Principal’s Report We have almost arrived at Advent and the large part of our first semester is over. This year we have 1538 young women and men who have taken the tradition of academic excellence at our school to a new level. These young people have embraced the curriculum with a great enthusiasm, which has made our launch of the 2016-2017 school year the best start ever. I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the commitment of our 2016-2017 Catholic School Council. This year’s school council members are; Ms. Cespite and Ms. Martin are our co-chairpersons; Ms. Reid is our secretary, Ms. DaFonte is our treasurer, Ms. Campagna is our parish rep., Ms. Licata is our OAPCE rep., Ms. Menezes is our community rep. and Ms. Umolu is a council member. This group of dedicated parents have embraced their role to promote the vision of excellence in Catholic Education. I invite you, parents/guardians, to join our Catholic School Council meetings held throughout the year, on the third Monday of each month, here at St. Marguerite d’Youville Catholic Secondary School. Regularly updated School Council information is also available on the school website. The opening of our school year has been an eventful one. In the first two months, we had our Girls Night and Boys Night welcome as well as our Grade 9 retreat led by Chaplaincy Leader Mr. Whelan. On October 13th, we had our St. Marguerite’s Feast Day, where we walked to mass at the St. Marguerite d’Youville church and returned to school for a common lunch. This Feast day was a fundraiser for Sharelife and Dr. Simone and I am delight to report that our community raised a total of $9,382.50.00 for this very worthy cause. We are all extremely proud of the efforts from our school community. November is the month that we remember all who have gone before us. In true d’Youville reverence we have a moving Remembrance Day presentation. Special thanks to the teachers and students who put together this amazing presentation that honours our soldiers who gave their lives for our freedom. A special thanks to the Guidance Department and the entire committee who organized a beautiful evening Awards Ceremony, honouring the achievements, hard work and dedication that our students have committed to their studies. Our Grade 8 Information Night will take place on Wednesday, November 16th at 6 pm in the cafeteria. This is an evening where we invited all Grade 8 students to come and visit our school. We showcased the wonderful things that happen at d’Youville and encouraged them to join our school community by registering to be part of our 2017-2018 school year. Our first formal report card will be sent home with your son or daughter on November 17th. I would like to emphasize the importance of open communication between teachers and parents, so please stay in touch with the teachers that teach your son or daughter. Open communication and sharing of information is the cornerstone of a successful student. The birth of the Messiah is what we are anticipating as we begin to prepare during Advent the great event of Christmas. The birth of the One who inaugurates our journey from darkness to light, from sadness to joy, from conflict to peace. Advent is that time when once again we renew our hope and our optimism, that we strengthen the bonds of love in our families and in our friendships. There are signs of hope all around us if we but look and see. At d’Youville we are blessed with great signs of hope in our staff and students, as we come together and help those in need through our clothing drive, food drive and fundraisers. Thank you to all the students and staff who make this community such a wonderful place. In closing, I would like to thank you, the parents/guardians, for your continued support. It is when we work as a team and believe in our students, your sons and/or daughters, that we are truly successful. God Bless Ms. S. Cross Country & Junior Volleyball JUNIOR VOLLEYBALL The Junior Boys Volleyball team have had an excellent start to the 2016 season. There are 5 returning players which include Richard Kovacs, Alex Ihaza, Samuel Awuah, Samuel Onabolu, and Ryan Mackay, we also have a grade 10 newcomer: Reignings Awah who has quickly become a dominant hitting force in the middle. Rounding out the team are the hard working grade 9’s who have adapted well and have shown a lot of dedication to the team: Jamal Lettman, Elijah Baltazar, Sebastian Delgado, Steve Joseph, Irving Wynder, and Fil Yeboah . Also appreciated is the help of manager Sunshine Agbalugo. The Panthers have participated in 2 Tournaments where everyone played and showed tremendous talent. In the North Park Early Bird Tournament, with only one practice under their belt, the Panthers took home a 3rd place finish. At the St. Roch Tournament the Panthers rolled over 7 teams going undefeated in the tournament and winning the championship in straight sets against St. Joseph. During league play the boys continue their winning ways and have a record of 2 wins with zero losses. Coach Moynihan and McAllister are amazed at how successful the team has been and have set high expectations