You have to expect something like that on every tour. Accept all Manage Cookies. Everything else is secondary. What made you decide to write a memoir at this point in your life? He makes people angry. Most groups never get a shot at the big time. Book by Wareham, Dean. Some good, some weird. One of my favorite memoirs. There are dumb fans and bleak hotel rooms. Worst experiences on the road usually involve horrendous travel days, driving in the snow, driving all night long, the bus breaking down, getting lost. What attracted me to Luna was the sticker proclaiming "featuring members Black Postcards: A Rock & Roll Romance Galaxiethe Chills and the Feelies". Even when we were putting those records out, people either loved us or hated us, there was something extreme in what we were doing. Equally, they never get dropped by a major label. Apr 20, Surfing Moose rated it really liked it. It's rare that someone who has always been seen as the epitome of detached New York indie Black Postcards: A Rock & Roll Romance cool would write something that utterly demystifies that premise. I wanted to be free. I think there are so many good qualities to Dean, intelligence, talent, sense of humor and I wouldn't have known much about this just from watching him on stage. So to the lyrics… Romantic, flirtatious, decadent, hedonistic, Black Postcards: A Rock & Roll Romance, sarcastic, mischievous, nonchalant, sincere, ironic, nostalgic, innocent, guilty, warm, cool, wistful, affable, arch, self-deprecating, funny, punny, comfortable, relaxed, moody, languid, intimate, post-coital, pre-coital… Lou Reed might have captured the life and language of Andy Warhol's Factory set in the 60's, but Dean Wareham did the same for a generation in the 90's and noughties that were just getting on with business and life and love and more recently children. But there you go, that's what usually happens with bands. I actually liked that it did not rely on sensational events to keep it interesting. So I was hooked. It then leads one to wonder why he felt the urge to write a memoir at this point Black Postcards: A Rock & Roll Romance his life anyhow - he's not particularly a good memoirist, his writing leaves a lot to be desired, he's grumpy and bitter and often very defensive. Instead he gave them Luna, Stereolab and the Afghan Whigs. However, sometimes you need an outsider from Pittsburgh or Hibbing or Wellington to see things as they really are. More Details Want to Read Currently Reading Read. But his supreme interest is clearly and purely music. The irony being that all these years later they're able to put onto paper all the smal I'm a huge Galaxie fan, lucky enough to have caught them live and buy their records as they were released. They toured after that record was released, claiming they were done; a farewell romp. Our tickets were on Pan Am, but between the start and the end of the tour Pan Am had gone out of business. The guitars rock harder than you think, but you have to hear them. Wareham's book is the best to read if you're not in a band and want to know what it's really like. Dec 30, Mark Stevens rated it it was amazing. Can you talk about what led to the break-up of the two bands? Wareham's biography isn't afraid to be honest; from his marital indiscretions, to his feelings about other bands, right up to his own ability to see his own work as under-appreciated and utterly absurd all at the same time, this is is the stuff a good biography is made of. Things really changed aroundwhen alternative rock was in steep decline. When Black Postcards: A Rock & Roll Romance are excited to see you, then you are excited to be there. ON OFF. Black Postcards: A Rock & Roll Romance was one of the fun things about the book-we get to see how his This Black Postcards: A Rock & Roll Romance gives a great deal of insight into the mind of Dean Wareham, lead singer of GalaxieLuna, co lead in Dean and Britta. That book read like it had ghost writing magic worked on it like a slick producer churns out the lastest piece of popular junk. This book covers most of Wareham's life, ranging from his childhood in New Zealand and Australia to his years in New York City and at Harvard and finally through his years in Galaxie and Luna, ending with the latter band's last show until reuniting a decade later in Open Preview See a Problem? Wareham is clear about his own secret at first coupling up with new bass player Britta Phillips, a move he knows will cause a major rift in the Luna dynamics, and he's blunt about his relationship with fans, too. Goodreads helps you keep track of books you want to read. View 2 comments. He also talks about his wife and son and his affair with Britta Phillips. There are drugs, there is sex, there are parties—and boredom. Four rounded down to 3. His honesty is challenging and humbling. Dominick Dunne would make sure his seat was saved before excusing himself to use the restroom. Especially if you've hardly slept, and you have a headache, and you're riding in a stinky van, wondering what you're doing with your life". His obvious intelligence, frank grumpy humor, appropriate Dean Wareham's account of the music industry in the late 80s, 90s, and early 00s, and his personal experiences with it throughout those years makes for a riveting read. It's probably true that he wasn't doing drugs all of the time, just when it became available in certain cities, but it still bothered me. I did not have as much on the first few years of Luna, but then, aroundBlack Postcards: A Rock & Roll Romance started keeping a tour diary, which I would post on our website. When I started writing the book, with the band broken up and my marriage finished, I was able to include these details. Ray Manzarek. In addition, the interesting parts of Dean's story- the formation and breakup of Galaxiehis relationship with Britta, etc. Perhaps, despite the Velvet feel, the music is just a bit too crafted for some? If they are more commercially ambitious or set on financial success or they woo fame too slavishly, then they impose different expectations on themselves. https://uploads.strikinglycdn.com/files/3468d3cc-57f5-489f-8ca6-212c9f65b6ca/speak-with-distinction-73.pdf https://uploads.strikinglycdn.com/files/09b6b7ef-8df6-46ac-a194-b6f040898667/today-ill-be-a-princess-99.pdf https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0498/4258/5789/files/smoke-and-ashes-90.pdf https://uploads.strikinglycdn.com/files/13a128e5-6f62-4676-9809-abe30250936c/the-athletes-guide-to-yoga-an-integrated-approach-to- strength-flexibility-focus-86.pdf https://uploads.strikinglycdn.com/files/c7846d8d-9fe1-4415-8f5d-00cd14451387/a-short-introduction-to-promoting-resilience-in-children- 56.pdf https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0503/1552/6312/files/to-love-again-73.pdf.

Kennedy had just been assassinated, the Civil Rights Act was mere months from inception, and the US was becoming more heavily involved in the conflict in Vietnam. It was 1964, and at The Factory in New York, Andy Warhol was experimenting with film. Over the course of two years, Andy Warhol selected regulars to his factory, both famous and anonymous that he felt had “star potential” to sit and be filmed in one take, using 100 foot rolls of film. It has been documented that Warhol shot nearly 500 screen tests, but not all were kept. Many of his screen tests have been curated into groups that start with “13 Most Beautiful…” To accompany these film portraits, Dean & Britta, formerly of the NY band, Luna, were commissioned by the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust and The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to create original songs, and remixes of songs from musicians of the era. This endeavor led Dean & Britta to a third studio album consisting of a total of 21 songs titled, “13 Most Beautiful..

SING POPULAR CULTURE: THE USES AND FUNCTIONS OF THE MIX TAPE By Melanie Lovatt A thesis submitted to the School of Graduate Studies in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Department of Folklore Memorial University ofNewfoundland July 2005 St. John's Newfoundland ii Abstract Mix tapes consist of songs and other audio recordings which are arranged and sequenced according to the desires of their creators, and which are then often presented to a recipient in the form of a gift. This thesis researches the ways in which mix tapes are used in communication. Drawing on interviews with six principal informants, I consider the mix tape both from the point of view ofthe creator, as well as the recipient.
