    Matt Mountain Director, Space Telescope Science Institute Testimony before the House Space and Aeronautics Subcommittee Committee on Science, Space and Technology September 12, 2012 Mr. Chairman and Members of the Subcommittee, thank you for the opportunity to testify about the scientific uses of NASA’s Space Launch System or SLS. Since the dawn of the space age, visionaries such as James Webb, the second NASA Administrator (who put the Agency on the path to land men on the Moon), realized space technologies could engage the scientific community and create new scientific capabilities. That partnership between science and NASA led to globally recognized icons of science such as the Hubble Space Telescope, and most recently the Curiosity Mars lander. The SLS has the potential to enable us to cost-effectively build the next generation of ambitious space telescopes and planetary probes. This will allow us to observe amazing phenomena that are well beyond the capabilities of the Hubble or James Webb Space Telescopes or our existing fleet of interplanetary spacecraft. Imagine being able to answer the question that stirs endless wonder across the millennia: "Are we alone?" The answer is now within reach. Imagine being able to observe weather on a habitable Earth-like planet orbiting a nearby star other than our Sun. Imagine being able to take a detailed picture of a black hole and see the cataclysmic fate of matter as it disappears into oblivion at the event horizon. Imagine returning samples of Martian soil back to Earth in a single mission for detailed analyses, or landing new generation of probes on far more distant bodies such as the icy moons of Jupiter or Saturn.

Temkin Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, 11100 Johns Hopkins Rd., Laurel, Maryland, 20723-6099, USA Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT The MESSENGER (MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging) spacecraft was launched on August 3, 2004. The spacecraft will be inserted into Mercury orbit in March 2011 for one year of orbital operation. During the mission, the spacecraft distance to the Sun will vary between approximately 1 and 0.3 Astronomical Units (AU), imposing severe requirements on the spacecraft thermal and power systems design. The spacecraft is maintained behind a sunshade. The two single-axis, gimbaled solar array panels are designed to withstand the expected high temperatures. A peak power tracking system has been selected to allow operation over the widely varying solar array I-V curves. In order to reduce cost and risk while increasing the likelihood of mission success, the approach taken in the power system design, including the solar arrays, was to use conventional design, materials, and fabrication techniques. 1. MISSION DESCRIPTION a. Launch Configuration Sunshade MESSENGER (MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging), shown in Fig. 1, is a Battery NASA Discovery Program spacecraft designed and built by the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL). It will orbit the planet Mercury for one Earth year of orbital operation. Most of what is known about Mercury comes from the Mariner 10 spacecraft. Using three flybys, Mariner 10 was able to map about 45% of the planet surface during a one-year period between 1974 and 1975.

    Index for Late Registrations and Corrections to Birth Records held at the Greene County Records Center and Archives The late registrations and corrections to Greene County birth records currently held at the Greene County Records Center and Archives were recorded between 1940 and 1991, and include births as early as 1862 and as late as 1989. These records represent the effort of county government to correct the problem of births that had either not been recorded or were not recorded correctly. Often times the applicant needed proof of birth to obtain employment, join the military, or draw on social security benefits. An index of the currently available microfilmed records was prepared in 1989, and some years later, a supplemental index of additional records held by Greene County was prepared. In 2011, several boxes of Probate Court documents containing original applications and backup evidence in support of the late registrations and corrections to the birth records were sorted and processed for archival storage. This new index includes and integrates all the bound and unbound volumes of late registrations and corrections of birth records, and the boxes of additional documents held in the Greene County Archives. The index allows researchers to view a list arranged in alphabetical order by the applicant’s last name. It shows where the official record is (volume and page number) and if there is backup evidence on file (box and file number). A separate listing is arranged alphabetically by mother’s maiden name so that researchers can locate relatives of female relations. KEY WEST IS TRULY A 'PRESIDENTIAL CITY' By HAMPTON DUNN KEY WEST --- The first President to discover the delights of this Southernmost City in the U.S. was president Jefferson Davis of the Confederate States of America. He came here in 1867, shortly after his release from prison following the South's defeat. The first U.S. President to visit here was Ulysses S. Grant, the famed Civil War General, who touched down here on a world tour in 1880. President William Howard Taft came down on Henry Flagler's Overseas Railroad in 1912, with Flagler proudly showing him the sights. Grover Cleveland was one of the early Presidents who liked Key West. President Hervert Hoover, a real Isaac Walton, loved the Keys and stayed here aboard his yacht often during his Presidency.