for the Panthers. Good luck boys! CROSS COUNTRY SEASON 2016 This year’s cross country team did a tremendous job at all four of their meets. The first meet was held at Heart Lake S.S. early in September. This was a great introductory meet especially to our grade 9 runners. St. Marguerite d’Youville runners continued to shine at our second meet. The Marcellinus Invitational was held in late September at Erindale Park in Mississauga. Top finishers were the Jonathan DeSouza, Joshua DeSouza, Nadia Corrado and Stephanie D’Lima. Mid October brought some of the team to the pre- ROPSSAA meet held in Port Hope. With over 80 schools participating and the cool temperatures, our team still persevered through the tough course to prepare for ROPSSAA and the OFSAA Championships. Our final meet of the season was the ROPSSAA Championships held again at Heart Lake Conservation area in late October. Our top finishers were Joshua DeSouza, Johnathan DeSouza, and Stephanie D’Lima. Our ROPSSAA champs Joshua and Jonathan DeSouza both advance to OFSAA. Congratulations to all 2016 Corss Country runners on a fantastic season. Special thanks to our managers Joanna Dos Santos and Isabelle Valdez. Ms. Steinhofer and Mrs. Manzo would like to commend all team members for their hard work and dedication.     Brampton Natural Areas Inventory 1 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Building a Community The Greater Toronto Area-Hamilton (GTAH) is one of the fastest growing regions in North America and Brampton is the second fastest growing community in Canada. The Province has provided strong direction for urban development and growth, and the protection and management of natural resources. This direction must be addressed through the City of Brampton’s strategic plans and policies that are supported by initiatives, programs and actions. Brampton recognizes that the foundation for a healthy, liveable city is the protection, restoration and management of a robust, biologically diverse and self-sustaining natural heritage system. The natural heritage system is intrinsic to providing air, water, soil and energy resources, and is vital to mitigating human impacts to these same resources. Brampton is blessed by the numerous river and valley corridors of the Credit River, Fletcher’s Creek, Etobicoke Creek, Mimico Creek and West Humber River watersheds that form the backbone of the City’s open space network, and connect the City to some of Ontario’s most significant environmental features, including the Niagara Escarpment, Oak Ridges Moraine and Lake Ontario. Linked to these significant natural corridors are tableland woodlands, wetlands, headwater drainage features and the City’s active parkland, open space, green infrastructure and cultural heritage systems. Brampton’s natural heritage system identified to date covers approximately 4600 hectares or 17% of the municipal land base. At this time, approximately 2200 ha are currently in public (City and Conservation Authority) ownership. Brampton’s natural environment has been fragmented from over 150 years of agricultural land clearing and farming activities, and rural and urban development, which has resulted in the extensive loss and alteration of the pre-settlement vegetation communities and natural heritage features.

    Memorandum to: Directors of Education Secretary/Treasurers of School Authorities From: Nancy Naylor Deputy Minister Subject: COVID-19: School Testing Pilot Program Building off information shared in the Ministry of Education’s August 3rd memo, COVID- 19: Health, Safety and Operational Guidance for Schools 2021-22, we are writing with an update on a pilot program for COVID-19 testing initiatives that are being offered on a targeted basis to Ontario secondary schools. Overview: School Testing Plan The government’s testing strategy in schools is grounded in guidance from the Office of the Chief Medical Officer of Health and supports close collaboration between local public health units, schools, and Ontario Health. When an individual is identified as needing testing under provincial guidance, where possible, they will be offered a testing approach that is as minimally invasive as possible (e.g. nasal, mouth and saliva testing). School Boards should be working with their local Public Health Units to ensure all students know where local testing options exist. When tests are needed, they will be made quickly accessible through multiple approaches (e.g. assessment centres and community testing sites), with a focus on reducing barriers to access and recognizing the unique needs of certain communities and geographies. Operationalizing the school testing plan could include deployment of mobile vendors to school sites and making take-home self-collection kits available in certain schools. School Testing Strategy: Pilot Initiative for Targeted Ontario Schools Starting in September, as part of the overall school testing strategy in schools, the Ministry of Education (EDU)—in close partnership with Ontario Health, Ministry of Health and Ministry of Government and Consumer Services—will initiate a pilot program in targeted secondary schools.
