Principal’s Report

We have almost arrived at Advent and the large part of our first semester is over. This year we have 1538 young women and men who have taken the tradition of academic excellence at our school to a new level. These young people have embraced the curriculum with a great enthusiasm, which has made our launch of the 2016-2017 school year the best start ever.

I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the commitment of our 2016-2017 Catholic School Council. This year’s school council members are; Ms. Cespite and Ms. Martin are our co-chairpersons; Ms. Reid is our secretary, Ms. DaFonte is our treasurer, Ms. Campagna is our parish rep., Ms. Licata is our OAPCE rep., Ms. Menezes is our community rep. and Ms. Umolu is a council member. This group of dedicated parents have embraced their role to promote the vision of excellence in Catholic Education. I invite you, parents/guardians, to join our Catholic School Council meetings held throughout the year, on the third Monday of each month, here at St. Marguerite d’Youville Catholic Secondary School. Regularly updated School Council information is also available on the school website.

The opening of our school year has been an eventful one. In the first two months, we had our Girls Night and Boys Night welcome as well as our Grade 9 retreat led by Chaplaincy Leader Mr. Whelan. On October 13th, we had our St. Marguerite’s Feast Day, where we walked to mass at the St. Marguerite d’Youville church and returned to school for a common lunch. This Feast day was a fundraiser for Sharelife and Dr. Simone and I am delight to report that our community raised a total of $9,382.50.00 for this very worthy cause. We are all extremely proud of the efforts from our school community.

November is the month that we remember all who have gone before us. In true d’Youville reverence we have a moving Remembrance Day presentation. Special thanks to the teachers and students who put together this amazing presentation that honours our soldiers who gave their lives for our freedom. A special thanks to the Guidance Department and the entire committee who organized a beautiful evening Awards Ceremony, honouring the achievements, hard work and dedication that our students have committed to their studies.

Our Grade 8 Information Night will take place on Wednesday, November 16th at 6 pm in the cafeteria. This is an evening where we invited all Grade 8 students to come and visit our school. We showcased the wonderful things that happen at d’Youville and encouraged them to join our school community by registering to be part of our 2017-2018 school year.

Our first formal report card will be sent home with your son or daughter on November 17th. I would like to emphasize the importance of open communication between teachers and parents, so please stay in touch with the teachers that teach your son or daughter. Open communication and sharing of information is the cornerstone of a successful student.

The birth of the Messiah is what we are anticipating as we begin to prepare during Advent the great event of Christmas. The birth of the One who inaugurates our journey from darkness to light, from sadness to joy, from conflict to peace. Advent is that time when once again we renew our hope and our optimism, that we strengthen the bonds of love in our families and in our friendships. There are signs of hope all around us if we but look and see. At d’Youville we are blessed with great signs of hope in our staff and students, as we come together and help those in need through our clothing drive, food drive and fundraisers. Thank you to all the students and staff who make this community such a wonderful place.

In closing, I would like to thank you, the parents/guardians, for your continued support. It is when we work as a team and believe in our students, your sons and/or daughters, that we are truly successful.

Cross Country & Junior Volleyball

JUNIOR VOLLEYBALL

The Junior Boys Volleyball team have had an excellent start to the 2016 season. There are 5 returning players which include Richard Kovacs, Alex Ihaza, Samuel Awuah, Samuel Onabolu, and Ryan Mackay, we also have a grade 10 newcomer: Reignings Awah who has quickly become a dominant hitting force in the middle. Rounding out the team are the hard working grade 9’s who have adapted well and have shown a lot of dedication to the team: Jamal Lettman, Elijah Baltazar, Sebastian Delgado, Steve Joseph, Irving Wynder, and Fil Yeboah . Also appreciated is the help of manager Sunshine Agbalugo.

The Panthers have participated in 2 Tournaments where everyone played and showed tremendous talent. In the North Park Early Bird Tournament, with only one practice under their belt, the Panthers took home a 3rd place finish. At the St. Roch Tournament the Panthers rolled over 7 teams going undefeated in the tournament and winning the championship in straight sets against St. Joseph. During league play the boys continue their winning ways and have a record of 2 wins with zero losses. Coach Moynihan and McAllister are amazed at how successful the team has been and have set high expectations for the Panthers. Good luck boys!

CROSS COUNTRY SEASON 2016

This year’s cross country team did a tremendous job at all four of their meets. The first meet was held at Heart Lake S.S. early in September. This was a great introductory meet especially to our grade 9 runners. St. Marguerite d’Youville runners continued to shine at our second meet. The Marcellinus Invitational was held in late September at Erindale Park in Mississauga. Top finishers were the Jonathan DeSouza, Joshua DeSouza, Nadia Corrado and Stephanie D’Lima.

