The basic concept behind the model is one that appears under a variety of guises, depending on the social science literature from which it is taken: regret, dissonance, and coherence to name but a few. I argue that there is an essential theoretical unity to these concepts and that, properly defined and constrained, they can form the basis of a general positive model with implications not only for rational choice theories, but also for issues of personal identity and culture. I also argue that identity and culture are not antithetical to rationality but instead are essential to its having any meaning. The central premise of the model is that individuals act to optimize their preferences and beliefs within a set of phenomenological constraints, analogously to the way that they act to optimize actions within a perceived set of structural constraints. Indeed, optimization is seen to occur jointly across preferences, beliefs, and actions, as individuals seek to construct an optimal life plan that constitutes their identities. By providing this model, I hope to address some the major problems that have plagued attempts to extend the boundaries of the rational choice approach: (1) the ability to make determinate predictions and (2) the ability to make the transition from micro to macrolevel explanation. The model is examined in an extended fashion through three empirical studies that address major unresolved issues in the comparative study of long-term development. Chapter 1 The Success and Failure of Rational Choice The rational choice approach, despite widespread criticism, has reached a point of unrivaled prominence among general theoretical approaches for explaining human action. This prominence extends across the entire range of social sciences. In economics, rational choice remains unchallenged as the dominant, if not defining, theoretical paradigm, and is sometimes referred to simply as the “economic approach .”1 In political science, largely under auspices of the public choice school, the rational choice approach has grown to the point where it has more adherents than any other, and its threatened dominance has set off an intense debate that has polarized the discipline.2 In psychology, rational choice can claim close ties to a wide variety of theories located under the broad rubric of expectancy-value analysis.3 Furthermore, the rapidly-growing subfield of decision theory, while often rejecting the economist’s optimizing version of rational choice, uses it as the standard against which to compare its own bounded rational choice models.4 In sociology, rational choice has risen from obscurity to become a major theoretical approach in both Europe and the United States, benefiting from the strong support of some the most prominent names in the discipline.5 While anthropology is less interested than other social science disciplines in grand theories, rational choice has nonetheless been at the center of perhaps the main ongoing theoretical debate in cultural and social anthropology, that over whether interpretation of unfamiliar cultural practices should always proceed on the assumption that participants in such practices are rational.6 Furthermore, it could 1 See, for instance, Becker 1976b; Monroe 1991; Radnitzky and Bernholz 1987; Radnitzky 1992. 2 Numerous books have been written on the topic of rational choice theory and political science, many of which are cited later in this chapter. LENT* Compared to its English annd Chinese language newspapers and periodicals, Nlalaysia's national language press is relatively young. The first recognized newspaper in the Malay (also called Bahasa Malaysia) language appeared in 1876, seven decades after the Go'vern­ ment Gazette was published in English, and 61 years later than the Chinese J!lonthly 1\1agazine. However, once developed, the Malay press became extremely important in the peninsula, especially in its efforts to unify the Malays in a spirit of national consciousness. Between 1876 and 1941, at least 162 Malay language newspapers, magazines and journals were published, plus eight others in English designed by or for Malays and three in Malay and English.I) At least another 27 were published since 1941, bringing the total to 200. 2) Of the 173 pre-World War II periodicals, 104 were established in the Straits Settlements of Singapore and Penang (68 and 36, respectively): this is understandable in that these cities had large concentrations of Malay population. In fact, during the first four decades of Malay journalism, only four of the 26 newspapers or periodicals were published in the peninsular states, all four in Perak. The most prolific period in the century of Malay press is the 35 years between 1906-1941, when 147 periodicals were issued: however, in this instance, 68, or nearly one half, were published in the peninsular states. Very few of the publications lasted long, to the extent that today, in Malaysia, despite the emphasis on Malay as the national language, there are only three Malay dailies.

It is a variation of the Northern Malay dialect of Peninsular Malaysia which emerged over two centuries ago in the George Town area of Penang, also known locally as Tanjong. It is a hybridised form of Malay that grew out of the language contact situation between two cultures, Malay and South Indian Muslims. The intermarriage between the two groups produced an Indo-Malay community known as Jawi Peranakans who are the native speakers of the dialect. Bahasa Tanjong, as with other languages is a product of culture and is inextricably bound to its speech community. Thus, while considered a Northern Malay dialect, its emergence amidst a locale that was considered a colonial cosmopolitan caused it to possess features that are distinct from other Malay dialects. Early descriptions of bahasa Tanjong, such as Hamilton's discussion of "Penang Malay" published almost a century ago, considers the distinguishing characteristics of the dialect as a deviation of the Northern Malay Dialect. This is the point of departure for this article that argues that the features are in fact cultural markers that contribute to the construction of the bahasa Tanjong identity. Its Indian linguistic heritage, particularly Tamil, as well as its inclination to allow influences from other languages, sets it apart from other Northern Malay dialects.

