Published: 2 August 2018 Abstract: In recent years, mercury (Hg) concentration that exceeds the Maximum Contaminant Level Standard set by the World Health Organisation for drinking water has been detected in the groundwater of Skiathos Island in Greece. The island single source of urban water is groundwater; as a result, tap water has been characterised as unsafe for drinking and people rely on bottled water for their everyday needs. The origin and speciation of Hg in the aquifer is investigated with the use of the Pourbaix diagram, while the possible correlation with groundwater salinization due to seawater intrusion is examined. Keywords: Pourbaix diagram; mercury speciation; groundwater salinisation 1. Introduction During the last few decades, there has been a growing interest worldwide in mercury and the mechanisms that govern its concentrations in air, soil and water. In many parts of the world, health authorities are becoming increasingly concerned about the effects of heavy metals on the environment and human health [1]. Mercury is one of the most important heavy metal environmental pollutants because of its volatility and accompanying long‐range atmospheric transport, its toxicity and its ability to bioaccumulate in organisms [2,3].

  • HIDDEN TREASURES of GREECE Exploring Landmark Historic Sites & Idyllic Islands
CHAMBER MUSIC JOUR NEYS Beyond the or dinar y HELL AS HIDDEN TREASURES OF GREECE Exploring Landmark Historic Sites & Idyllic Islands Including The Thessaly Skopelos Chamber Music Festival September 29 – October 12, 2020 ronted by the longest coastline of any country in Europe, Greece presents an extraordinary variety of attractions that include magnificent landscapes, idyllic islands and ancient sites and monuments that have Fsurvived through the centuries. While these attractions have made Greece a popular travel destination, there are areas and islands of this fabled land that are incredibly beautiful and important, yet they remain “hidden” and undisturbed by the usual characteristics of mass tourism. We designed this itinerary to include places that are “undiscovered,” places that will fascinate and delight you. Our journey of this unusual discovery will begin in northern Greece, specifically in Thessaloniki, the biblical Thessalonica, also known as Sa- Pelion lonica. Founded in the 4th century BC on the head of a spacious bay, and named after the half-sister of Alexander the Great, Thessaloniki has remained prosperous, vibrant and cosmopolitan since its founding al- most 2,500 years ago. From here, we will continue to Thessaly in central Greece. One of the country’s most surprising and interesting regions, Thessaly borders Mount Olympus and was the home of “god-like” Achilles, the hero of Homer’s Iliad. It was also the home of Jason, who led the Argonauts in their expedition to fetch the Golden Fleece. The legendary stories of Achilles and Jason reveal a land that has been in- habited since deep antiquity. Among the sites we will explore here are the incredible medieval monasteries of Meteora (“monasteries in mid- air”), and glorious Pelion and its old traditional villages.

This paper discusses some possible reasons for these lacunae, having to do with dialect methodology, and Greek history and geography. It then moves on to employ the work of Kontossopoulos and Newton in an attempt to arrive at a more detailed classification of Greek dialects than has hitherto been attempted, using a small number of phonological criteria, and to provide a map, based on this classification, of the overall geographical configuration of Greek dialects. Keywords: Modern Greek dialects, dialectology, traditional dialects, dialect cartography 1. Introduction Tzitzilis (2000, 2001) divides the history of the study of Greek dialects into three chronological phases. First, there was work on individual dialects with a historical linguistic orientation focussing mainly on phonological features. (We can note that some of this early work, such as that by Psicharis and Hadzidakis, was from time to time coloured by linguistic-ideological preferences related to the diglossic situation.) The second period saw the development of structural dialectology focussing not only on phonology but also on the lexicon. Thirdly, he cites the move into generative dialectology signalled by Newton’s pioneering book (1972). As also pointed out by Sifianou (Forthcoming), however, Tzitzilis indicates that there has been very little research on social variation (Sella 1994 is essentially a discussion of registers and argots only), or on syntax, and no linguistic atlases at all except for the one produced for Crete by Kontossopoulos (1988).

UNCOVERING THE SPARTANS SUICIDE MISSION ON STEVEN PRESSFIELD'S GATES OF FIRE THESIS . By: Alfian Bayu Chandra Reg. Number: A73217054 ENGLISH DEPARTMENT FACULTY OF ARTS AND HUMANITIES UIN SUNAN AMPEL SURABAYA 2021 Declaration Sheet ii EXAMINER SHEET iv v ABSTRACT Chandra, A.B. (2021). Uncovering the Spartans Suicide Mission on Steven Pressfield's Gates Of Fire. English Department, Faculty Arts and Humanities. UIN Sunan Ampel Surabaya. Advisor: Dr. Abu Fanani, S.S., M.Pd Keywords: mimetic, greco-persian wars, sparta, suicide mission This study focuses on the historical events that appear in the novel Gates of Fire, especially on the battle of Thermopylae. The novel Gates of Fire by Steven Pressfield is a novel that tells about the desperate action of the Spartans and the Greeks in repelling the massive Persian invasion. Spartan's story is told in heroic narration from its ancient sources and contains a myth within it. This novel also applied a similar approach to retelling about Spartans with the battle of Thermopylae and its 300 Spartans become key aspects within it. Because of it, this made the novel bring the misconception about the actual event of the Greco-Persian Wars. Thus, this study tends to understand how this novel is reflecting the real event and also understanding about the 300 Spartans and their sacrifice. In order to understand what really happens in the event, this study needs to see the novel through its reference and needs to apply the theory of mimetic. The researcher also uses the qualitative method to analyze and explain its finding in the process.

GRK 3002 Age of Herodotus: The Histories TTh 12:30-1:45 http://myweb.ecu.edu/stevensj/ Prof. John A. Stevens Fall 2019 Office: Ragsdale 133 [email protected] Office Hours: TTh 3:15-5:45 and by appt. (252) 328-6056 Objectives. Upon completion of this course, you will have: • advanced reading knowledge of Ancient Greek prose; • understanding of the dialect of Herodotus' Ionic Greek • comprehension of the historical events that shaped the rise of the Athenian empire from the defeat of the Persians, and of Herodotus' political portrait of tyranny. Herodotus was the originator of the term ἱστορία, “investigation” from which we get our word “history”. His work was also the first literature written in prose. His debt to poetic forms of expression is clear. His investigation aims to make certain that the fame of men would not go unsung (the job of epic) and his narrative patterns, the role he assigns to the Delphic oracle in human events, the progression of man from the height of prosperity to folly to arrogance to suffering the vengeance of the gods (olbios; atê; hybris; nemesis) all suggest that his history is modeled on the framework of tragedy. Herodotus drew on other genres of writing as well: the travelogue, which was anthropological to the point of becoming vaguely historical, and philosophical writing which paid close attention to causation. All of these forms were popular either at Athens (epic and drama) or in Ionia, in the SW of which is H’s home of Halikarnassus (travelogue, pre-Socratic philosophy). Herodotus’ dialect is Ionic as well, which closely resembles Attic except in preferring η over α, and in the use of certain other endings which will be familiar from Homeric epic.