Mid October brought some of the team to the pre- ROPSSAA meet held in Port Hope. With over 80 schools participating and the cool temperatures, our team still persevered through the tough course to prepare for ROPSSAA and the OFSAA Championships.

Our final meet of the season was the ROPSSAA Championships held again at Heart Lake Conservation area in late October. Our top finishers were Joshua DeSouza, Johnathan DeSouza, and Stephanie D’Lima. Our ROPSSAA champs Joshua and Jonathan DeSouza both advance to OFSAA.

The 2016 – 2017 academic year began with a few personnel changes in the Guidance department. Mrs. Lina D’Onofrio has assumed the position of acting department head of guidance and student services after long time d’Youville counselor and department head Mr. Claudio DiFederico retired following a 36 year career in education. Other notable changes are the additions of Mr. Marin Dragicevic, counselor, and Ms. Nicole Franklin, our social worker, who replaced Ms. Pina Grosso for this academic year. Recent Events

Post-Secondary Night On Tuesday November 1, St. Marguerite d’Youville hosted its annual post-secondary night for parents and students who were interested in attending a university or college in Ontario. The evening began at 6:00 pm in the cafeteria and matrix and provided opportunities for students and their families to ask over 40 colleges and universities questions related to admissions, specific programs, tuition and all other topics related to a post-secondary academic career.

Take Your Kids to Work Day On Wednesday November 2, Grade 9 students at St. Marguerite d’Youville and across all of Canada took part in “TAKE OUR KIDS TO WORK” day. It is an annual program where Grade 9 (or equivalent) students are hosted by parents, friends, relatives and volunteers at workplaces across the country. The program supports career development by helping students connect school, the world of work, and their own futures.

Awards Night On Tuesday November 3, staff, students and parents celebrated the academic accomplishments of the grade 9, 10 and 11 students from the 2015 – 2016 school year. The evening’s festivities began at 7:00 pm in the cafeteria. The event was well received by the staff, students and their families.

Multicultural Marketplace 2016

All are welcome to join us on Wednesday, December 7th from 6-9 pm, as we are proud to present our bienniel: "d'Y Multicultural Marketplace 2016 – Moving Forward Together!" Our very own matrix and cafeteria will be transformed into close to 20 different regions from around the world. Students and staff have been diligently planning the festivities which will include, a dance, a flag ceremony, tasting of an array of delicious food, and a display of culture and customs for all of our guests to enjoy! This year we are using the painting of The Last Supper with Twelve Tribes by Hyatt Moore as inspiration for our team moving forward together (as seen below). Mr. Moore has transformed a familiar religious scene in the year 2000 to commemorate the inclusion of all peoples under God. Depicted in the photo (from left) are: Crow of Montana, Berber of North Africa, Masai of Kenya, China, Ecuador, Afghanistan, Jesus, Ethiopia, Tzeltal of Mexico, Canela of Brazil, Papua New Guinea, Salish of British Columbia, and Mongolia.

Best Buddies Halloween Activities

On October 28th Best Buddies Club joined their friends in PIP program for tricks and treats. After the launch of the club in October last year, we had a chance to organize our second jubilee event for this Halloween.

Our always eager Best Buddies, Tia and Love gave out Halloween loot bags with many nice treats. They were greeted with smiles from their thirteen friends who were pleasantly surprised by Friday’s visit.

Specialist High Skill Major in Sport

S.H.S.M students were busy the first half of the semester game. In October, S.H.S.M sport students participated in attending reach ahead experiences and attending a Thai Yoga Massage workshop where grade 12 workshops geared towards a career in sport. Students Kinesiology and Health Care students also took part. The travelled to BMO field in Toronto and learned from Toronto Thai Yoga School provided students with industry experts at the Toronto Football Club and how healing and injury management techniques. Students to land a career with a professional sport team were exposed to this career and the job prospects of a organization. Some of the speakers were from marketing, career in massage therapy. Next month students will take sales, team trainers and therapists. After the meet and part in chiropractic workshops and a certification in greet, students had the opportunity to watch a TFC Trigger Point Compression Therapy.

Link Crew Transition Program

Link Crew is a transition program at d’Youville designed to help our new grade 9 students adjust to high school life. Link Crew is made up of a group of dedicated Grade 11 and 12 students from diverse backgrounds in our d’Youville community. Link Leaders are trained to act as positive role models and mentors to steer grade 9’s in the right direction.

Link Leaders began this year by hosting the grade 9 orientation on August 29th . The goal was to welcome grade 9’s to d’Youville, have them become familiar with each other and their surroundings, as well as promote several messages about how to be successful in high school. Link Leaders have continued to assist grade 9’s with transition by acting as guides during grade 9 retreats, as well as through “Academic Follow Ups”. In “Academic Follow Ups”, Link Leaders visit grade 9 classes to discuss the importance of academics, offer advice and strategies in becoming a well-rounded student, and reestablish relationships with them.

