Change is in the air. I am referring not only to the turning of the season and the welcoming of cooler temperatures but also to transformations being made at the University of Georgia School of Law. Like any school with a long and distinguished history, Georgia Law has made steady changes and enhancements over its 150 years of existence.

owever, I am particularly pleased to announce that this coming year the school’s primary building, Hirsch Hall – Hwhich was dedicated in 1932 and expanded during the 1960s – will see renovations started. The first phase will primarily affect the ground floor and the Sutherland Courtyard, while the second and third phases will consist of a facelift for the remainder of the building’s public spaces. The key goal of these modifications is to create a more productive learning and scholarly atmosphere for our students by constructing additional places that will facilitate faculty/student interaction, provide more locations for small group study, create additional student organization and faculty/staff office space as well as generally spruce up areas that basically look the same as they did after the 1967 expansion.

We are very excited about these improvements to This coming year the law school’s primary building, Hirsch Hall, will be renovated. Above are renderings of what the Sutherland Courtyard area the school’s physical plant and the enhancements to will look like after the first phase of this project. learning they will afford. I invite you to find out more To view more architectural drawings of the proposed changes, please visit www.law.uga.edu/RenovationBrochure.pdf. about the school’s plans by visiting our website at www.law.uga.edu/RenovationBrochure.pdf.

Similarly, upper-level course offerings have evolved. One recent trend is the provision of more hands-on courses. Georgia Law has expanded its service learning classes significantly in recent years. Since 2002, we have added five programs – the Land Use Clinic, the Mediation Practicum, the Special Education Practicum, the Corporate Counsel Externship and the Appellate Litigation Clinic, our newest initiative in which students aid in the representation of indigent clients in appeals to U.S. Courts of Appeals. The 2009–2010 University of Georgia School of Law Annual Report 45 FIRM & CORPORATE ALUMNI CHALLENGE

The School of Law is pleased to formally establish the Firm and Corporate Alumni Challenge. Firms with 5 or more Georgia Law alumni are eligible to participate in the challenge, which seeks to achieve 100% participation in giving from graduates in the firm. The law school and its development staff support the efforts of volunteers, to secure annual contributions from their colleagues.

The Firm and Corporate Alumni Challenge participants are grouped according to the number of Georgia Law alumni lawyers. The annual competition is for firm-wide participation in making a personal gift to Georgia Law during the university’s fiscal year, July 1 – June 30 and is divided between two groups. Firm and Corporate Alumni Challenge Groups: Category A – Organizations with more than 10 law graduates Category B – Organizations with 5 – 10 law graduates

Challenge participants benefit by enhancing their visibility among our outstanding students, who are among our nation’s best and brightest. Firms and corporations that achieve 100 percent participation will receive special public recognition, including: • Public recognition in the school’s Annual Report and on the school’s web site. • First firm or corporation reaching 100% during the fiscal year will hold and display the school’s Challenge Cup – an engraved silver-plated trophy – until the next fiscal year. • Each year we will engrave the year and winning firm or corporation name on the base of the Challenge Cup.

All Class and Challenge participants benefit from a stronger and more highly ranked School of Law. Private support from alumni and friends is essential to the law school’s ability to attract top teachers and scholars, to offer a rich curriculum, and to both keep talented Georgia- resident students in our state and import talented students from other states and countries. In short, the leadership of our volunteers provides the foundation for Georgia Law’s continued excellence.

Georgia Law alumni from the following firms and corporations are recognized for participating in the Law Firm & Corporation Alumni Challenge during FY 2009 – 2010:
