinct Flora and Fauna Survey October 2016 Executive summary Introduction Through the Royalties for Regions “Growing our South” initiative, the Shire of Denmark has received funding to provide a second crossing of the Denmark River, to upgrade approximately 6.5 km of local roads and to support the delivery of an industrial estate adjacent to McIntosh Road. GHD Pty Ltd (GHD) was commissioned by LandCorp to undertake a biological assessment of the project survey area. The purpose of the assessment was to identify and describe flora, vegetation and fauna within the survey area. The outcomes of the assessment will be used in the environmental assessment and approvals process and will identify the possible need for, and scope of, further field investigations will inform environmental impact assessment of the road upgrades. The survey area is approximately 68.5 ha in area and includes a broad area of land between Scotsdale Road and the Denmark River and the road reserve and adjacent land along East River Road and McIntosh Road between the Denmark Mt Barker Road and South Western Highway. A 200 m section north and south along the Denmark Mt Barker Road from East River Road was also surveyed. The biological assessment involved a desktop review and three separate field surveys, including a winter flora and fauna survey, spring flora and fauna survey and spring nocturnal fauna survey. Fauna surveys also included the use of movement sensitive cameras in key locations. Key biological aspects The key biological aspects and constraints identified for the survey area are summarised in the following table. -

It is hoped that by providing this summary of lower Warren River foreshore condition and weed presence, future works in the area can be more focused on identified management priorities and issues. The action plan is separated into eight sections. A brief overview of the river action plan and key findings is given in the summary. The lower Warren River has been divided into four sections for assessment and reporting purposes. A map accompanying the summary (Figure 1, p. vii) gives an indication of these sections. This overall map relates to smaller, section-specific maps in Section 7. Section 1 provides background information on the river action plan, including aims and objectives of the study and involvement of various groups and persons. Section 2 outlines the study area, covering issues such as landscape, climate, flora and fauna, as well as Indigenous heritage values. Section 3 covers general river processes as well as water quality issues specific to the lower Warren River. Section 4 provides an overview of the methodology involved in assessing foreshore condition. Section 5 outlines management issues identified as a result of the foreshore surveys. -

It is restricted to damp habitats of the South West Botanical Province of Western Australia. In this revision of the genus, 22 species are recognised, including 11 new species (A. cicatricosa Rye & Trudgen, A. decemcostata Rye, A. eobalta Rye, A. graniticola Rye & Trudgen, A. middletonii Rye, A. montana Rye, A. onycis Rye & Trudgen, A. schaueri Rye & Trudgen, A. reticulata Rye, A. transversa Rye and A. zephyra Rye & Trudgen) and one new subspecies (A. aspera Schauer subsp. riparia Rye). A presumed hybrid between A. arbuscula (R.Br. ex Benth.) Rye and A. corniculata Schauer is also described. Distinguishing characteristics, insect associations and other aspects of the biology of Astartea are discussed and illustrated. The genus Beaufortia which is endemic to Western Australia is one of several related genera in the Myrtaceae family which produce bottlebrush flowers. Beaufortia sparsa is confined to the Albany district of Western Australia where it thrives in swamps which dry out in summer, hence its common name, swamp bottle brush. Forming a shrub of delicate and open ap- pearance, 1-2 m in hcight, 8.sporsais best in group plantings with individual plants close together. The leaves, up to 1 cm long, are arranged in two pairs of opposite rows. They are dark green and provide an interesting con- trast to the bright flowers. For those who prefer a denser bush, B. sparsa responds well to tip pruning. This is best done in spring before new growth starts. Australian Plants Society Yarra Yarra Group Inc (Incorporation No. A0039676Y) Newsletter April 2019 General Meeting: April 4th at 8pm Claire Farrell & John Rayner : Melbourne Woody Meadows Project Claire Farrell is a Senior Lecturer in Green Infrastructure, based at the Burnley Campus of The University of Melbourne. Her main research interest involves using plants to make cities more liveable. Claire has a PhD in plant ecology and for the last 9 years her research has focused on developing green roofs for Australian conditions. As green roofs are difficult places for plant to survive, much of her research has focused on the drought tolerance and water use strategies of native Australian plants, including granite outcrop vegetation. This world leading research has been published internationally and key recommendations have also influenced policy and practice. Other research includes plant selection for green façades, rain gardens and low maintenance shrub plantings. John Rayner is an Associate Professor and Director of Urban Horticulture at the University of Melbourne. His research and teaching is focussed around the design and use of plants in the landscape, including green roofs and walls, climbing, shrub and ground cover plants and therapeutic landscapes. Based at the Burnley Campus, John is a passionate educator, has published widely and regularly acts as a landscape and horticultural consultant. He is a keen gardener and in his spare time gains great joy from nurturing and torturing plants on his 1 ha garden in the Dandenong Ranges. A taxonomic revision of Beaufortia (Myrtaceae: Melaleuceae). Nuytsia 27: 165–202 (2016). Beaufortia R.Br. (Myrtaceae) is endemic to the south-west of Western Australia and is almost confined to the South-West Botanical Province, with a few species extending a short distance into the Eremaean. Twenty-two species are recognised in this revision of the genus, including three new species: B. burbidgeae A.A.Burb., B. kwongkanicola A.A.Burb. and B. raggedensis A.A.Burb. Beaufortia puberula Turcz. is reinstated and B. interstans F.Muell. placed into synonymy under it. Lectotypes are selected for B. anisandra Schauer, B. dampieri A.Cunn., B. elegans Schauer, B. empetrifolia (Rchb.) Schauer, B. micrantha Schauer, B. micrantha var. puberula Benth., B. orbifolia F.Muell., B. schaueri Preiss ex Schauer, B. schaueri var. (?) atrorubens Benth., B. sparsa R.Br. and B. squarrosa Schauer. Introduction Beaufortia R.Br. has been considered a separate genus since 1812; however, its retention has been disputed. Ladiges et al. (1999; 2003), Brown et al. (2001), Wilson et al. (2001; 2005) and Edwards et al. (2010) have analysed molecular data from some species within the tribe Melaleuceae Burnett and reported evidence for the non-monophyly of Melaleuca L.
