Press Information Meet the Heroes of Le Mans Mission 2014. Our Return. Porsche at Le Mans Meet the Heroes of Le Mans • Porsche and the 24 Hours of Le Mans 1 Porsche and the 24 Hours of Le Mans Porsche in the starting line-up for 63 years The 24 Hours of Le Mans is the most famous endurance race in the world. The post-war story of the 24 Heures du Mans begins in the year 1949. And already in 1951 – the pro - duction of the first sports cars in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen commenced in March the previous year – a small delegation from Porsche KG tackles the high-speed circuit 200 kilometres west of Paris in the Sarthe department. Class victory right at the outset for the 356 SL Aluminium Coupé marks the beginning of one of the most illustrious legends in motor racing: Porsche and Le Mans. Race cars from Porsche have contested Le Mans every year since 1951. The reward for this incredible stamina (Porsche is the only marque to have competed for 63 years without a break) is a raft of records, including 16 overall wins and 102 class victories to 2013. The sporting competition and success at the top echelon of racing in one of the world’s most famous arenas is as much a part of Porsche as the number combination 911. After a number of class wins in the early fifties with the 550, the first time on the podium in the overall classification came in 1958 with the 718 RSK clinching third place.

The decade from 1970 to 1979, certainly saw some of the most memorable race cars in recent times take to the track. Le Mans: The Official History 1970–79 by Quentin Spurring © Virtual Motorpix/Glen Smale This ten-year period commenced with Porsche’s first victory in the French race (1970), and included the rise of turbo power, victories by Matra (1972, 1973 & 1974) and Renault (1978), and culminated with the first victory by a privateer Porsche team (1979). The Gulf- Mirage scored one victory (1975), with Porsche romping home first on no less than five occasions (1970, 1971, 1976, 1977 & 1979). Porsche’s haul of five wins in ten years was quite remarkable for a manufacturer who, a decade earlier, had not scored a single overall victory at Le Mans. www.porscheroadandrace.com Le Mans: The Official History 1970–79 by Quentin Spurring © Virtual Motorpix/Glen Smale The opening couple of years saw the mighty Porsche 917 going head-to-head with the potent Ferrari 512 S and 512 M, but if truth be told, the Ferraris lacked the development time and commitment by the factory to be a serious, regular contender.

1968 - Porsche 908 Works Short-Tail Coupe Make: Porsche Model: 908 Year: 1968 Location: USA Type: Coupé Chassis Number: 908-010 Drive: RHD Road Registered: No Competition Ready: Yes FIA HTP: Yes Exterior Color: White Price: P.O.A. Key Features One of five 908s with short-tail coupe bodywork Porsche team entry at the 1968 Spa 1000km Raced by legendary drivers Vic Elford and Jochen Neerpasch Original factory chassis, fresh factory 908 engine Star attraction and entry for all historic events around the world including Le Mans Classic Description We are delighted to offer this extremely rare factory built 1968 Porsche 908 “Kurz Heck” (Short-Tail) Coupe with chassis number 908-010 for sale on behalf of its long-term owner. The Porsche 908 was introduced in 1968 to continue the Porsche 906/Porsche 910/Porsche 907 series of models designed under Ferdinand Piech. As the FIA had announced rule changes for Group 6 Prototype-Sports Cars limiting engine displacement to 3000 cc, Porsche designed the 908 as the first Porsche sports car to have an engine with the maximum size allowed. The previous Porsche 907 only had a 2200 cc Type 771/1 flat-8 engine developing 270 hp. The new 3-litre Type 908 flat-8 air-cooled boxer engine produced 257 kW (350 hp) at 8400 rpm. The 908 originally was a closed coupe to provide low drag at fast tracks but from 1969 on was mainly raced as the 908/2, a lighter open spyder. A more compact 908/3 was introduced in 1970 to complement the heavier Porsche 917 on twisty tracks that favored nimble cars, like Targa Florio and Nürburgring.

  • The Magnificent Four Imagine You’Re at the Targa Florio
newsroom History May 10, 2017 The magnificent four Imagine you’re at the Targa Florio. And imagine the heroes of yore – Elford, Linge, van Lennep and Steckkönig – were driving once more. In a Porsche, of course. In 2016 they did it again. Herbert Linge At 88 years of age, it is not everyone who can still change their shoes standing up. Herbert Linge can. With one hand propped on a bale of straw, he pulls the old loafer from his right foot and slips on a “brand new” old racing shoe. Then comes the left. They are quite special shoes – made by his old friend Francesco “Ciccio” Liberto. The shoemaker from Cefalù knows almost all of the old warriors, and many racing drivers had tailor-made, soft, slim pairs made by the gifted leather worker years ago. Linge had three pairs. Two of them wore out in endless high-speed battles, but one pair he has preserved. So far he has worn them just one time – for the film shoots for Steve McQueen’s epic “Le Mans”. And now again today: Once more he is driving an original section of the Targa Florio, once the wildest and most dangerous road race in the world. In an old, distinguished car – the Porsche 718 RS 60 Spyder. For special occasions some people like to slip on a suit and tie – Linge prefers his new old shoes. Four Targa Florio legends back together in Sicily Everyone is feeling a sense of occasion – not just Linge, but also Gijs van Lennep (76), Günther Steckkönig (80) and Vic Elford (81).

www.porscheroadandrace.com Porsche and the Triple Crown of endurance racing Published: 7th December 2018 By: Martin Raffauf Online version: https://www.porscheroadandrace.com/porsche-and-the-triple-crown-of-endurance-racing/ Le Mans 24 Hours, 13-14 June 1970: A jubilant Hans Herrmann and Richard Attwood are given a ride on the back of a truck as they celebrate Porsche’s first victory in the French endurance race There are three Sports Car endurance races that have been run over the past sixty-plus years that have been referred to as the ‘Triple Crown’. Arguably, some can say other races should also be included, but these three have withstood the test of time, and they are the Le Mans 24 Hours, the Sebring 12 Hours, and the Daytona 24 Hours. www.porscheroadandrace.com 12 Hours of Sebring, 26 March 1960: Porsche’s first overall win at Sebring in the USA was achieved by Olivier Gendebien and Hans Herrmann driving a 718 RS 60 Spyder The Le Mans 24 Hours started in 1923, and apart from a brief hiatus for the Second World War, it has been going ever since. The 12 Hours of Sebring was started in 1952 (it ran as a 6-hour race in 1950 and 1951) by Alec Ulmann on a World War II vintage US Air Force base, in Sebring Florida, making use of some disused runways to create a 5.2-mile circuit. Daytona, the youngest of the three races, started out of course as a NASCAR stock car track in 1957. In 1962, the France family added an International sports car race to the schedule, and the 24 hours of Daytona was born, although the first two races were 3-hour races, and then 1964 and 1965 they were 2000 km events.
