THE MATERIALS SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT COLLOQUIUM SERIES PRESENTS: Stephan Hruszkewycz Assistant Physicist, Argonne National Laboratory Opportunities for materials science with coherent x-ray diffraction imaging Recent progress in 3D coherent x-ray diffraction imaging methods can enable high resolution structural imaging of nano-structured crystalline materials under operating conditions. In this talk, I discuss developments in Bragg coherent diffraction imaging (BCDI) that aim to broaden the envelope of materials science problems that can be addressed with the technique. Following an introduction of the basic principles of the method, two specific topics will be discussed: 1) BCDI at high x-ray energies that provide dramatic penetrating ability, 2) Bragg ptychography that enable imaging of targeted sub- volumes of a crystal. Both approaches will be discussed in the context of materials science problems that can be addressed in-situ at next-generation synchrotron storage rings including the Upgraded Advanced Photon Source project now underway at Argonne National Laboratory. Stephan Hruszkewycz is a staff scientist in the Materials Science Division at Argonne National Laboratory. His research focuses on developing and using coherent x-ray scattering techniques to interrogate nanoscale materials structure and dynamics under working conditions to reveal structure-property relationships. Currently he is using strain- sensitive coherent Bragg diffraction to image subtle strain fields in nanoscale crystals for photonic and quantum information applications. These research thrusts are pursued at high-brightness synchrotron sources with state-of-the-art coherence-preserving beamlines, including those at the Advanced Photon Source, NSLS-II, and LCLS, and aim to broaden the applicability of coherent diffraction imaging within both the broader materials science community. -

CLARK The initial motivation of the experiment which led to this discovery [of Sco X-1] was a subconscious feeling for the inexhaustible wealth of nature, a wealth that goes far beyond the imagination of man. That feeling was possi- bly generated by experiences in my previous work on cosmic rays; more likely it was inborn and was the reason why, as a young man, I went into the field of cosmic rays. In any case, whenever technical progress opened a new window into the surrounding world, I felt the urge to look through this window, hoping to see something unexpected.1 BEGINNINGS RUNO ROSSI WAS BORN April 13, 1905, in Venice, the el- Bdest of three sons of Rino Rossi and Lina Minerbi. His father was an electrical engineer whose successful career began with work on the electrification of Venice. He wrote in his autobiography2 that his father loved science and would have chosen it for a career except for practical consider- ations. He attributes to his father the influence that turned what may have been an “inborn tendency toward science . into a lifelong commitment.” He recalled: perfectly clear winter mornings when the air was so unusually transparent that the Alps surrounding Venice became clearly visible and appeared in- credibly close (Fata Morgana if you are a child or a poet, anomalous atmo- spheric refraction if you are a scientist). Food Fraud and the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act: Bridging a Disconnect CARISSA CRUSE* ABSTRACT To protect society’s food supply, the term food fraud should be replaced with the term food adulteration when used by the crusaders against food fraud. The term food fraud causes confusion from a legal perspective because it requires an intent to harm in order to take any protective and enforcement measures. This is backwards and needs to be corrected. Replacing food fraud with food adulteration will remove scienter as an element and replace it with a strict liability standard, so that when the food supply is harmed, that alone is enough to take action against the perpetrator of the harm. There is too much at stake when it comes to society’s health, businesses, and cultural requirements to permit a higher standard, specifically one that requires intent. Protecting society’s food supply includes many definitions. For this article, I suggest the crusaders against food fraud adopt the term food adulteration as the umbrella term that includes economic adulteration, food fraud, economically motivated adulteration, and food terrorism (food defense). I also suggest FDA eliminate its working definition of economic adulteration and revert to the definition of adulteration found in statute. Each term is individually defined in the chart below; however, generally, the word “adulterate” is defined as “to corrupt, debase, or make impure by the addition of a foreign or inferior substance or element especially: to prepare for sale by replacing more valuable with less valuable or inert ingredients.”1 Food Adulteration Refers to any change in a food product that a consumer (umbrella term) is unaware of regardless of intent. -

Barcroft married, in 1903, Mary A. Ball, daughter of the late Sir Robert Ball, the celebrated astronomer. One of their sons is Henry Barcroft, Professor of Physiology at Queen’s University, Belfast. Ry the death of Sir Frederick Hopkins, which occurred in Cambridge on 16 May in his 86th year, Nutritional Science lost one of its great pioneers, and its doyen. He had , on long been recognized as the leading biochemist of his time; he was also greatly beloved 29 Sep 2021 at 04:37:19 as a man. In discussing his life’s work in another place,* I wrote that Hopkins’s scientific renown was based on his explorations into at least four or five different avenues of biochemistry: lactic acid in muscle activity; the discovery of the amino-acid tryptophan, and the demonstration of its ‘specific biological value’; his classical experiments on , subject to the Cambridge Core terms of use, available at the need for accessory factors in normal diets (by which he is best known to the man in the street); and his isolation of the cell-catalyst, glutathione (which will perhaps prove scientifically the most significant of all his contributions).