Tinjauan mendapati bahawa kedatangan golongan pendatang dan pedagang dari India dan Arab ke Pulau Pinang telah mewujudkan kelompok Jawi Peranakan menerusi perkahwinan campur antara golongan ini dengan wanita Melayu tempatan. Golongan hibrid ini pada mulanya dikenali sebagai Jawi Pekan tetapi kemudian disebut sebagai Jawi Peranakan. Sekarang, golongan Jawi Peranakan ini lebih cenderung mengamalkan budaya Melayu dan dalam menuju ke arah menjadi Melayu, proses asimilasi dan amalgamasi yang dilalui oleh golongan ini sejak sekian lama, telah menyebabkan sebahagian besar mereka tidak lagi mempertahankan budaya mereka yang ada antaranya dikatakan bertentangan dengan akidah Islam. Pergeseran bukan sahaja berlaku terhadap budaya, malah aspek bahasa juga mempamerkan keadaan yang sama. Makalah ini cuba mendeskripsikan Jawi Peranakan dan meninjau perubahan budaya dan penggunaan bahasa Jawi Peranakan di Pulau Pinang pada masa ini. A survey was conducted through qualitative methods and focused on library research and non-structured interviews between the researcher and the Jawi Peranakan informants. This survey found that the arrival of the immigrants and traders from India and Arab to Penang gave rise to the Jawi Peranakan community through inter-marriage between these groups with local Malay women.

The existence of Indian Muslims’ identity caused a new paradigm shift in Malaysia involving the racial discussion. This paper traces the diffference in Indian Muslims’ identities from Indian and the Hindus. I argued that Indian Muslims share Islam as their religion and faith, while maintaining a Malay way of life and custom in their daily practices. In Malaysia, the Indian Mus- lim community struggled to place their future in terms of social, economic allocation and politi- cal justifijication among the other communities. However, the strength of ethnic politics clearly charted out their involvement in the political base and moved them to fijight for their cause and rights. Hence, today’s Indian Muslim community has caused an Islamic resurgence, which has brought a new Indian dimension as a whole. Kajian mendapati, terdapat dua kelompok utama dalam masyarakat India Muslim di Malaysia, iaitu mereka yang berbahasa Tamil dan berbahasa Malayalam. Mereka yang berbahasa Tamil datang dari wilayah Tamil Nadu, manakala Malayalam datang dari wilayah Kerala. Dari segi tumpuan petempatan, masyarakat Tamil Muslim kebanyakannya berpusat di Kuala Lumpur, manakala masyarakat Malayali atau Malabari Muslim berpusat di Johor. Abstract This paper discusses the identity of the Indian Muslim community in Malaysia based on their spoken languages. The first objective is to identify the languages used by the Indian Muslim community in India and in Malaysia. The second objective is to correlate the types of the language with the history of their coming to Malaya, the focus of the current settlement based on language and language-related problems among them. This research uses qualitative methodology with certain methods such as observation, document analysis and interview.

What this .meant in a post-colonial context is that while they are citizens of a country they share languages of culture, religion and politics with 'ethnic kin' in other countries. Tamils and Tamil-speaking Muslims from India were one such highly mobile group. They could truly be called 'Bay of Bengal transnational communities' dispersed in Myanmar, Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam. The construction of post-colonial national boundaries constricted but did not affect the transnationalism of Tamils across geographies and nation-states. A thriving and successful print culture is a pointer to the manner in which Tamils and Tamil Muslim expressed their transnational (Tamil) identities. Such a print culture this paper suggests is a rich and valuable source of social history. Golongan hybrid ini pada mulanya dikenali sebagai Jawi Pekan tetapi kemudian disebut sebagai Jawi Peranakan. Sekarang, golongan Jawi Peranakan ini lebih cenderung mengamalkan budaya Melayu dan dalam menuju ke arah menjadi Melayu, proses asimilasi dan amalgamasi yang dilalui oleh golongan ini sejak sekian lama, telah menyebabkan sebahagian besar mereka tidak lagi mempertahankan budaya mereka yang ada antaranya dikatakan bertentangan dengan akidah Islam. Walaupun pada masa sekarang, komuniti ini menganggap diri mereka adalah Melayu, tetapi sebahagian besar daripada mereka masih lagi mengekalkan adat dan pantang larang yang diwarisi daripada nenek moyang mereka sejak turun temurun dalam menguruskan hal perkahwinan. Inilah di antara keunikan masyarakat ini berbanding masyarakat Melayu lain di Pulau Pinang.     Governing Shōnan: The Japanese Administration of Wartime Singapore Clay Eaton Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2018 © 2018 Clay Eaton All rights reserved ABSTRACT Governing Shōnan: The Japanese Administration of Wartime Singapore Clay Eaton The Japanese military administration of Southeast Asia during the Second World War was meant to rebuild the prewar colonial system in the region under strong, centralized control. Different Japanese administrators disagreed over tactics, but their shared goal was to transform the inhabitants of the region into productive members of a new imperial formation, the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere. Shōnan, the wartime name for Singapore, was meant to be the center of this Co-Prosperity Sphere in Southeast Asia. It was the strategic fulcrum of the region, one of its most important ports, and a center of culture and learning for the wartime Japanese. Home to thousands of Japanese administrators during the war and a linguistically, ethnically, and religiously diverse local population, Shōnan was a site of active debates over the future of the Sphere. Three assumptions undergirded these discussions: that of Japanese preeminence within the Sphere, the suitability of “rule by minzoku (race)” for Southeast Asians, and the importance of maintaining colonial social hierarchies even as Japanese administrators attempted to put the region on a total war footing. These goals were at odds with each other, and Japanese rule only upended social hierarchies and exacerbated racial tensions. The unintended legacy of the wartime empire lay, not only in the new opportunities that Japanese rule afforded to Southeast Asian revolutionaries, but in the end of the politics of accommodation with imperial power practiced by prewar Asian elites.