In hopes to increase the commitment to the transition of our grade 8 students from our feeder schools, we are hosting our 5th annual “A Day in the Life” event, in which the grade 8 students come to d’Y for the day on November 2 nd while the current grade 9s participate in Take your kid to work day out of the school. Each grade 8 student will follow the schedule similar to a grade 9 student with the guidance and support of our Link Leaders and grade 9 teachers throughout the day. They will also get a glimpse into the specialty course offered at our school.

Link Crew is also looking forward to hosting Cocoa and Cram Study Session before January Exams in order to help grade 9’s prepare for their upcoming exams.

Our Link Crew Leaders pledge to continue to be positive reinforcements in the d’Y community. We look forward to the many events ahead of us this year.

Once again, we will be offering a Link Crew Course for grade 11 students next year! Current grade 10 students who are interested in being Link Leaders for the 2015-2016 school year must select LEADRE on their registration and course selection form to be considered for an interview. Please see any of the Link Crew Coordinators if you have any questions.

Graduation, Literacy

Grad Corner  Students in Co-op and OYAP are reminded that they must remain informed of the deadlines set for  Grad Mass for the Class of 2017 has been scheduled Graduation. The School Website will contain all pertinent information and deadlines for Grad and will for Wednesday June 28th 2017at 10:30 a.m. at St. Marguerite d’Youville Roman Catholic Church at the be updated regularly. The Grad Committee cannot be corner of Sandalwood and Torbram in Brampton. All responsible for disseminating information to students members of the Class of 2017 and their parents are not in the school. Literacy, Literacy, Literacy!!!  Students are reminded that in order to be eligible to

graduate, they MUST complete 40 hours of Thursday March 30, 2017 is the day of the Ontario Community Service and must have successfully Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT). All students completed the Ontario Secondary School Literacy graduating with an Ontario Secondary School Diploma Test. must successfully pass the OSSLT or equivalent by the time

they leave grade 12. To help our students prepare, all grade 10 students will be given a copy of The OSSLT Literacy Lab Workbook to be used on Literacy Mondays. Each Monday, from November 28th to March 27th, classes are tasked with completing a different activity. By the final day in March, the workbooks should be fully completed. Be sure to bring your workbook to every class on Literacy Mondays! Becoming more literate is like any activity, the more you practice, the better you become. All grade 10 students will also participate in a mock test in December. The Literacy Committee would like to thank all the d’Youville teachers who are helping us to prepare students for the OSSLT. We wish all students the very best for success on the test.

 The Grad assembly will be held on Monday November 28th 2016, during period 2 in the caf.

 We will be collecting grad fees after school in the Library on Monday January 23rd and Tuesday January 24th 2017.

During the winter months inclement weather may cause disruption of bus transportation and regular school operations. A decision to cancel school transportation and/or to close schools is usually made by 6:00 a.m. and will be announced on the following radio and television stations:

2. “THE DUFFERIN-PEEL CATHOLIC DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD BUSES AND PEEL DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD BUSES IN THE TOWN OF CALEDON ARE CANCELLED FOR TODAY”. · This means that ALL buses which operate into, out of, and within the Town of Caledon are cancelled for the entire day.

3. “THE DUFFERIN-PEEL CATHOLIC DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD BUSES AND THE PEEL DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD BUSES IN THE TOWN OF CALEDON AND THE COUNTY OF DUFFERIN ARE CANCELLED FOR TODAY”. · This means that all runs listed under announcements #l and #2 are cancelled. · Individual schools will be notified if this cancellation affects their school.

4. “THE DUFFERIN-PEEL CATHOLIC DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD AND THE PEEL DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD BUSES IN THE CITY OF MISSISSAUGA ARE CANCELLED FOR TODAY.” · This means that ALL buses which operate into, out of, and within the City of Mississauga are cancelled for the entire day.

5. “ALL DUFFERIN-PEEL CATHOLIC DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD AND PEEL DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD BUSES ARE CANCELLED FOR TODAY.” · This means that ALL transportation services provided by the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board and the Peel District School Board, including buses, vans and taxis have been cancelled for the entire day.

6. “ALL BUSES ARE CANCELLED AND THE SCHOOLS AND OFFICES OF BOTH THE DUFFERIN-PEEL CATHOLIC DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD AND THE PEEL DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD ARE CLOSED”. · This means that ALL Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board and Peel District School board schools and offices are closed to all students and staff.

Note: For Secondary School students Riding Public Transit, cancellation of service will be communicated by the respective transit property over the radio. Please be advised that Public Transit rarely cancels and that the level of service on days with inclement weather is unpredictable.
