So you can better understand the current state of innovation and entrepreneurship at UNC, this report presents a snapshot across the three missions of research, teaching, and service. As with any such report, it leaves out as much as it includes, especially considering this is a campus with more than 3,000 faculty members, 27,500 students and the report covers multiple years. Representative but not exhaustive, it will, however, present a starting point for your own explorations. Determining impact through rigorous evaluation is always a challenge since it is ofen very expensive and requires long lag times between the event and the outcome. When possible, impact results are covered in the report, but it is weighed toward activities.     The State Legislature The General Assembly is the oldest governmental body in North Carolina. According to tradition, a “legislative assembly of free holders” met for the first time around 1666. No documentary proof, however, exists proving that this assembly actually met. Provisions for a representative assembly in Proprietary North Carolina can be traced to the Concessions and Agreements, adopted in 1665, which called for an unicameral body composed of the governor, his council and twelve delegates selected annually to sit as a legislature. This system of representation prevailed until 1670, when Albemarle County was divided into three precincts. Berkeley Precinct, Carteret Precinct and Shaftsbury Precinct were apparently each allowed five representatives. Around 1682, four new precincts were created from the original three as the colony’s population grew and the frontier moved westward. The new precincts were usually allotted two representatives, although some were granted more. Beginning with the Assembly of 1723, several of the larger, more important towns were allowed to elect their own representatives. Edenton was the first town granted this privilege, followed by Bath, New Bern, Wilmington, Brunswick, Halifax, Campbellton (Fayetteville), Salisbury, Hillsborough and Tarborough. Around 1735 Albemarle and Bath Counties were dissolved and the precincts became counties. The unicameral legislature continued until around 1697, when a bicameral form was adopted. The governor or chief executive at the time, and his council constituted the upper house. The lower house, the House of Burgesses, was composed of representatives elected from the colony’s various precincts. The lower house could adopt its own rules of procedure and elect its own speaker and other officers.

Green PREFACE Dr. Louis Round Wilson originally suggested the idea of a centennial history of the Chapel Hill Methodist Church in a letter to the pastor, the Reverend Henry G. Ruark, on July 6, 1949. After due consideration the minister appointed a com- mittee to study the matter and to formulate plans for a history. The committee members were Mrs. Hope S. Chamberlain, Fletcher M. Green, Mrs. Guy B. Johnson, Edgar W. Knight, Mrs. Harold G. McCurdy, Mrs. Walter Patten, Mrs. William Whatley Pierson, Mrs. Marvin H. Stacy, and Dr. Louis R. Wilson, chairman. The commilttee adopted a tentative outline and apportioned the work of gathering data among its members. Later Dr. Wilson resigned as chairman and was succeeded by Fletcher M. Green. In 1929, Crockett graduated from Lancaster High School, valedictorian of her class. She attended Winthrop College and graduated, magna cum laude, in 1933. As a student, she was a member of the French Literary Society and the Royal Order of Strawberry Leaf, Winthrop’s Debating Society. Crockett taught History at H.R. Rice Elementary School for forty-five years. Through most of this time, she also served as the school’s principal. In the course of her career, she received several awards, including the Valley Forge Freedom Foundation Classroom Teacher’s Medal and Award in 1963 and the Lederer-Lawson award, recognizing her contributions to historical research, in 1968. Crockett also participated in a variety of local historical and professional organizations such as the Carolinas Genealogical Society, Lancaster County Historical Society, South Carolina Educational Association, and Waxhaws Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Throughout her life, she has remained an active member of Old Waxhaw Presbyterian Church, one of South Carolina’s oldest and most historic churches.
